and pacing doesn't necessarily even mean slowing down. It just means they're controlling the iteration speed. They can increase pace or decrease pace.
bonestamp2··on Claude Opus 5.5
One theory about the regulatory capture angle is that it's not just to shutdown competition as usual, but also a way to slow the runaway spending that might eventually have major economic impact.
bonestamp2··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
I prefer 5.6 Luna while a coworker prefers 3.8 Flash. The difference seems to be that they chat with Flash (with code context) while I just ask Luna to directly modify the code. I was already very impressed with 5.6 Luna so I am looking forward to running 6.0 Luna all day tomorrow to see how it compares.
bonestamp2··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
That is fascinating. Out of curiosity, how far apart would the paths have had to remain in order to be ok with just two links? Like, I'm thinking a plane crash between those two links in the 400m zone could destory both links so a third link makes sense, but if it were 800m that would probably be fine? Or what magnitude of disaster are they trying to mitigate and how much separation would that require for just two links?
bonestamp2··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
Like any intelligent source of important information... trust but verify.
bonestamp2··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
> You can also create reasonably diversified data silos within a country.

I generally agree, although if a small country only had half a dozen or so redundant data centers then it would be relatively easy for a powerful adversary to wipe out all of the data centers and potentially have a significant economic impact on that country.

Having a backup data center in an ally country might make sense. Kind of like how I keep an encrypted backup hard drive at my parents house. Whenever I go to visit I pull it out and backup my laptop there too.

bonestamp2··on An update on Wayback Machine access
It wouldn't be behind their back, like I said, "Maybe let website owners decide which scrapers are allowed to use their content, or allow them to get paid for use of it."
bonestamp2··on An update on Wayback Machine access
I was thinking the same thing... paid access for high volume users or scrapers could actually help fund the non-profit. Maybe let website owners decide which scrapers are allowed to use their content, or allow them to get paid for use of it. If news and other sites were getting paid, maybe they could go back to optimizing for good content instead of clicks.

> The keyboard remains unfixed, as is tradition.

Jeez. I wish they could just roll the keyboard back to iOS 7. That's the last version where it was good.

bonestamp2··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
> with several decent TVs in the house I'd watch movies most of the time with one of them

Once these headsets have comparable image quality, I could see them being very engaging for TV series, sports, and movies. I often wear headphones at night when I'm watching content to avoid waking my family. Being able to do that in any room, with an even larger "screen" would be really useful in some cases.

bonestamp2··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
For sure. I think this is more for someone who wants something portable though.
bonestamp2··on iPhone Duo
I fully agree. I'm just saying we already know the crease is slightly visible on day one and that's the best they could get it at this point. I'm sure they wanted to do better than that but the tech just isn't there yet.
bonestamp2··on iPhone Duo
Yep, and at that point it doesn't matter. I mean, I know Apple likes to paint the back of the fence, but the technology isn't quite there for no crease just yet.
bonestamp2··on Whistle Synth Mac App
Very cool idea. It would be nice if you could enable your camera and then control mod/pitch with head up/down left/right motions.
bonestamp2··on Texas Data Center Map: See where data centers are operating or planned
It's easier to get permits in Texas than most other states, which is especially important for the power generation that some of these data centers are building.
bonestamp2··on Why do so many tools have JSON config files?
For our internal tooling we use something similar to a bash profile config file with name/value pairs separated by linebreaks. So, our configs look something like:

env=staging

db=0.0.0.0

#descriptive comment

etc=true

bonestamp2··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
No this one specifically for me, but same idea. I want to use safari, especially for battery life, but there are too many behaviors about Safari that I can't change.

Can you explain what you mean by this phrase?

bonestamp2··on What happens if you put work into the second dimension?
Figma is a good example of this UI paradigm done well, lots of users, and financial success.
bonestamp2··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
> In many industries, if you can't do something safely, you simply can't do it at all.

Absolutely!

Related story... my wife works in a regulated industry and she was running facebook ads for one of their new products. Facebook had just introduced Ai generated ad-copy and the ad agency didn't know that option was turned on by default so they uploaded all of the ad-copy that was approved by legal and then facebook was running all of these alternative ads that were actually illegal because the copy it wrote were all claims they are not allowed to make in that industry. They only caught it because one of the ads was served to my wife and she immediately noticed it was copy that was not approved and something they could not claim.

I always assumed these shady ads were created by shady people, and I think a lot are, but I wonder how many companies are unintentionally running shady ads because facebook generated those ads.

bonestamp2··on Cursor removed cost information from the usage page and CSV export
> Do not underestimate how much popular harnesses are spamming the context window. The context window is very important.

Do we have any insight into whether it is actually spam and not useful info such as project or programming language specific context?

bonestamp2··on Substack writers, you need a website
For sure. I had a huge following on my wordpress blog 15 years ago and email was how everyone got notified of new content. I'm sure there's a way to at least do sms now if people want that level of notification.

Exactly. All my IoT stuff is on it's own wifi network and VLAN because I don't trust the initial or long term security of some of these manufacturers.

At first it looks like a normal torx head, but then you realize it has 5 lobes instead of 6. Apple used these on early iPhone models when you actually could open them with this proprietary screwdriver.

bonestamp2··on Alberta voter list leak is a potential public safety disaster
I think that's a fair take for most people in the leak, but there are people who try to keep their address a secret for their safety (investigative journalists, witnesses of crimes, judges, lawyers, police officers, etc). They often have a PO box for situations when they have to enter an address (online purchases) or they buy everything in their partner's name (including their house). When their names are leaked elsewhere, their home address is not usually in those leaks. This is a unique type of leak that could be very harmful.
bonestamp2··on Mercedes-Benz commits to bringing back physical buttons
> it is outsourced to Harmon/Kardon

Many automakers use them for their headunits (ex. both my Chrysler minivan and my Porshce have HK headunits). The headunit in my porsche is also in some VW models and for the HN crew there are some fun hacks you can do with a usb stick to customize some features, including making carplay fullscreen (tap the porsche app to return to the porsche UI)...

I assume it makes you a loyal customer when upgrading/replacing equipment too... knowing what to expect and that you're going to have all of that support.

So many product companies fail to think about that -- they're all thinking about this quarter and very few take a long term approach and really try to have customers for life. They all say that want that of course, but too few are really committed to it. There are a few brands that I buy that are committed to quality, and they usually cost more (initially, but probably not in the long run). I'm fine paying more know that they really tried to do their best and didn't let nickels and dimes get in the way of an otherwise great concept.
