boomchinolo78··on The EdTech Revolution Has Failed
This is terribly sad! Almost satire
boomchinolo78··on The EdTech Revolution Has Failed
I mean there are alternative models. Lee Kuan Yew from Singapore famously opposed the "helping the bottom kids at expense of the top ones". Is it really the right thing?
boomchinolo78··on The EdTech Revolution Has Failed
>straight up threats because kids would learn things "they shouldn't be"

What do you think is behind the threats? Do the teachers fear being replaced or is it coming from a different set of people?

boomchinolo78··on Hacking 700M Electronic Arts Accounts
Until we see something like this,

The company is liable for $10 per hacked user minus 100X the bounty spend for that year.

boomchinolo78··on A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones
Some are good but then think about it this way, most of them look forward to leveraging debt. Which easily puts them in a position, (with for ex. the current high interest rate environment), in which they are trapped.

And ^ above we're just talking about the ones that seek long-term investment. The ones that look for a quick flip in 6-10 years? Hard to trust them

boomchinolo78··on The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024
The direction of genetic information flow. And yes, multiple cases of the Dogma not working that way. That's why it is, literally, "dogma"
boomchinolo78··on The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024
Some people took it to heart
boomchinolo78··on The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024
The direction of information flow
boomchinolo78··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
It's a good rebranding. It was getting ridiculous 3.5, 4, 4.5,
boomchinolo78··on FDA denies petition against use of phthalates in food packaging
The FDA only cares about outright, immediately dangerous things. See how long they delayed with asbestos and thalidomide. Over long time frames, you are on your own
boomchinolo78··on Reasons to fight cashless contagion
Card is a permanent %2+ tax, how does it compare?
boomchinolo78··on Reasons to fight cashless contagion
In the US cash is more convenient for paying dinner. Instead of the awkward dance of check -> put card -> bring back -> tip. You just pay it with tip, can easily round up or down a bit...
boomchinolo78··on New calcium material functions as an ammonia synthesis catalyst
Current thought in political circles is the problem is the fertilizer, nitrogen must be reduced.
boomchinolo78··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Thank you! At this point we reapplied but left thinking, what if we had filed a motion? The main thing was they did not know how quick it would have reopened and I risked running out of authorization in the meantime.

They did not strike me as particularly knowledgeable as to getting a Congressional office involved even though I brought it up. Just big-tech provided lawyers, not sure how effective they are when the process deviates from usual

boomchinolo78··on ‘A very disturbing picture’: another retraction for controversial physicist
Feyerabend, for one, but that's getting quite above you...
boomchinolo78··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
Yeah, the way it's done in my country is the founder and his existing investors pool into a holding for the 51% which the founder controls. Then, they cannot sell around his back
boomchinolo78··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
Sane people would say "I don't know you" and hang up.
boomchinolo78··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
The CEO did not have 51%.
boomchinolo78··on An update on the Federal Reserve’s Instant Payments Service
I've seen small towns adopt cash only payments to curtail this. Why should the tax pay effectively a 2%+ tax on the economic activity of the town. Imagine a bunch of people living there, transacting with each other, 2% tax for every movement?
boomchinolo78··on An update on the Federal Reserve’s Instant Payments Service
Time to go bigger on metals and crypto
boomchinolo78··on Ask HN: Problems for the next decade?
This is analyzed in that classic economics text The Wealth of Nations, neither capitalists nor urban workers win this one.
boomchinolo78··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
There are three components that get paid in business. Labor, capital and rent.

Rent is low in construction as it is not tied to a particular location; you store the machines and tools anywhere.

Increasing the supply of labor will just ensure that the providers of capital get to keep more of the profit.

boomchinolo78··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
Mexican construction workers, make usually the minimum wage. About 10 USD per day
boomchinolo78··on Debunking the Myth of the National Dish
The form of iron "supplementation" universally added to flour in the US is little more than that. There's some theories that this impacts gut bacteria, particularly the ones associated with B-vitamin.

Iron shavings -> bad bacteria -> poor Vitamin B status -> intestinal lining damage -> celiac, allergies and autoimmune

TLDR; bread in the US makes people sick, not in Europe

boomchinolo78··on Debunking the Myth of the National Dish
Also, AFAIK they don't add iron shavings to it
boomchinolo78··on I moved from the US to Sweden after struggling with burnout
I've researched this issue, the Scandys doth protest too much.
boomchinolo78··on Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought
Yeah, it's like a religion at this point. There are many meaningful debates to be had but people just react very emotionally and dogmatically.

What is the degree of human causation? How much can be imputed to solar cycles at any given moment of time? What % of CO2 is produced by humanity? Is there a possibility of actual catastrophe? Should pollution reduction and cleanup be prioritized over carbon capture/reduction?

boomchinolo78··on Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought
Denier is such a loaded word, call them skeptic. In this case at least, seems their skepticism was warranted.
boomchinolo78··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
I had a BMW with encrypted CAN or very similar to what that would be. Would refuse to use a new module unless you had the dealership key. Which my mechanic managed to get from his friend at the dealership but still...

Needless to say, never again

boomchinolo78··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline, study finds
It was never done for climate reasons. Purely economic and geopolitic
