bolangi··on Experts troubled by Canada’s euthanasia laws
What do you call assisted suicide that is not assented to by the subject?
bolangi··on Experts troubled by Canada’s euthanasia laws
This is all very disturbing: price people out of care and convince them to consent to die.

I think if someone wants to end their life, they can just stop eating and drinking. If you just stop eating it will take longer, but will still work.

Someone with grave health problems will often have little appetite.

A friend who nearly died with a running car engine in a closed garage says it's an easy way to go.

The main consideration for the person choosing to end their life is that the measure they choose be reliably effective, as an incomplete death (oxymoron?) will likely entail further suffering.

The seminal reference on the topic in the US is Final Exit, by Derek Humphry.

bolangi··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
Cats spend a significant portion of their day grooming themselves, a kind of bathing, that keeps their fur smooth.

A strong reason to bathe is acceptance by others. One of the first things we do for a newborn or someone injured after getting first aid is to clean them up. We want people to respond positively to us, and being clean is a part of that.

I doubt you'll see a dirty newscaster.

ISTR that the Aboriginals in Australia didn't bathe. But what if they encountered a river? Did they wash and then immediately roll in dirt to ward off mosquitos?

bolangi··on WordPerfect for UNIX (1992)
I still have a reference manual for XyWrite on my shelf. Cool people used XyWrite. WP won.
bolangi··on Scratch is a big deal
So, impossible to make a syntax error.
bolangi··on Pigeon Towers: A Low-Tech Alternative to Synthetic Fertilizers (2016)
On our small farm, we use ducks for fertilizing our fruit trees. We put a temporary fence for them around a tree. The ducks are out during the day, at night inside the fence. After a week or so we move the fence to another tree.
bolangi··on Bluetooth relay attacks allow Tesla Model 3 / Y to be unlocked and driven away
Is this not a replay attack?
bolangi··on Decision looms for controversial Poseidon desalination plant
Historically desalinization has been an extremely inefficient way to produce drinking water -- energy intensive while discharing a large fraction of the input water. I doubt the fundamental economics of desalinization have changed.
bolangi··on Git security vulnerability announced
> I feel like this change is a far bigger one than thought, and it's gonna break some workflows

Breaks the CI system for perl, for example.

bolangi··on Light exposure during sleep impairs cardiometabolic function
Hope this discovery will influence hospital lighting policies.
bolangi··on Heterosexual HIV diagnoses overtake those in gay men for first time in a decade
What about HIV incidence in gay women? Doesn't it deserve a mention?
bolangi··on Insects are more sensitive than they seem
Even single-cell organisms have neurotransmitters, the "molecules of emotion"
bolangi··on Managing an external display on Linux shouldn’t be this hard
What's hard is not using an external display but responding to events such as closing lid or plugging in a external monitor.

I find the lack of advertising and nagging more than compensates for manually entering an xrandr command or setting a sleep mode.

bolangi··on Train Wheels Are Cones
Uh, no. Motorcycle racers learned about countersteering in the 70s. Before they had no idea.
bolangi··on The world must cooperate to avoid colliding satellites and space debris
Putting satellites in low orbits will help, since everything in those orbits will eventually decay.
bolangi··on Craig Murray will surrender himself for prison
> Is there some succinct explanation for why Murray's reporting facilitated 'jigsaw identification' while other reports did not?

That is the point: other media reports gave more information about the accusers than Murray's reporting.

bolangi··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
I don't even use google, except I have a youtube login, and many friends I correspond with use gmail. In the present surveillance regime we can experience, through the medium of digital communications, the myth of the Evil Eye and the fear of being watched with bad intention.

bolangi··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
The distinction between government and big business (what an archaic expression!) is artificial, and doesn't exist in practice.
bolangi··on Non Session Manager vs New Session Manager
To be clear, NSM is one project, and doesn't represent all of Linux Audio.
bolangi··on So you want to build a house more efficiently
I know a guy who researched aerated concrete. He used a slimy additive to help hold the bubbles. Basically, the compression strength of concrete is so much higher than necessary that addition of a large portion of air results in a material that is much lighter with more than adequate compression strength. He couldn't find interest among concrete companies in his state.
bolangi··on Oregon has legalized human composting
Her workshop covered both aerobic and anaerobic compost. Anaerobic composting has uses, and one is getting rid of animal carcasses.
bolangi··on Oregon has legalized human composting
According to Dr. Elaine Ingham, "the compost tea lady", a large compost pile designed to be anaerobic can consume cow carcasses. It does take several months.

XyWrite was the bees knees of that era, IMO. But far be it from me to make it a religious debate :-)
bolangi··on Mammalian Hybrids
I've read his two-volume book on mammalian hybrids. He guides the reader through some thousands of reports, and some suprising commonalities can be seen that are hard to discount, even if specific cases may seem unlikely.
bolangi··on “Computer science is not about computers”
Not about computers but the science of what is possible to do using a computer and thus understandably referred to as "computer science". It rolls off the tongue easier than "computing science"

The source in this video, a former FAA inspector, gave figures in years rather than pressurization cycles.
