bogota··on Spanish agency created AI influencer and she's raking in up to $11,000 a month
I don’t think too many will mourn the loss of influencers.
bogota··on Fat OCI images are a cultural problem
I agree with everything in that post the problem i have when i even try to get someone to use alpine which is still a full OS just small is that no one cares. Developers don’t care that they have a 3GB image. They don’t want to learn about any of it. Ever time a developer has an issue with docker it comes right to the infra team like we own the image that they completely wrote and now is broken because they pinned it to latest.

We are in the nodejs world now where speed is all that matters. No one wants to understand what is going on under the hood. And no one takes the time to learn something new when your job only cares about the next feature. At the end of the day all that matters is money.

bogota··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
Not exactly. It is just pricing in the risk of the government making the on/off ramps impossible to access.
bogota··on Pentagon fails audit for sixth year in a row
250k with government perks and retirement is pretty nice. Also for 250k cash you will find lots of people willing to learn cobal.
bogota··on Pentagon fails audit for sixth year in a row
Start paying 250k a year for cobol developers and the problem fixes itself really fast. That or start migrating the system. Or more likely they keep using it until it completely breaks and then run to the government for a big handout to fix it.

Easy to be irresponsible with other peoples money.

bogota··on Omegle 2009-2023
I don’t think im being extreme. That is the way I see it. That is the way the various media outlets portray it. And that is the rhetoric that has taken over politics.

What should I do? I have no one I want to vote for and honestly I don’t care enough to do it myself. At this point it’s just figuring out how you can profit off this and get your own piece of land to check out on.

I don’t find this to be depressing it’s just what I see as facts.

bogota··on Omegle 2009-2023
100% agree i think the bigger issue is at least in the US and many other countries we have lost all faith that the people making those choices will do so in a responsible or ethical manner.

Essentially we lost faith in the system and I don’t think it will ever come back. So where do we go from here?

bogota··on Signal Public Username Testing (Staging Environment)
They setup the account with his email on accident because it’s likely close to a lot of other emails.

Essentially it’s his account although legally I don’t know how that would go if say you emptied someones bank account

bogota··on F*** Paywalls
Not hating on it genuine question since i am familiar with the other product. Just want to know the pitch for why i should try it out
bogota··on Ask HN: Making a better world, how important is that to you?
Im not interested in a better world just that my neighborhood and ideally city continues to get better. Anything outside of that i have so little control over it’s just virtue signaling
bogota··on F*** Paywalls
How is this different from archive.org?
bogota··on YouTube's plan backfires, people are installing better ad blockers
Yeah with you until im blasted with political ads. Ads for medication i don’t need. Ads i have seen 100 times. Back to back un skippable ads.

If people don’t want to watch the ads and “content creators” aren’t supported they will have to do something else.

I put content creators in quotes because 97% of you tube is trash content that they all steal from the few people making original things. Most of them should not make any money.

bogota··on We are investigating reports of degraded performance
I like mine better because i wrote it :)
bogota··on We are investigating reports of degraded performance
Host a backup of your own code? It’s easy and can be done on a rpi. I wrote a go program in 1000 lines that automatically does this for me. And then I actually started using that as the main source and pushing the backup to github.

It also pulls down anything i star into a different folder which get a sync one a day. The rest get a sync every hour.

bogota··on Climb aboard Brazil's hurricane truck of happiness
They have a very similar thing in Colombia except it just the loud truck that drives around playing music. They suck. They drive around starting at 10PM and like to park in front of residential buildings at 3am in the morning waking up literally hundreds of people. The police don’t respond or care so nothing is done about it. Just one of the many things that will stop you from getting a good nights rest in any part of Colombia. Which is likely why it’s almost everyones dream in the country to buy a farm in the middle of nowhere.

Hopefully it’s not the same in brazil.

bogota··on A bank runs serverless with PHP and AWS Lambda
hur dur php bad because they told me
bogota··on Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds
Im jealous of anyone who can sleep well. I have been doing all of the above for years as well as testing out different temperatures and also not looking at screens for well over an hour before going to bed.

I just can’t get good consistent deep sleep. I will say one thing that did help was i use to live in the city and after i moved outside of it and it was much much quieter at night (no trucks driving through or random sounds or honking in the middle of the night) i did notice an improvement.

bogota··on Jury Finds Realtors Conspired, Awards Nearly $1.8B in Damages
Honestly just going to do a FSBO if i ever sell. The fact that I pay out 5% of my house price for what is essentially a few hours of data entry work is beyond stupid.
bogota··on Off-duty pilot allegedly tried to shut off engines on Alaska Airlines flight
No idea what you do about this but it’s one of my biggest fears when flying. Fortunately you have two pilots but I don’t like seeing one step out to use the restroom ever.
bogota··on The Darién Gap
Seems like recently that hasn’t been the case as the economic situation in South America continues to worsen more people are crossing on foot.

Strange to be downvoted for pointing out the stats on the linked wiki article.

bogota··on Uber migrates microservices to multi-cloud platform running Kubernetes and Mesos
This is just such a bad take that it makes everything else you say after it null.

And google is just a search engine they only need like 20 engineers……………

bogota··on We have used too many levels of abstractions
This is a constant source of pain for me since I started working 12 years ago after finishing college. I noticed when most people came to me with issues it was because they were afraid or just too lazy or didn’t know they could just read the source code or docs and go one level under the abstraction to figure something out.

My entire career so far i spent trying to get onto teams where others were doing the same as me but had more experience. In the years i spent on those teams i learned a lot. But as time has gone on a lot if those people have left into management which just isn’t the same as directly working with them on problems. I actually have also done the same recently.

When i look at almost anyone today they have no desire to understand what is going on with the tools they are using. Further more most of upper management pushes me to enable this by building more abstraction on top of abstraction they do not understand so when it breaks I or my team can fix the actual issue. Ensuring the developers have an easy out for anything that is outside knowing their framework and some basic syntax.

I always wonder if people felt the same way about me if they came from a background where they had to know assembly or other lower layers of the stack. At any rate even in the current environment I haven’t been worried about finding new work if needed. Their seems to be a very short supply of people anymore who know how things work under the hood or even have a desire to figure it out when it breaks.

bogota··on Leaving the Phone at Home
I really want to however i am always on-call and the fall through for my team. Although it rarely happens i always have to have a phone with me. It will likely be like that until i retire because of my position.
bogota··on Gulf Stream weakening now 99% certain, and ramifications will be global
Anyone know a good web site or publication that shows potential outcomes from all these different changes to global climate and where will be the best places to live in the future? Should i be looking to buy plots of property it Alaska?
bogota··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
More importantly how was one person able to log in and download all that data without any alarms going off
bogota··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
If they couldn’t detect millions of records stolen from credential stuffing I don’t think that makes them look any better. But Ill die before i see a company take ownership for their actions im sure so it’s no surprise
bogota··on LinkedIn lays off nearly 700 staff, engineers to suffer the most
Jeez, the layoffs will continue until morale improves i guess
bogota··on Tech workers remain some of the highest paid in New Zealand
That is staff band at a company without inflated titles and if we are only talking about the cash part of the offer.
bogota··on The US government is taking a step toward space-based nuclear propulsion
Don’t confuse what you read online or in the news with what is actually happening.
bogota··on Pijul: Version-Control Post-Git [video]
Not sure how i feel about “ML” that would likely change over time being used in a VCS. This would make commits or whatever unit of work you want to save at non deterministic. Also as people we still care about file format and likely want to track it. If anything what you are talking about would just be a different view in a VCS that would still want to track file level changes if it was ever adopted.

For what your talking about though I don’t think the fundamental VCS really matters. You can do everything you are talking about with a tool that uses the diff from git.
