bombledmonk··on Walmart Plus takes on Amazon Prime
I've used mint.com for over 12 years so I have purchase history going back that far from both WM and Amazon. I consider myself a relatively heavy user of Amazon for small ticket items with a few big ones mixed in (with 65 orders YTD) and I'm in Smalltown America so no Whole Foods grocery delivery.

It's actually an interesting exercise to look at long term spending at stores. In the past 12 years I've spent $37k @ Amazon compared to nearly $50k at WM. Big numbers, but averaged out that's not all that much. Most of my grocery spend in recent years has been at WM due to it being the closest grocery store and is within walking distance of my house.

You get free shipping on $35 on walmart.com without WM+ so this isn't an added perk.
bombledmonk··on Google discontinues the Pixel 4, nine months after release
My 3a XL has fallen many of times without an issue (in a case) usually on laminate flooring or something relatively bouncy, but the other day I dropped mine on carpet no less and the OLED screen under the glass cracked and killed the screen. The glass on top was totally fine, but the screen underneath just had big crack across it and some rainbow colors.

I tried looking for replacement screens and they are out of stock all over the place and relatively expensive starting at $100ish from places I would consider more reputable and maybe 10% less elsewhere. I'm not sure if the lack of screens lends credence to how easily they break, but it certainly can't be used to disprove it.

I can verify this does happen in some call centers.

I had that happen today.
bombledmonk··on Userscripts Are Fun and Are Still Very Much Relevant
I've spent 9 years maintaining a userscript for a website that now has a new beta in React. Boy, is that a pain in the behind comparatively. I'm pretty sure what I'm doing on the old version of the site won't be possible, but that is yet to be determined.

I'm surprised the corporate culture parody song Mission Statement didn't come up. Every person who's ever been in a corporation should watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyV_UG60dD4
bombledmonk··on Amazon Isn’t the Only Shop Online
I just bought something from Best Buy online when Amazon said the same item was in stock, but would not arrive until April 27th. BB said it be here Thursday, though is usually a day early because of proximity to the warehouse.
bombledmonk··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal budget?
https://www.tillerhq.com/ It's basically an addon for google sheets and excel online that imports transactions into some premade templates. It's paid, but directly gives you the power of sheets.

I just used this at LAX, it was slick. Much better than my last trip through.

Add on dark reader and the mobile experience is dramatically better. It's still a little clunky from a UI/UX standpoint, but still superior experience overall.

Oh good, someone posted this! By far the best datasheet ever written.

bombledmonk··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
That's the reason why I switched to Firefox on my android device. You can install ublock (and dark reader) and it really changes the browsing experience on your phone. It's a somewhat worse browser experience, but to not have ads and have every website be in dark mode is quite glorious.
bombledmonk··on Some new cars at risk of theft by exploiting weaknesses in keyless entry systems
And here I am living in smalltown America and I don't lock the doors on my car in my driveway. For much of my life, I didn't even take the keys out of the ignition.
bombledmonk··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
I just switched to the current Android Firefox a few weeks ago and I must say I find it very hard to go back to Chrome. uBlock and Dark Reader make the phone browsing experience a remarkable amount more pleasant.

Chrome's general UI interaction is definitely more polished and snappier all around, but browsing mobile with good ad blocking, and not getting blasted in the face by stark white pages more than covers for Firefox's warts.

bombledmonk··on Samsung Says It’s Shipping 28-Nm Embedded MRAM
Everspin has been one of the major players in MRAM for a while. I wonder if they are using the Samsung process for their products. If I recall correctly I think Everspin was a spinoff of Freescale (formerly Motorola, now NXP). It was probably 7 or 8 years ago when I saw a presentation touting the commercially viable STT technology, and it always seemed to be just another year away.

It seems aerospace and SSD manufacturers(write cache)are pretty popular areas. It provides really fast write speeds combined with power loss tolerance and recovery of write logs and cache that DRAM and Flash alone can't provide. It's also natively Rad Hard and nearly "write unlimited" which makes it good for a lot certain niche applications where the budget can tolerate it because it ain't cheap (2MB is nearly $30 in quantity). bombledmonk··on Sears Kit Homes Changed Housing
The other major difference is that supposedly most pieces were pre-cut and there were step by step instructions for the entire process. The menards kits don't pre-cut the wall studs and trim work although some efficiencies can be found in things like prefab trusses.

Their Education division is low single digit percentage points of TI's business. While it almost certainly has huge margins it's up in the air as to whether it's more bullet point on a slide internally.
