Wonder who bought it? We can certainly anticipate food prices rising as the core needs in life; air, water, and energy become the next hot commodity as the "nice to haves" supply chain suffers and those with liquid capital seek returns.

As historically established global centralized methods begin to fail with greater and greater impact institutions and individuals with the will and means to decentralize those methods will continue to accelerate. We live in a redefining time and many are greatly motivated to prevent that change while others still are planning to adapt and even fewer have already made such changes. Our modern lives are highly built around energy and if one fails to see the coming decentralizing movement around this and more then opportunities are certain to be missed.

My response to you as a ray of hope is that some do care albeit a very small informed few while even less from those few have made proactive lifestyle adaptations. Should the scientific discoveries and interpretation of the data from extracted ice cores hold true then we know what surface temperatures earth will be experiencing in due time with CO2 at 421. “Time” being the key term as few humans concern themselves with events that transpire beyond the scope of an individual human's time, aka “life”. I can greatly respect your anger as expressed from your choice of vulgar words as I at times use the same words under the same expression of statements but I believe we have all but solidified what is to come since very few people are willing to change how they live. I anticipate more and more increased tragedy at all levels as this modus operandi has already begun. One being the regional heat dome anomalous events which will bring many more deaths from the wet bulb temperature effect since nature does not see race, religion, wealth, politics or any of the other human created points that we argue constantly that mean nothing in the grand scheme of our existence. While entities continue to have meetings to discuss how to fix the problem without wanting to change how we live the earth is certain at some point to force everyone's hand while Darwinism continues to play out, with or without humans.

A native East Coaster here which also owns undeveloped land in Northern California (Modoc). While we here on the East Coast (Mid Atlantic) have been experiencing significantly larger quantities of rainfall per storm in the last 10 years it would seem to be the inverse to the West's issue and not as publicized since we have surplus. As to the land owned in California a month ago I was informed that PG&E would be killing the power to the area anytime the wind is forecast to go above 20 miles per hour and that planning should start immediately for localized continued power delivery whether parties decide to deploy generators or renewables with battery storage. PG&E speculates at this point that the area should anticipate 5 to 15 hours of outages a week and has zero information about when or if this will change. No matter the outcome of this unfolding event, as this document states “signed into law the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act”, I am going to make an educated guess that no government will be solving this issue by printing more water or electricity.

They are called "middlemen", having been one several times, and in the last few years as "fintech" has exploded the industry has become overrun with more and more of such companies that add little value outside of raking in high fees for the owners.

They all work, you just need mass and height given a surplus of renewable power from any source. Last I checked we have junkyards filled with oxidizing metal that could be put to "potential" work as mass, not to mention all the other precious metals which could be reclaimed as people seem to forget we pulled them from the ground to begin with. Height is accomplished using the same materials salvaged from the junkyards to be used as structure in a different remanufactured form. Hopefully gravity doesn't change because then all of this is meaningless anyway. Efficiency doesn't really matter because nothing I am aware of is 100% efficient in energy and if the source is renewable then the loss is always made up in time, something people have no patience for today it seems. The CAPEX cost may be high but with correct design the OPEX cost will be low and functional unit lifetime correlates to the specific lift/generation device and that is where your simplicity reference is key.

It always comes back around to cost but when the power goes out what are people willing to pay? I have contacts that lived through the Winter Texas outage and the stories impact deeply and it of course will not happen again. Oh wait, last week 6 plants totaling 2.6 GW went offline from the spike based on May heat and certainly June, July and August will be cooler. And what about all of those devices that require electricity to keep various mammals alive, humans included?

My experiences reflect that few people on this planet are proactive, I can only hope those with crazy ideas working toward the energy problem find the needed traction in proving solutions that work to our global energy issues. If we do not solve the energy issue in a clean manner we are certain to be unable to solve the carbon issue which will need that very energy to return all the carbon we have already released and more.

I am legitimately curious as to why there is such an adverse acceptance to gravity storage? This is already done in the U.S. West in running large density mass trains up hillsides and Gravitricity over the pond has a functioning model using old mine shafts. As an entrepreneurial tech founder I comprehend oh too well that until someone proves "it works" there will always be nonbelievers even though the math and physics agree. Maybe it is inherent human nature to not believe something until it is seen but in this era we also will have countless which do not believe even when it is proven. The planning is the easy part and the math checks out, mhg=pe, execution is what is difficult and all that matters.

As a co/founder and core architect of multiple PCI level 1 compliant payment processing companies in the last two decades I will add as others have that billing and payments is exactly like anything else which is "difficult". Once you spend enough time in the trenches dealing with the challenging technical issues your experience and creativity leads to the proper solutions that further enhance the system. I sometimes question how such items come to be posted on HN as many of the non-tech posts here I share great interest in and this topic is no exception.

I live next to one of these abandoned railroads, one of the earliest in the country actually, which Daniel Boone wrote about riding along with many U.S. Presidents as well as Kings and Queens of foreign countries. The items I have recovered from surface hunting and metal detecting this area have been eye opening from many aspects. The U.S. National Archives has the blueprints of the design for this railroad I live next to digitized and available online and many years ago I studied it out of curiosity for the value of understanding the history of my area. What I could not have known at that time of studying was that a few weeks later I would discover pieces from the construction that matched the U.S. National Archive designs to a T - I was stunned. I have also since come to learn these pieces are in great demand from avid railroad collectors but I just do it for the lulz and not the money. Through my 10 years of researching and exploring historical information in my area I would share with everyone that if you live near a historical location and have interest in the past do your research first.

I live in North Eastern Maryland USA and two years ago I noticed bark laying symmetrically encircled around a tree. I asked around and an arborist informed me of our unfortunate situation to come which the State of Maryland had been trying to get in front of for years. After my property was visited by an State of Maryland arborist per their request I was informed I had to rectify this issue by felling my trees as soon as possible to prevent more spreading however my efforts were pointless since there are hundreds of infected Ash trees in and around me of which my neighbors have no idea nor any interest in their trees. Now in present time there are many hundreds of dead Ash trees around my area and the recent bomb cyclone wind we had caused those dead Ash trees branches to fall and some were widow makers for sure. I have proactively contacted my Home Owners Association, Town, County and State as it relates to these dead trees as the human threat impact is extremely high since some of these large trees are over property, yes homes, and those residents have zero knowledge about the threat these “fast dying” trees bring to them with each passing day. The invasive species are getting worse year over year as the price of globalization comes into clearer focus as years ago it was the brown marmorated stink bug yet in more recent years it has been the spotted lantern fly and now it is the emerald ash worm.

How is an impacting specific data loss inexplicitly tied to one company's compromise beyond a reasonable doubt when systems everywhere are "leaking"?

Having been involved in several financial compromise events dating back to the very earliest known I find more laws will in no way address the issue. Everyone drives the speed limit or under it too, correct? For those with experience in the financial banking realm the rules often "apply to thee but not to me" and yet companies are still hiding compromise events, even those ‘compliant’. While companies joining the fintech rush are held to standards and requirements that cost significant sums of both time and money all the while the large grandfathered entities and systems are allowed to continue not abiding by the same rules and laws those entities themselves set. Hypocrisy rolls on and exists everywhere and I welcome the changes to level the playing field but more laws are certain to not fix a problem which cannot be seen since the function of vision in our species is the primary driver for nearly all we do. If it cannot be seen then it must not be a 'real' problem so let's schedule more meetings to talk about it.

As the governments around the world continue to have meetings weekly, both publicly and privately, about the ever growing cyber issue I again reiterate that the problem lies at the source(code) and with those who write it. This is truly an issue that can only be solved through education of those writing code and it cannot be solved tomorrow. Let's schedule another meeting to talk about it.

Many years ago it was BBS systems and then as Windows took off it became SMB shares, fun times for sure. It then transitioned to databases open and exposed to the WAN and once those admins became educated the targets were RDP clients that were poorly designed, radmin anyone? Everything to this point led to the Payment Card Industry (P.C.I.) founding as losses accrued and blame assignment for cost absorption was needed. As APIs took off, where we are now, the era of data vacuuming everything insecure continues inclusive of AWS. The future however will redefine what it means to build secure software from day zero as IoT devices that control life and property will continue to grow in popularity as well as attack. Industrial, commercial and residential targets grow by the day such as SCADA, lighting control, hot water tanks, faucets, toilets and all the other devices that will become smart in one's life but I would be remiss to not mention the most important items that will enable remote life manipulation, medical devices. What you cannot see matters most and as connectivity of everything grows exponentially one is likely to not even see it coming. Stay Healthy!

And if complexity can be designed out from day zero with a clear and concise foundational development model to follow then the technical debt can be greatly reduced as well. This of course conflicts with the global rush into tech to build something as fast as possible to get to revenue and not investing the time proactivity to build for the long game. Planning and control are my two points that get extreme focus in designing that foundation as the world comes to learn the importance of these items impacting cybersecurity, fairly important now-a-days it seems, and so much more. If you know something works then no need to reinvent it every time.

My personal stance is "no" as an entrepreneurial doer. While the masses consume the topic du jour served up in an all you can eat fashion by the very systems mentioned from the article there are those that still press on. Even before today's most recent topic du jour there still existed countless issues to which solutions are needed, some being extreme in both time and financing. As the world continues to move forward in time, do note that I did not say progress, over that passage of time will come new ideas and techniques from those who challenge themselves to solve their own problems first. The world is certain to be confronted with more and more challenges set by the diversity and growth of the world's population however even in the midst of the disagreements every single one of the world's inhabitants will still require the same exact resources to survive. Thus significant opportunities are everywhere, one just needs to focus their time.

There is a lot of ignorance around all topics but in technology it seems to be more pronounced if only because I have personal and professional interest. I felt inclined to support 10x0five in his statement as my own experiences are identical as it relates to storing files in a database. There were, and likely still are, those that proclaim over and over to never store serially linked chunked data in a database, aka files, yet after building and proving a model in production long before today's tech that stance has seemed to change. The benefits far outweigh the costs when having everything in a database which is comparable in today's uptake of putting everything under version control. Fear not what others judge about your ideas as this should just be more motivation to "press for real answers" proving yourself correct.

As the other OCD's among us can chime in as well, all those "note app" creators here, you can only improve what you can measure so where do you 'waste' your time? Every single person alive is yielded the same 24 hours in a day but one does not need to look far at all to realize the massive time sucks that steals your time hourly, daily, weekly, yearly. I am married with kids and our residence of almost 20 years has never had a television and never will as television in a mental cancer that does nothing but steal one's time and worse it fills your neurons with irrelevant events that have little to no productive meaning for one's own life. Sure one can feel included and talk about "last night's great play" or "How funny XYZ was - did you watch it?" but I guess I'm just a boring nerd as I never have those discussions given that I chose long ago to not waste my time on others entertainment ideas as I have my own ideas to create. One is either a producer or a consumer so where do you 'waste' your time? Is now the time to get organized?

Full disclosure: I do have hobbies that 'waste' my time however I also greatly benefit from said hobbies which get me out exercising and also enriches my interests; metal detecting and relic hunting. Just as it is exciting to accomplish something new in code, so to is the feeling of picking up a relic that was last handled by a human one thousand of years ago.

Fortuitous timing for this ask and while I will presume you imply 'career change' my response is not to that degree yet here is my 2¢ for those that may find value.

I have undertaken extensive learning in electrical and mechanical engineering in recent months but from an applied perspective as I am dogfooding my own ideas after calculating that my recently installed PV system will be producing far more energy than I have chemical battery storage capacity. While my degree is in software engineering my current personal energy solution design correlates nicely to the global energy storage demand that is rapidly growing. As the sole creator and architect of the technology around my past founded entities, and in conjunction with my diverse exposure to physical and logical build outs; residential, commercial and industrial, I am heavily consuming and learning information as it relates to electrical and mechanical engineering in solving my own energy abundance issue. The technology side of my problem is "easy" having built several enterprise platforms but in learning anything new mistakes will always be made, that's the fun part! The speed at which I am able to learn and apply these concepts never would have been possible without the internet, we live in truly surreal times.

Point being that if one is motivated enough one can do anything you put your mind to no matter what anyone else tells you. I have been mocked and laughed at for my ideas and once you get past what other people think the world is your oyster, maybe it has a pearl in it or maybe not.

I do not claim to be a plane spotter but given where I live I have picked up interest in the last several years after U.S. president 45 was elected and even more now with 46. 46 goes home nearly every weekend and the FAA flight restriction circumference borders right over my house. I also have the locational benefit of being inline with the flight path and approach for Air Force N for 46s comings and goings by plane which I have seen multiple times and I did see 45s helicopter once flying over enroute to NYC.

Others may not be aware that there is the active deployment of fighter jets and air refueling tankers that support this FAA VIP air restriction. Since 46 has been elected and nearly every weekend he is home we experience non stop fighter jet thrust rumble at our location. One will not find these jets on any public data plane location stream yet the persistent presence of the air refueling tankers and the rumble from jets burning fuel on the ready makes it obvious of the jets presence for those in the know. Given the proximity to major airports the air refueling tanker is listed on adsbexchange and fly's in circles sun up to sun down topping off those jets.

A few Sundays back we had pristine clear skys for both PV collection as well as noob plane spotting. Using binoculars on a tripod and sky scanning based on the tankers locations I believe I saw the back side of a F22 coming in to top off. I did get a picture about an hour later of an unknown jet type refueling off the air tanker after months of trying, I just smiled.

As to the point of this "China" ban I personally know the value of such data in my own accomplishments as I see it akin to social engineering. Granted it is not war time so the tanker is broadcasting but I find it an oversight by those in charge to advertise where mother goose is as the goslings are never far behind.

Exciting times in FinTech for sure as this window in time resonates with me just as the build up to the dotcom bubble was a blast too!

This will be significantly interesting to follow from a revenue generation perspective and how they are going to abuse users and then ask for forgiveness. Monthly billing will need a valid payment instrument "on file" and over time they are certain to nickel and dime users for features. So you want to print on your home printer from your M$ cloud hosted Window$ in$tance, that will be 5¢ per page or we can send it to your local Staples* for pickup at 1¢ per page. A microtransaction chargeback for a failed print from a paper jam will be interesting to review. This is certain to go in the direction most know it will and has the potential to redefine the term pay-per-click. Just look past the security implications and the die-sasters that are certain to occur from making Windows available from anywhere "easy" for the non-technical crowd.

As a serial entrePAYneur and the core foundational member of multiple payments companies responsible for all hardware and software architected, assembled and constructed with my very own hands I would sternly disagree with this article. I have done exactly what this article states not to do and have done so multiple times with each better than the last, it only takes an interest and an insatiable desire to learn. The world will come to learn the importance of "owning all the code" and "data control" as the cyber issues continue to cost countless billions and in time more and more bodies. Security will become paramount to everything and outsourcing for "cheap" will have a much greater cost than one realizes in the moment. Those that take greater risks have much greater reward and those risks shape the future for where we are today. My current efforts are the really fun stuff given the world's current temperature on so many fronts.

Always remember that which you read is just someone else's flavor of an experience in which they try to convey their ways on you. I am not bashing what they wrote just recognize how things would be if risks are not taken.
