booop··on Ask HN: How do you invest?
I was very interested in trading stocks for a while, and would read up a lot about the markets. I then met a stock broker and he told me that it wouldn't be very different from gambling if I were to invest based on the news without much understanding of how the markets work.

One thing he told me really struck a chord: I spend 8 hours a day at work, and read about the markets in the night or on weekends. But he lives/breathes/eats the stock markets all day and it's been his full time job for the past several years. So my money would be safer if he invested it for me instead of doing myself (unless I had : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect)

So now every month or so he calls me to recommend a stock and explains why I should invest in it. This let's me use my spare time to develop my skills (since I'm somewhat early in my career) and I've gotten good returns on my investments in exchange for a small commission.

booop··on Ask HN: What to do when procrastinating from a complex task?
If you're having trouble staying focused, what helped me tremendously was to start maintaining what I call a 'distraction record' during the important tasks.

Now, it's not based on any scientific paper/literature. It's just a spreadsheet with the following columns:

'Time' , 'Important Task' , 'Distraction' , 'Time Since end of Last Distraction' , 'Distraction Duration'

Each time you stop doing the important task and do something else (like browsing hackernews or checking your IMs) enter a new record with the minimum distraction duration being a minute. After a while you'll really start paying attention to how much time you lose doing unimportant things just to avoid the discomfort of the important task and how it actually drags on the time you spent trying to finish what you started.

booop··on Simpsons in CSS
Beautiful, and the CSS itself is beautifully organized.
booop··on Show HN: how to approach sensitive conversations
Nice. This would be great as a mobile app as well. Also you need to fix your dns configuration, can't access via http://betactful.com
booop··on The Decline of Wikipedia: As More People Rely on It, Fewer People Create It
Is it really that bad? I had contributed to some articles a few years ago and didn't encounter a 'crushing bureaucracy', but a very welcoming community.
booop··on Startup School 2013 – Live Stream
I can't imagine what it would have felt like for those guys. I'm wondering, was it an interview for the following two as well but they didn't get selected?
booop··on Reverse Engineering a D-Link Backdoor
I would guess for both good and evil.

The good reason being able to login to the router to reset the password if the customer forgot it (I remember some home/small office routers don't reset the admin password when you use the reset button).

The evil reason being able to login remotely to any router and snoop around.

booop··on Tips for Overcoming Shyness at Conferences
I do this too, but then my confidence takes a dive shortly after that point, and recovers only when I'm making the closing statements.
booop··on A Surge in Growth for a New Kind of Online Course
I just hope they make the courses fully functional on mobile/tablet devices. The 3 I've tried (coursera, udacity and edx) seem to be completely ignoring this area. Maybe it would help improve the completion rates too.
booop··on Go Pro on a soaring eagle [video]
Looks like it's time to fire up Unity and make an eagle hunting sim.
booop··on Develop iOS Apps in Java with RoboVM
This is exciting. But wouldn't this result in very large final binary sizes?
booop··on Bullshit Job Title Generator
I think these job titles are more likely to show up in a HN job post.
booop··on Our approach to gender diversity
Indeed. I can't find anything really interesting about this conference other than a ton of self published links to social media sites (an obvious SEO/media campaign?).
booop··on Audio pioneer Ray Dolby passes away
DTS comes to mind:

booop··on Google Might Have Walked Into A Nestle Boycott Problem With Android KitKat
Going by that page, AndrewDucker's usage of the singular their is incorrect.
booop··on Google Might Have Walked Into A Nestle Boycott Problem With Android KitKat
Just wondering, why do you use 'their' when it's quite obvious that it's a man?
booop··on ‘Fuck’ in Linux Kernel
If i may butt in: Yes. Many times with clients too. Just this week I was in a meeting with project managers and consultants from GE, Honeywell, Prysmian and Schneider electric and it was as if everyone was trying to one up each other on the 'fuck' count.
booop··on Scaling Reddit from 1 Million to 1 Billion – Pitfalls and Lessons [video]
Why? Looks like a legitimate question to me.
booop··on Sheryl Sandberg earns $100M, but won't pay interns
She should capitalize on the media attention by turning it into one of the highest paid internships.
booop··on Ask HN: Any laptop support 32gb of RAM?
MSI GT60 for 15.4"

ASUS G750, MSI GT70 for 17"

booop··on I'm learning to code by building 180 websites in 180 days. Today is day 115
In a similar vein, here's a thread of a complete rookie starting from scratch who turned into a fantastic artist by drawing a sketch every day : http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870

I guess this works for learning programming too.

booop··on Ask HN: Developer laptop under $1500?
What's the battery life like for these?
booop··on Life in the Boy's Dorm: My Career at Sun Microsystems
> When I went on my first interview at Sun, I thought it made office furniture. The ad had said it was a maker of "workstations", so I thought it was like Hay cubicles. I did not know a thing about high-tech or computers. I lucked into one of the all-time best gigs.

I had a good chuckle at that. Reminded me of this interview from "The IT Crowd" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuPolrd9yuo

booop··on Jimmy Wales: This is super cool. "I started to learn python..."
I don't share his enthusiasm about this. Doesn't everyone interested in computers/computing start programming things that are actually useful at roughly that age?

Also, is an early start a guarantee that someone will choose a career in computing?

booop··on Go 1.1 performance improvements, part 2
Give it some time. It took a long time for Java and the JVM to be considered 'fast'.
booop··on We should all be eating insects
Upto the mid-19th century eating lobster was a mark of poverty : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobster#History . So it definately is possible.
booop··on How Did Einstein Think?
I read your comment before clicking on the link and now it's impossible to read.
booop··on Introducing Android Studio
Okay, I've been using it since yesterday and I think it's _amazing_.
booop··on Introducing Android Studio
While I'm quite excited about this, I'm surprised by all the hatred for eclipse in this thread.

I develop in Java for both fun and profit using eclipse and it's been running solid ever since I followed the tips given in this SO thread (esp putting the jvm in a ramdisk) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/316265/tricks-to-speed-up.... Perhaps those whose sole complaint with eclipse is its performance should try some of those suggestions.

booop··on Poll: Male or female or other
Wow, 700 votes in just 40 minutes. Looks like this is HN's favorite topic.
