bongobingo1··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Damn, if only some one, some where, at some point, had mentioned that there's no such thing as a secure backdoor to encryption. Oh well, maybe such events are impossible to predict.
bongobingo1··on How is the SSD installed – M4 Mac Mini (2024)
It has a different pinout in my experience. The exact spec changes between models, I think one or two models of macbook have a standard M2, some (most?) have what looks like an M2 but has extra pins when not actually soldered on.

My experience is only around trying to help a friend get the data off a fried board in a macbook, the desktops might be more standard.

Isn't that the predominant trend already? Since like, the 70s.

2021.

People have certainly been asking for it for at least the last decade. Jail breaking doesn't count.

bongobingo1··on Blocking the "Sign in with Google" Prompt (2023)
Curious how that behaves on https://how-i-experience-web-today.com/.

I assume its blocking by origin, not behaviour? Or does that entire website just """break"""?

bongobingo1··on No more blurry fonts in Linux (2023)
The "on" image looks closer to how I see fonts on macOS, so probably optimising that way has a bigger win. I don't use the system often though.

Hm, is there a name for the type of software that Coolify is, where it presents a management plane for other servers, vs Dokku where it runs on the server?

bongobingo1··on Radicle 1.0 – A local-first, P2P alternative to GitHub
As in it would act as a seed to the network and interop their issues/patches into the network too (probably a big ask).

IMO: running a Foregjo instance would also export to the rad network.
bongobingo1··on Radicle 1.0 – A local-first, P2P alternative to GitHub
I had not heard of SSB or git-ssb, but this gives me a lot of pause...

>This seems to work well: the SSB network thrives off of being a group of kind, respectful folks who don't push to each other's master branch. :)

https://github.com/hackergrrl/git-ssb-intro?tab=readme-ov-fi...

Can't imagine that working at any real level of popularity, but maybe that just goes in the "if you have to solve that problem, its a good problem to have" bucket.

bongobingo1··on Radicle 1.0 – A local-first, P2P alternative to GitHub
> For this guide, we recommend installing Radicle under /usr/local. This will require you to have write permissions to /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/man. You can give yourself these permission by changing ownership of these directories to the current user and group:

    $ sudo chown $(whoami): /usr/local/{bin,man,man/man1}
Seems kinda weird to chown all that in the install instructions? Or am I the weird one. Edit: This is from the seed guide, the user guide suggests installing to ~/.radicle.

Also booo for using ~/.radicle instead of ~/.config|local|whatever.

Some quirks and bumps, but the software is good at first impression. I really hope something like this can take off. Needs a good (and somehow trustable/authoritative) searchable index though as that's 90% of what most users want from Github I think.

I do wonder if the protocol could be adopted into something like Forgejo to aid adoption of the P2P idea.

bongobingo1··on Zen, CUDA, and Tensor Cores – Part 1 [video]

bongobingo1··on Server Setup Basics for Self Hosting
I think Podman is still pretty fringe in the grand count. It also may suffer from an aspect of those that know about it and use it are less likely to write a blog post about it.

I use it and prefer it, much so. Mostly because of rootless (I know docker has made attempts to improve this in the last year or so), not futzing with my iptables and a better handling of pushing images between hosts (it's been over a year since I touched any of that infra, I just remember it being more of hassle with docker which took a "our way or no way" approach).

The biggest issue I have with Podman is the pace of its improvement against the rate of Debian releases!

bongobingo1··on Show HN: Ruroco – like port knocking, but better
I was thinking about doing this to multiple different servers and thought they could all share the same vpn network address for simpler configuration but now that I think about it doing that might run into constant server-key-changed warnings from SSH.
bongobingo1··on Show HN: Ruroco – like port knocking, but better
I know its very minor, but are there ergonomic improvements possible to this setup besides shell aliases/functions around pairing `wg-up host && ssh host && wg-down host`?

I agree that ultimately, with wg in the kernel, this is a much simpler setup.

bongobingo1··on Don’t let your domain name become a sitting duck
Do you worry about the registra going down during that time? I guess ICANNs records should include the lease length and as long as you can prove you exist at the correct physical address or whatever you can "reassign" it to a down stream registra?
bongobingo1··on Timeshift: System Restore Tool for Linux
Do you have much of an opinion on why you went with Restic over Borg? The single Go binary is an obvious one, perhaps that alone is enough. I remember some people having un-bound memory usage with Restic but that might have been a very old version.
bongobingo1··on Plausible Community Edition
> Our license doesn’t prevent these corporations from using the Plausible Analytics name and logo either, as these are a part of our self-hosted code

Don't licences normally explicitly bar this? Tough over-sight for Plausible unless there is an actual reason for letting other businesses pretend to be you. Perhaps they figured it would act as a bit of marketing?
