bongoman37··on Email from Elon to the Engineering Team
Having worked around some folks similar to Elon, they literally do not think family etc matters and since for them there is a small army taking care of everything like child care and so on, they assume it is similar for other people. This is another reason, young people are preferred in hiring, no other commitments means they do not have to plan around anything like spouse or kids or old parents and so on.
bongoman37··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
I can imagine that the only folks saying yes would be folks on visa and those who cannot be without health insurance or those who like working for abusive folks (there is a not insignificant number who does prefer some level of abuse in their life). For folks on visas things can get sticky rapidly without a job and they may not want to jeopardize anything until they've lined up the next job which takes a bit of time especially around holiday season.
bongoman37··on ‘Date me’ Google Docs and the hyper-optimized quest for love
The propagation of the species is too important to be left to rational choices. This is why places optimized for finding partners tend to have things like alcohol, dark lighting, flashing lights, loud music etc to subdue the neocortex. These kind of attempts to treat dating like hiring are largely doomed to failure, though you might see an occasional couple hitting it off.
bongoman37··on Another scientific body has debunked bitemark analysis
I had a cop friend directly tell me that there is no point to telling an officer not to search your car. If he feels like it, he will call a K9 unit, and the with that he will have probable cause to search the car. I said what if the dog doesn't detect anything. He laughed and said that doesn't happen.
bongoman37··on A Universal Cancer Treatment?
This. A close friend of mine was diagnosed with stage III stomach cancer. He lost massive amounts of weight and I almost thought he was not going to make it. And a year later he is back at work and doing pretty well.
bongoman37··on Google is shutting down Stadia
I think ads are the equivalent of resource curse [1] for Google. It is so successful that it is kind of like oil gushing from the ground funding all sorts of inefficiencies that otherwise would be unsustainable.

bongoman37··on Apple Procurement VP Departs Company After Vulgar TikTok Comment
Just some regular banter got him fired. You could clearly see he was goofing off. I hope he gets a huge payday out of it.
bongoman37··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
Wow... how would you even know this? Whose wrath did I incur?
bongoman37··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
Some girl was killed because she lacked enough haircover. Just reading this makes it seem so utterly insane. A living, breathing, person was killed for a piece of cloth. Shame on anyone who defends it in any way, and shame on a culture that thinks it is okay.
bongoman37··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Not just defund public schools, but legalize things like child porn and underage sex [1]. Purely local government is often shitty in the absence of any guardrail laws from a higher level. Small towns are filled with people who care for absolutely no one beyond their tiny group and can often have way more time on their hands than reasonable people who have work and family responsibilities and care about people around them.

bongoman37··on “I Was Tortured in the Pasadena Jailhouse” by Bobby Fischer (1982)
While a lot of people are looking at the claims in the article with skepticism, the claims are actually pretty run of the mill. US police does do these kind of things and worse fairly routinely, anybody who knows cops will find that they joke about it fairly often and anybody who knows people who have had run-ins with the cop will attest that this is pretty plausible.

A cop friend I had told me with a straight face that there are no innocent men in jails. His reasoning was that there are lots of things that you are guilty of but never charged with like think of all the times you got away with speeding. So even if a particular man is innocent of the crime he is jail for, it doesn't matter because there are things that he should be in jail for but isn't. Ergo, no innocent people in jails.

bongoman37··on A hormone may boost cognition in Down syndrome
If the first test is positive, it is followed with a second, more sensitive test. It is not directly go to abort.
bongoman37··on A hormone may boost cognition in Down syndrome
Those are complete non sequiturs. Being smart doesn't detract from being 'good'. People here aren't anti Apple CSAM reporting. They are against routine privacy invasion for people who have nothing to do with CSAM. I am sure if the scanning had a zero percent false positive rate and there was no privacy invasion lots of people would be for it.
bongoman37··on Why bother with warrants when cops can buy location data for under $10k?
I used to work for a company that did this. The amount of location data out there and how easily it is available is mind boggling. And turning off GPS location on your mobile phone doesn't save you. You can get location data from telecoms directly though it is coarser. If you have a mobile phone on you, you connect to a cell tower, and boom, your location is known to a few hundred feet. This is sometimes preferred because you can fake your GPS data but this comes from the cell towers so no way to fake it. If you repeatedly visit the same places, which most people do, with some ML models so you can localize it further down.

Every app that asks for location data sells it. That includes every single weather app. In some cases, it is a bigger revenue stream than the ads they show.

bongoman37··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
Photography is usually explicitly forbidden in these spaces.
bongoman37··on Stable Diffusion Textual Inversion
This list seems incomplete. I've had the filter triggered on words like 'thong' as in thong slippers as well.
bongoman37··on Why were medieval monks so susceptible to intestinal worms?
Sun dried cow shit is still used as a fuel source in India. You can even buy it on Amazon [1].

bongoman37··on Saudi woman given 34-year prison sentence for using Twitter
Yea, and this is true for even countries which don't look like dictatorships like Thailand. Be careful about setting foot in those places after criticizing (even mildly) people leading them.
bongoman37··on The ejector seats that fire through the floor
What's atomic level shock testing? Sounds like marketingspeak.
bongoman37··on Google CEO tells employees productivity and focus must improve
Its extremely hard to identify bad middle management, as well as do anything about it. Unlike upper management, which is pretty mercenary and out for itself, and can be fired albeit with large golden parachutes, bad middle management is pretty opaque to top management. It is hard, by design, to figure out what outcome is a particular middle manager having on the company bottom or top line. There is vicious politics, and trying to trim it down can actually do more damage, at least in the short term, than leaving it in.
bongoman37··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
I think Facebook user numbers could drop just as fast as they rose. The network effects that drive a social network to add members could operate in reverse as well when higher engagement users drop and the remaining users either leave or become dormant.
bongoman37··on The Global Cost of Corrosion
Environmentalists are often short sighted and more interested in scoring political points than saving the environment. In a large part, they are responsible for global warming by killing off the nuclear sector.
bongoman37··on Blue Zones, where people reach age 100 at 10 times greater rates
As someone raised in India I didn't get the American dislike for organ meats. I love the liver, the tongue, the brain, and pretty much all the parts of the animal in their various forms. Most American meat preparations taste bland and uniform with really minor variations.
bongoman37··on Deepfake Offensive Toolkit (real-time deepfakes for virtual cameras)
By this argument Linus Torvalds would be responsible for everything from child porn to drug marketplaces to nuclear weapons.
bongoman37··on Altruism under stress: cortisol negatively predicts charitable giving
I can empathize with this :), high empathy is almost always a curse and gets taken advantage of. I've also numbed out over the years but its not ideal either. I've been accused of being sociopathic at times simply because empathy is not a knob one can tune and sometimes the only option is off rather than an on, because being empathetic would mean losing boundaries.
bongoman37··on New type of ultraviolet light makes indoor air as safe as outdoors
It is like Hacker News articles. Sometimes an article will have an upvote or two and few comments and sink from news, and then it gets reposted a couple of years later and there's hundreds of votes and tons of discussions.
bongoman37··on The illusion of evidence based medicine
This is happening in Sri Lanka on a smaller scale right now under the guise of organic farming.
bongoman37··on Zero rupee note (2015)
I've heard of this, but I don't think it makes any difference at all. I don't even mind the low level petty corruption, it actually is a way to reduce the influence of other factors like caste, religion, etc when dealing with government officials.
bongoman37··on Heart-disease risk soars after Covid, even with a mild case
Anecdotally, a friend of mine in his early 40s got covid, recovered fully, had a fatal heart attack a month later. Seems we will see an uptick in deaths from this for some time.
bongoman37··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
You might call it regulatory capture of democracy.
