bongoman37··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
People forget about how hard it is to get through ethics reviews for animal testing. I remember a PI telling me that it was easier to run psych experiments on undergrads compared to rats or mice.
bongoman37··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
Depends on where you are and how connected you are. In my locality (Bangalore) a bunch of people who tested positive got admitted to hospitals on 'precaution' even though they were all mild and advised to isolate at home.
bongoman37··on Leaving Quora after 10 years of answering questions
Yes, this made me delete my Quora account. The emails are vaguely spammy and despite trying to reduce the frequency, every so often they started a new category of email that you had to independently cancel or block.
bongoman37··on The Push for Equity in Education Hurts Vulnerable Children the Most
Given the changes in methods of education, it seems schools are likely not the best places for children on the upper end. It was always a slog to get through the day, and you got bullied and beaten up with the express approval of teachers and administration just because you stood out. There is really very little that schools provide besides day care and taking kids off the parents hands for the day.

Also, most of these methods are basically discriminating against academically oriented students. If they were not, you'd see similar proposals to have equal representation of, say, Asians in football teams or athletics teams and so on.

bongoman37··on A Gov.uk site dedicated to porn?
It seems to have been taken offline now. Here's the archive[1] link for uh.. research. Obviously, NSFW.

bongoman37··on We’re Asking the Impossible of Vaccines
Who is 'we'? Large parts of the world are fine with partially effective vaccines. India does mandatory BCG vaccination for tuberculosis despite a fairly low efficacy. The goals with vaccination cannot be 100% effectiveness because viruses and bacteria mutate, and well, people themselves change. What may be effective in children may not be that effective in oldies. The immunity usually wanes with time at different rates in different people. The aim of vaccination is often to bring r_0 under 1. Thus, any outbreak will die down rather than spread. Vaccines themselves, can and do have terrible side effects at a low rate. It is about balancing all these objectives.

Somehow COViD has changed a lot of people's ideas on what vaccines can do. Mandatory vaccination for a range of conditions has always been there for traveling to many parts of the world with endemic diseases. COViD is just another addition to the list, not the first disease against which vaccination is required.

bongoman37··on Explanations for the Havana Syndrome
Not a spook, but often known devices are not removed because they are a great way to pass on false information. If you know they are listening and they don't know you know they are listening, you could have fake meetings with fake information for them to waste their resources on.
bongoman37··on Facebook is bad at moderating in English. In Arabic, it’s a disaster
This is true for all other languages. Hindi language content on Facebook is pretty much unmoderated with all that you can expect from it.
bongoman37··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
Yea, I found this odd that kids in US used diapers well above 2 years. I found a lot of kids potty trained in India around one. My kid's day care prohibited diapers for kids above 18 months!
bongoman37··on Uber and Lyft don't save money, time, or the planet
In India, Uber (and Ola, Lyft isn't available here) certainly save money and time. I know lots of young people who haven't gotten cars because Uber/Ola is the default. I have a car but often used to take one of those when going to places where parking could be an issue. They eliminate haggling with cabbies, cabbies taking roundabout routes and are far safer for women compared to traditional rickshaws or cabs.
bongoman37··on Vienna museums open adult-only OnlyFans account to display nudes
Hands and fingers always trip up NSFW detection models. We use them for automoderation and a lot of people demoing nail art, close up shots of someone painting etc get classified as NSFW. My guess is that fingers kind of look similar to legs to a CNN model and it appears like naked legs.
bongoman37··on The great executive-employee disconnect
Personally, I am more on the introverted side but I would still like to return to office at least some of the time. It is far easier to zone out at the office. At the house, the 4-year old can be hard to tune out. Right now, a couple of friends of my wife are around and they are talking loudly and I can't tune it out and it would be rude to ask them to tone it down. It is far easier to be rude to co-workers than to your family.
bongoman37··on And you will know us by the company we keep
It isn't just FOMO, its that when you unfollow someone it is seen by the other person has a rejection and people are loathe to reject others. Especially if the other person is important to you in any way, that is a problem. Muting is better, because it doesn't let the other person know you aren't following them.
bongoman37··on The City of London Is Hiding the World’s Stolen Money
It isn't just the city of London. It is all the squeaky clean modern financial centers like Switzerland, Singapore, etc that help cleanse black money flowing in from countries like China, India, etc. Countries like Cayman Islands, etc. come into attention, but the heavy lifting of enabling corruption is done by many countries high on the transparency index. It is just that the people affected are mostly in third world countries so no one cares.
bongoman37··on Facebook bans, sends C&D letter to developer of Unfollow Everything extension
Another store could presumably offer an ice box giveaway.
bongoman37··on When users never use the features they asked for
One of my engineering bosses once said that the scariest thing in the office is to pass by a sales guy on a phone call who is vigorously nodding his head.
bongoman37··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
There are massive bot farms that watch videos, click on ads, sometimes even do a download of the app after clicking and open the app. I've sometimes thought Google could cut out the middleman and just allow creators to outright buy 'views' on YouTube. You could pay like $100 to get 10,000 additional views which would translate to some additional ad revenue, which ad companies would know is inflated so they would discount the rates appropriately and no money would need to be sent to bot farms. This would also be far greener and need less servers and bandwidth and would be an overall win-win.
bongoman37··on He escaped the dark web's biggest bust, and now he's back
This seems pretty obviously something to encourage naive users to find and test and get caught.
bongoman37··on The First Rule of Machine Learning: Start Without Machine Learning
A second point on that is, start with the simplest and most trivial models first, then add complexity as needed.
bongoman37··on Facebook’s Push to Defend Its Image
They pay extremely well. I have a friend who moved to Facebook and complained all the time the first couple of months, but the third month or so he was like even with London living expenses the money is really great.
bongoman37··on [dead]
Its kind of stupid to expect toddlers to adhere to these kind of policies. I've had my 4 year old return home in someone else's mask because he swapped his with his friend's. For people with an opportunity to enforce this it is an opportunity to exert power over someone who cannot argue back.
bongoman37··on Home Price to Income Ratio
This is immaterial. People can be very welcoming to tourists and hostile to the very same people as immigrants. As a brown person who drove extensively through the US both North and South you would mostly see very welcoming people, the same places you would hear horror stories from people like me who actually lived there.
bongoman37··on Big Tech is replacing human artists with AI?
I am not sure what's 'Big Tech' but yea, artists are getting replaced. It is now easy for small companies to use deepfake to create interesting marketing ads. A company I know used their own employee to create some ads and then used deepfake to replace her face with Mona Lisa's. They are considering it for replacing faces with those of different ethnicities for different countries. There are models that will create a realistic voice just given a script. And of course models like GPT-3 can create a reasonable script. Nothing Oscar winning or close but enough for a lot of companies to drastically reduce their marketing related budgets.
bongoman37··on The first baby in history to be conceived with polygenic testing
This is a great idea. I understand that the models are incomplete and there may be things we don't understand yet but every time one selects a particular partner for marrying and rejects the others we are engaging in some level of genetic testing. This is only slightly different from that.
bongoman37··on Simone Biles condemns U.S. Olympic Committee, FBI for sex-abuse crisis
I guess the lesson is always have someone with you when you are going under. In India, they actively remove all family members when examining patient even when the patient wants them present. Most places will not even allow the husband to be present by his wife for a delivery. I always found that very disturbing.
bongoman37··on Who Needs Expats? End of the Traveling Circus
While the need for expats will come down, I don't think it is totally eliminated. Partly because when cultures are too different, trust becomes an issue. My wife works overseeing NGOs in places like India and a half-yearly or quarterly visit ensures that funds are being spent on activities they are claimed to be spent on. Just a random visit will ensure that toilets were constructed and they are usable and so on.
bongoman37··on Backpage founders get mistrial because US overplayed child sex trafficking claim
If you go to places like Thailand, you can buy 'bargirl drinks' or similar. These are expensive drinks that entitle you to a bargirl spending some time with you. There's also a 'bargirl fine' if the bargirl decides to go out with you. These are listed items on the menu. If you think this is a thinly veiled front for prostitution you'd be right.
bongoman37··on Facebook under fire over secret teen research
TikTok is not an adversarial platform and there is probably an element of East vs West styles of thinking here. TikTok's engagement is driven up by people taking other's videos and building on top of it. FaceBook's engagement is driven up by people taking another's position and arguing against it. Leads to very different styles of engagement. You can find toxic content on TikTok as well and build on top of it but it is harder and you have to seek it. On Facebook, you could make a slightly partisan post and someone will take an opposite position and then you harden your position to defend against that and others join in until it turns into a pissing match.
bongoman37··on Backpage founders get mistrial because US overplayed child sex trafficking claim
Did they also outlaw taking a woman out on an expensive date?
bongoman37··on Backpage founders get mistrial because US overplayed child sex trafficking claim
Also, once you drive the good people out of business, not only whatever is left over much worse, but it attracts the people who are outright sociopaths and want to push the boundaries just because they like to see people burn. Since the demand doesn't go away, it just goes underground. If tomorrow all legitimate painkillers were outlawed, drug trafficking would become a much worse problem with a lot more deaths.
