bolognafairy··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
This is absurd. You quite clearly don’t experience “blue bubble” envy yourself, because you’ve so obviously corrupted the sentiment, and argument.

Nobody is saying “gosh, macOS is so damned unstable, but I’ve gotta use it, because…blue bubbles on my iPhone?

You’ve just read some story about a company you already hate and are parroting it.

bolognafairy··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
This is a ret-con. If you - as a user - were philosophically and inherently against the App Store, then it may seem that way, I guess?

The reality is that there was a long period of time where Apple built up lots of goodwill with a developer ecosystem that exceeded by many orders of magnitude the pre-iPhone OS X indie Mac developer scene.

There were many, many developers that hadn’t even touched a Mac before the iPhone came out, and were happy with Apple, and now are certainly not.

bolognafairy··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
Okay, if you are so confident in your convictions, convince enough Apple shareholders of this.
bolognafairy··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
Bluey is unusually good even for the ABC, but the floor on children’s programming is just so much lower in the US. Sure, America’s obsession with Bluey stems in part from its on-again off-again fetishisation of Australia. But, Christ, I’m Australian and recently spent a few weeks in the US, and, fuck me, American TV just sucks so much.
bolognafairy··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
No. We don’t need to make conversations so boring as to allow you and your robotic ink to completely unambiguously understand them. For every one person that didn’t get this obvious Bluey reference deep in a Bluey thread, I’m sure that 100 more DID get it.

bolognafairy··on Monster Cables picked the wrong guy to threaten (2008)
This isn’t even true with other common ‘digital’ cables.

Not all ‘Ethernet’ cables are the same. Someone will give you 100mbit. Some will give you a gigabit. Some will give you even more. They’ve all got RJ45 on them.

“All HDMI cables are the same” is an almost-baseless corruption of a very valid critique of Monster et al.

bolognafairy··on Monster Cables picked the wrong guy to threaten (2008)
> Once I patiently explained that a cable shouldn't matter for digital as long as the bits got there.

Emphasis mine.

As someone that sold AV equipment, including cables, in the late ‘00s / early ‘10s, nerds that misunderstood the nuances of this were the single worst group of customers to work with.

You could see them coming a mile away. By the time “gold-plated HDMI cables are a scam” gets down to their level of pseudo-intellect, it becomes “all cables with the same physical connectors are the same”. Patently untrue, and 99.9% of the time they won’t have any of it. Some of the most snide, belittling, insulting shit ever sneered at me in a professional context has been from some socks-and-sandals nerd practically accusing me of genocide because I dare suggested that the cheapest HDMI cable on the shelf explicitly doesn’t support whatever insanely expensive TV, blu-ray player, or whatever else, that they’ve purchased.

15+ years later, purchasing the ‘right’ HDMI cable is if anything a more Byzantine process. Made worse by the fact that any conversation on the topic inevitably has at last one person butting in to say “they’re all just cables bro aha”.

Social posturing is important to everyone. You probably just socially posture differently.

As another commenter said: how? show your working?

You are at the very least letting this hypothetical scenario (that another random HN commenter posed) feed into your “damn Apple!” feedback loop.

Blue bubbles says nothing about privacy. It tells users which service is being used. It informs them about what to expect. Chill.

bolognafairy··on New York Times shut down Tor Onion service
I would at the very least be hesitant to provide such a service, and I’ve gotta imagine that I’m far from alone :)

If this were “the solution”, then the many, many smart individuals and teams tasked with solving these problems throughout the software industry would’ve been out of work for some time now.

It’s obviously more complicated than that.

Signed public builds don’t inherently mean jack. It highly depends on the underlying trust model.

The vast majority of dependent project authors: at best, see a “new releaser” warning from their tooling, which is far from unusual for many dependencies. ignores After all, what are they going to do?.

Hacker News, as usual, loves to pretend it has all the answers to life’s problems, and the issue is that nobody has listened to them.

bolognafairy··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
I tell you hwat!
bolognafairy··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
Sorry, but, what the hell? This is Hacker News at its finest: completely talking out of its ass.

This isn’t how bus routes work, and this isn’t how people ride busses, on most if not all of the…many PT systems I’ve used in multiple states / countries.

bolognafairy··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
This is a weird multi-paragraph evangelical lecture seeing as any EV owner that’s driven in a hilly climate will tell you that this isn’t how things work.

Regen isn’t 100% efficient, for starters.

bolognafairy··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
Do you know which conversation you’re replying to?

The original point was: hills do not matter, because what goes up must come down, and regen will get all the energy back.

This is categorically untrue, at the very least because regen doesn’t capture at 100% efficiency. It being “more than ICE” doesn’t mean anything.

bolognafairy··on Toward a Passwordless Future
Okay. Maybe discuss this with whoever develops your password manager. The tone of your reply has me thinking that you’re using an open-source password manager. Maybe they’ll accept a PR from you?

Passkeys are supported by my password manager of choice, in the OSs that I care about.

The comments here are hilarious. So many people getting on their soapbox about someone forgetting to pay a bill. Something that has undoubtedly happened at your organisation, and happens at most, given enough time.

What’s your actual point, dude?

> Plenty of places mask violating peoples' privacy as "analytics data" to drive decisions about how to manipulate those and other people.

Are you talking about a different group of places? Or is this your view of places that collect telemetry?

Do you use Xcode? Are you aware of Apple’s telemetry disclosures? How do you feel that Xcode telemetry has ever or could ever be used to manipulate people? How do you feel peoples privacy has been violated? Do you want to re-state your point in a more concrete way instead of saying something that basically amounts to “I’m upset, so it’s bad!”

I hate rent-a-crowd privacy people.

bolognafairy··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
No. We are talking about legality. Quote the whole bloody thing. If you don’t get to say “I picked out the bit I like” in court, then you don’t get to do it here. If you’re so right, then it’s not worth taking out in the first place.
