bombcar··on Write Like It's 1866: LLMs Relearn Telegraphese
Perhaps the first use of sus.
bombcar··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
I love when it keeps checking some random DNS address, because who knows, with a TTL of 64000 it may just have changed in the last seven milliseconds!
bombcar··on GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone
This guy just giving away GPT-7’s prompt like that.
bombcar··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
Some of the other western states share it - because the land is so empty - but the midwest and east often have major population centers at or very near to a border.

I seem to remember California was close to or even beating Texas for "percentage of residents who have never left the state."

bombcar··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
California is strange (for various reasons) but one of them is that it has a very large population, and a very long border with other states, and yet very little population near the borders (unless you count Mexico).
bombcar··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
I've had surprisingly good luck the few times I've tried it - but using VPSs that were a bit more spendy and not known to be spamhavens helped, I think.

The cost of something like AWS SES or Postmark is so low as to make it almost not worth it, but it worked; not that I'd trust "real" email to it - but I was surprised that Wordpress setup emails were getting through with little config.

bombcar··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Datacenters don't (usually) smell of liquid cowshit, which is NOT AT ALL what you think it would smell like if you've only ever had the pleasure of cowpies.
bombcar··on What is going on with ceiling fans
12v blows over any form of distance.

Screw-in sockets are more durable and long-lasting than any replacement so-far, most of which have been replaced again (remember those weird fluorescent mini-bulb sockets?).

bombcar··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Now I've ideas of wardriving a minivan with a fan controller connected to a 100 watt foot warmer putting out all possible codes ...
bombcar··on City building games have a Soul Problem pt.2
The vast majority of players who were still playing (and maybe still are!) SimCity 4 were more focused on the city painter aspect.

And part of that is unless the simulation can be super super accurate you’ll eventually find a way to if not, get infinite money at least make money never a problem and then you just left with the city painter

Or it’s basically a completely different type of game like Dwarf Fortress, or Factorio, or whatever that Soviet one is

bombcar··on City building games have a Soul Problem pt.2
Apparently Factorio can actually heavily tax GPUs because everything is 2D and not a single 3D asset it can cache and render from.

But it can take decades for 3D to catch up to 2D - Warcraft 3 looked much worse than StarCraft imo, and it wasn’t until SC2 that it finally looked as good or better.

bombcar··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
If the Pamper's app is anything to go by, the QR codes will fail to be read, and the older "text recognition of the printed code" will keep working.
bombcar··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
If they sell every CPU they can make there’s not much headroom to make more
bombcar··on Apple Pass Designer
The ones I've seen pretty clearly had some of the motion/change defined by the time. We're so fucked.
bombcar··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
There's an off-color joke that could be made here but the real question is the speed of change - we gloss over it but there have been major changes that took centuries, and others that were quite fast, this one seems to be closer to the fast end.
bombcar··on Solving Factorio Quality
Devs: No Fun Allowed!

Michael Hendricks: Next time ...

bombcar··on Flydubai B38M, first officer under investigation for suspected suicide attempt
It’s the emphasis - one is an attack that involves the death of the attacker, the other is someone killing themselves as the main goal.

“Taking everyone with you” is a perverse form of the latter perversion.

bombcar··on Solving Factorio Quality
The dynamic between speed and energy was already interesting and counter-intuitive (often you wanted efficiency even though slower, because it greatly reduced POWER needs which could decrease your base size significantly).
bombcar··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
Golden Goat cannot handle permissions requests when you’re away from your desk - which is easy to trigger with remote control of agents.
bombcar··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
At least it’ll be Webscale.
bombcar··on When did Google get so weird?
It’s an obvious joke and not a terribly bad one, for those ease spelling bee comeback times.
bombcar··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
And all the good locations are already taken.
bombcar··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
Hey, at least the USA has curb cuts
bombcar··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
The key is that land is accidental in a way - people don’t want “land” per se they want to DO something with the land - and if the valuations are high enough you get multiple uses.

The reality is that in the vast majority of places the valuations just aren’t there.

bombcar··on Claude Deleted 48k Files
Claude providing an AI summary of Claudes laughing at Claudes and their users is ... I don't actually know what it is, but it's certainly something.

Remember kids, with 5.5 you need to say make no fucking mistakes.

bombcar··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
"Doing policymaker's work for them" is something like 80% of lobbying.

If you have something you want done in your town, and you come with the work done AND not asking for funding, you're likely to get it.

If you come with the work done and a PLAN for getting the funding, you also have a good chance of success.

bombcar··on Fifteen years later, the Apple Cards origin story
I've always wondered - is there "physical mail via API"?

Something like I send details to an endpoint, pay $1/3/5 or whatever, and a letter is mailed?

bombcar··on Factorio that you can touch
3D almost certainly involves floating point and uncertainty! It must be anathema.
bombcar··on Factorio that you can touch
Reporting the issue with mods to the team will likely get them to fix something - they're that performance oriented.
bombcar··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
Many of those ISOs end up on archive.org if you dig around.

Memories of the ISO mounting program I had; so nice for all the disks to live on the server and just be mounted when needed.
