bombcar··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
The old days the cars would rust and take the frame with it (I've literally had them get so bad they basically folded up) - modern vehicles will stay pretty darn decent until the first time the paint gets broken, then it'll begin - but the unibody usually lasts quite a long time.
bombcar··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing
You have to be so uptight about performance when you're small that people look at you funny, or your shit is going to fall right over under webscale (ai scale?) load.
bombcar··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> They seem incapable of saying anything without five part Roman-numbered novel length blog posts.

Maybe that’s why they’re so pissed, ChatGPT’s useless verbosity is threatening to put them out of a job.

bombcar··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BgpBZB3Apno seems appropriate somehow
bombcar··on Reversing Factorio's RNG
My favorite is the Doom random number generator, which is just a list of “random” numbers that it cycles through and if you know how to use it, you can do things like concentrate BFG attacks.
bombcar··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
It’s a directory. You could add pictures to it, and we did in our image layout (mainly for fun, but they wanted the logo as one).
bombcar··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
Does it also check existing users so you don't match one?
bombcar··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
It might be that the randomization code was bypassed in some cases - like creating an account in safe boot mode or similar.
bombcar··on Jellyfin 12.0
Yeah, home assistant is super powerful once you break out of the mold of "a light is a light, right" and realize that ANYTHING can be represented as state changes, and you can run arbitrary code based on it.

And with lights, locks, and brightness/color being able to be modeled in Hass's interface to HomeKit and Siri, you can basically do ANYTHING that can be turned into on/off, lock/unlock, or a slider.

You could probably build a remote paintball turret with it, camera for viewfinder, sliders for elevation, rotation, and azimuth, lock for arming, switch for fire.

bombcar··on Jellyfin 12.0
Hass can make things appear like light switches, etc, but if you did that (they can run arbitrary code) then the kids will learn that "Hey Siri, turn on Kids Play" will work.

But door locks refuse to unlock from Hey Siri, so you have to unlock and use your phone.

So I made them appear as door locks (my idea, heh, AI didn't come up with that).

bombcar··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
That seems ... unnecessary behavior for even a wiki.
bombcar··on Jellyfin 12.0
Claude and jellyfin and HASS is great. Now my phone has a “door lock” which turns off the kids user’s access, but lets the current playing finish. And another “door lock” unlocks playing for ten minutes.
bombcar··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
It feels like if you count up all the European countries/cities that have converted to Linux you get something like ten times the population by now.

It's almost a standard negotiating tactic when it comes time for license renewal.

bombcar··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
We need a control group where the only difference is the Honda badge.

I know a number of people who’d buy a Honda without a second thought but wouldn’t be caught dead in a Chevy.

bombcar··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
You've not watched the poor guy have to reboot his truck, have you?
bombcar··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
I was wondering that too - it seems you start with a linked list of sorts, and then evenly distribute the links to the dice. But I’ve obviously not thought it out.
bombcar··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
Reword it as “the smallest possible set where X is still true” and you combine both.
bombcar··on .name Termination
Many services today support vanity domains - Google even has special support for it: https://publicsuffix.org/list/public_suffix_list.dat
bombcar··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
From mechanical engineers I’ve met it almost seems a requirement that they have something they tireless advocate for.
bombcar··on Astronomers Detect a 10-Sided Structure in Saturn's Atmosphere
> That aside, 13bn years old is young. literally an instantaneous flash in the context of all time until heat death of the universe.

That alone is sus, because if we have infinity billion trillion years until the end, and we're so close to the beginning as to be a rounding error, it's weird.

bombcar··on .name Termination
You can almost guess someone's age from that alone - they're more rare, but long domain names still appear that encode a city and a state, and you could just "grab" the first part when signing up.
bombcar··on A Beginner's Deep Dive Guide to Entra Passkeys
Passkeys “done right” via Apple Keychain however it does it seems to work well enough for the normies.

Being able to sign in with touchID is amazing

bombcar··on You probably own this 7-Eleven (and that's why it looks so sad)
Bogle (Mr Vanguard himself) saw this coming and warned us, but it was perhaps too late: https://ia601506.us.archive.org/26/items/bogle-managerial-ca...
bombcar··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
Especially since most machines will just WORK with auto-assigned magic weird IPs and you'll actually be able to share files directly via the OS if you do this, no need for Linux netcat tricks at all.

Now I still remember when target disk mode over ethernet was being talked about.

bombcar··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
I still have a null modem adapter somewhere, and a null modem cable (and they were REAL not the "fake" ones).
bombcar··on Breaking Claude Code Opus 5 Auto Mode
That's what I meant - you give it an instruction that seems to work (always ask before deploy) and so you trust it, and then you notice it can easily convince itself to deploy without authorization ("the user asked me to fix this, and they must know it's a deploy ...").

It plays itself.

bombcar··on Breaking Claude Code Opus 5 Auto Mode
Auto mode is for people who just keep hitting "YES" on everything, it's a bit better than that.

But it's real easy to give auto mode instructions (like "always ask before deploy") and then bypass that just normally.

bombcar··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
"Sent from iPhone" originally was (at least arguably) a "forgive mistakes, phone mail blows".
bombcar··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Submitting to iTunes made syncing to the phone much easier, but I've been using claude to rebuild/repair my 20+ year old library, and have learned that iTunes has very weak if any support for "work" - a feature it has to split up classical music the way the CD does (once file per movement). Frustrating that there will likely never be a high-quality syncing player that works well with iPhones.
bombcar··on Show HN: OpenTIE and OpenXWA, Modern Ports of Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance
Same, my first viewing was on a betamax copy my aunt had - coincidentally the same trip I ended up buying a cassette tape that had Weird Al's Yoda on it.
