boondaburrah··on Fedora 26 released
I really want to know about how this is solved in Wayland. I've still seen nothing that beats X11 forwarding with compression (nomachine nx), but not only are nomachine not supporting it anymore, nobody seems interested in taking up the torch.
boondaburrah··on 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse
I had a laptop celeron 600mhz running xfce and abiword (I think it was xubuntu 14.04 or something) with no networking (only a dialup modem was available). It was a great, responsive typewriter with formatting and backspace!

I don't know, I recognised the sarcasm right away, since the comment used quotes to distance the speaker from what was said.

If we're all formal all the time, it's going to be hard to welcome new people. It's important to make sarcasm obvious though (because it's difficult to express), so that newcomers who may not know that this is ridiculous can feel "in" on the joke, while learning something, and not being embarrassed.

boondaburrah··on An old idea to make cities more pedestrian-friendly: pedestrian scrambles
I actually hate scrambles unless crosswalks > 4. In a "standard" 4-way intersection, scramble signals make everyone wait much longer to get where they're going. I say this as a pedestrian most of the time, where I'm frustrated I can't go when the traffic in the same direction as me is going. It's also frustrating when the scramble goes off and you're in a car, and nobody is trying to cross.

However, in a 5+ way intersection, they seem to work great.

I also hate when people argue things are "safer" because they stop people from going at the same time that could collide. Congratulations, you've now made people stop and wait, get frustrated, and jaywalk. Trust that people actually don't want to hit each other, and you'll find they won't.

boondaburrah··on As the U.S. fantasizes, the world builds high speed rail
For those of us that have to deal with urban centres, a car is often extremely inconvenient. Add a half hour to your trip time just to park it. You have to go back and get it when it's time to leave instead of just hopping on the nearest train station, etc. That and cost of ownership. I'd rather spend the couple of bucks/quid/x00jpy to have someone take care of that for me and get off when I need to. Plus I'm less bored on the train because I can engage my mind with reading/work/games instead of yelling at all the drivers that are clearly not as good as me.
boondaburrah··on Incomprehensible job titles are an elitist affectation
In some cases, that may be your legal job title. If the 4 person company has incorporated as something like a C-corp, you have job titles to pick from the articles of incorporation form. Of course you can make up your own titles, but the department of commerce (depending on state) is gonna want to know who your C*Os are.
boondaburrah··on D Language accepted for inclusion in GCC
I think they meant lower case "open source" (as in the source is open (anyone can read/compile it)). There are plenty of software that are open source but not freely distributable, such as Unreal Engine.
boondaburrah··on Debian 9 Stretch released
Actually a 400 MHz one. Through the help of eBay I upgraded it to 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD. It's currently built into a desktop arcade machine running MAME.

I have an awful habit of re-using old tech instead of throwing it out. Hopefully I can eventually get rid of the stuff that still works at the MIT FLEA or something.

not even. If you have a netbook from 2009 the ubiquitous Intel Atom N270 that powered all of those was a single-core 32-bit CPU.

boondaburrah··on The Wonderful WiFi232: BBSing Has Never Been Easier
Keep in mind, if you plan on doing this to dial into other modems, many phone contracts explicitly prohibit using a phone call for anything other than voice.

That doesn't mean I'm not gonna try hooking up my old hayes compatible, but I'm on prepaid so I don't have to care.

boondaburrah··on The 640 K Barrier
Ha! I'm running gentoo.

(but only because systemd prevents me from configuring X11 by hand (to support nvidia optimus (damn you optimus!)))

boondaburrah··on The Intel Edison: Linux Maker Machine in a Matchbox
The only reason I would go x86 for a project is if the thing runs DOS.

That being said, has anyone managed to get FreeDOS on the edison?

boondaburrah··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
The only option mere mortals can get their hands on is Win 10 EDU, which has to be downloaded through schools IIRC. (enterprise isn't an option for us individual types) EDU can be managed with Group Policy, like Enterprise. Apparently Group Policy is the only way to configure it to stop snooping.
boondaburrah··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
Perhaps that's why I use Linux or OSX for any serious work. Windows really fucked up the sound subsystem. I can't get anything outside of "7.1 output, maybe 1 or 2 channels in" to work without horrible hops and skips. Like Microsoft never thought I'd be trying to record 24 channels at once.
boondaburrah··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
I have to replace perfectly good hardware more often under windows than linux, with osx being the worst offender (though to be fair, hackintosh isn't what they had in mind).

With windows's new mandatory driver signing, some of my hardware will never work with newer windows. I have to either dig up a copy of 7 or XP, or throw it out. Even on 7 it's a pain. The same hardware works fine under linux.

Also, your "manually editing obscure config files" is my registry hell. I'm pretty sure every operating system sucks (I'd say OSX's equivalent is defaults.write)

boondaburrah··on Windows 10 is bringing ads to File Explorer – how to turn them off
See, this is exactly the problem I have with Windows. It's full of obscure exes and undiscoverable settings (wtf is the registry? fuck). It's like I'd have to have years of experience (since 98 or something) to understand fully. Also it has compatibility issues out the butt with hardware that 'justworks' on linux.

With windows 10, this has gotten /way/ worse. Sure bluetooth works out of the box, but sometimes it just disapperates. I'm doing like, rain dances and getting tons of wrong answers out of google, only to find out that somehow Windows decided to turn the radio off, and there's actually no way to re-enable it except booting into linux because when the radio's off, windows says the hardware is physically /not there/.

I install it for a while, play some steam games, then usually just boot it out and go back to linux.

It's generally hard to switch operating systems, not just one way.

boondaburrah··on The Cult of DD
I mean, are they bad instructions? They work for most people, and they're what most people are familliar with. If I ask a random *ix user what's wrong with my shell command, they're more likely to know about dd.
boondaburrah··on Programs that have saved me 100+ hours
For OSX I wound up doing the completely built-in route. > Create Automator Workflow Service > Assign Hotkey to service > service has one item: Run applescript.

I miss the days when applications came with proper applescript dictionaries. Nowadays I have to pull shit like

  tell application "System Events"
      tell process "Firefox"
get menu item "Quit" of menu "File" of menu bar 1
          click
      end tell
  end tell
boondaburrah··on Netlify CMS – An open-source CMS for Git workflows
I was literally gearing up to build something almost exactly like this this week as my own hackathon project. I needed a blog and I don't wanna do static site generation on command line. I may still do it, but dang, way to take the wind out of my sails. :P
boondaburrah··on Great Progress with DX11 Games Support with WINE 2.3
I was playing portal before it was available for linux (it was 2008 and I don't think there was even a mac client for steam yet). It ran faster on mac under wine than it did on windows, but I did notice wine was downgrading the graphics a bit (probably to DX8).

It's possible they were playing L4D under wine before the "native" linux client was released.

(the native client still uses a DX -> GL translator for shaders IIRC. Valve open-sourced it.)

boondaburrah··on Study: Potatoes can grow on Mars
Yeah, but inches are a unit of length and pint is a unit of volume. Therefore a pint is more relevant here. Yeah technically a cubic inch/foot is volume, but it's not the purpose-built one.

To be honest, the volume system in US customary is the only one that makes sense. Everything's power-of-two friendly. If we could revise the others to mesh with that idea then we could have one power-of-10 system (metric) and then a power-of-two system.

boondaburrah··on Nintendo Switch Teardown
Hell I don't even count the GBA Micro, considering it couldn't run GB games despite having a Z80, simply because they dropped 5-volt support. That's not a refresh, that's just taking a dremel to the thing!
boondaburrah··on Nintendo Switch review: pure potential
Nintendo has a history of only supporting games on their consoles. They still don't view themselves as your home theatre center-for-everything like xbone does, and that's a relief for me. They only thing they need to be "complete" in this day and age is to have good online multiplayer.

That being said I'm looking at the switch as a vita replacement, not a home console.

boondaburrah··on Nintendo Switch review: pure potential
Maybe to releasing Steam games, but I still think Android and iOS are terrible gaming platforms. I need Nintendo to stick around though, because everyone else is just making turnkey PCs while Nintendo tries something new every once and a while.
boondaburrah··on Nintendo Switch review: pure potential
Except that iOS and Android are terrible platforms for games. They're all built around the idea of varying resources, having to kill apps when ram is scarce, a call can interrupt any time, and no guaranteed input other than a touchscreen.

For a number of games that simply won't do. Sure you can write games to be underpowered graphically and still be fun, but there's no guarantee someone isn't trying to run your game on a $50 smartphone so you really have to shoot low to get that to work. Also you're competing against a lot of 99¢ or free games in the appstore/market. Sure they're really bad games, but side by side (in the store) the consumer isn't going to know the difference and will choose on price.

I don't want to live in a world with only free-to-play match-three "action-puzzle" games.

Also touchscreen as controls is terrible for any real-time game that doesn't have a one-to-one mapping from what you touch to what happens. (aka, most of them, besides turn-based) I have to be conscious of not only what I want to do, but where the controls are to do it, since I can't feel them.

Nintendo can't build an iOS device for obvious reasons. By the time they strip down android and customise it enough for it to be suitable for gaming it would be easier to make NintendoOS anyway.

boondaburrah··on Signal can now be used without Google Play Services
I've been running WhatsApp without google play for quite some time now, and I haven't noticed any battery drain. The only downside is when Android occasionally will kill WhatsApp to save on RAM or something, and I don't get any new messages until I open the app.

Though to be fair, every android phone I've used seems to have a problem with occasionally "forgetting" to get messages until I check for some reason or another.
