bogota··on It's time for an inequality index for cryptocurrencies distribution
Crypto will be the death of HN. OPs comment is something that has been talk about since 2012 and looking at one or two parent comments they cover the depth that is required to answer why this doesn’t matter or can’t be determined. However it’s crypto so now we have 50+ comments about why X thinks Y is stupid. Why crypto is a waste. Why crypto is the best. But its all 100% stupid unfounded word vomit.

HN has shows crypto is too polarizing of content to have intelligent discussion here.

IMO is should be banned from the site. You could replace these comments with comments from a reddit post that hit the front page and you wouldn’t know the difference.

bogota··on It's time for an inequality index for cryptocurrencies distribution
I think this comment is a waste under its own assertion. No?
bogota··on How bad is my gas stove?
Its not about power or speed for me. Whenever i visit my parents i hate cooking anything because the electric stoves release heat in bursts then turn off for a bit then a huge burst. It’s impossible to cook anything the way you want . Normally i just go for overcooking everything. But in general i find cooking relaxing and that stove turns it into something that makes me mad every morning.

Maybe this is specific to the stove they have though. I have and will continue to use gas because of this.

bogota··on FSB arrests REvil ransomware gang members
Sometimes you are downvoted here for having a different opinion. See any crypto thread. However in your case it’s because you added nothing to the discussion. If that is your preferred way of communicating reddit might be better for you.
bogota··on Deta Cloud – Developer-friendly cloud platform
What do you take a small cut of? You keep saying this but it doesn’t seem to make sense to anyone in this thread.
bogota··on An annoyance with Debian postinstall scripts during package upgrades
Why is anyone still using packages for bloated software like plex? Pull the docker container and call it a day.
bogota··on US returns $154M in bitcoins stolen by Sony employee
Im trying to imagine it can you help me? Just seems like a classic slippery slope fallacy to me though.
bogota··on Don't use Digital Ocean (DO) for production
This could be written about any cloud provider. I for instance have had a much better time using DO than other cloud services but it’s all anecdotal. If your trying to optimize for customer support buy and run your own datacenter.
bogota··on Reddit files to go public
I hate making a ton of money and giving everyone in my family a better life. Really sucks.

The things you are holding people accountable for are very questionable in almost all cases. In most cases it just comes off as jealousy that someone is doing better than you.

I’m all for being held accountable. But i put very little weight in public opinion being something that we should even think about at this point.

bogota··on Reddit files to go public
… i said another flavor and im clearly commenting on the driving factor behind engagement. But yeah it has threads.
bogota··on Reddit files to go public
Reddit is now a rage generating machine outside of the small niche subreddits. The business is built on rage and some stupid investors in WSB who are enjoying a long bull market.

Doesn’t mean it won’t do well but its just another flavor of facebook.

bogota··on Reddit files to go public
I mean… browse through HN for the day. According to its users you shouldn’t work at any company that pays well because they are all evil. At a certain point you just don’t care what people are writing on forums.
bogota··on Americans overestimate social mobility in their country
How is it a zero sum game? I see this said a lot here without any proof? It this just taken as true and no proof is needed?
bogota··on Blockchains don't solve problems that are interesting to me
That is a pretty limited view of what blockchains solve these days. This reads like someone looked into Bitcoin once ten years ago and then applied that to everything that came after it.

You don’t have to be interested in it but I hardly find this blog as a compelling or well thought out reason for finding them boring. It’s more like a reason for why you want to stay ignorant about the tech which no one asked you to know about in the first place.

bogota··on Amazon is bypassing supply chain chaos with chartered ships and long-haul planes
It’s great wishful thinking but I really dont think our government can pull it off at this point. Maybe 30 years ago but not in today’s environment of everyone trying to screw the other side over at all costs.

Personally im happy we at least have one company who can get me stuff in a decent amount of time. But i gets it’s fun to throw out f the big company the government should do that. It’s not like it took thousands of well paid people years and years of work to develop that supply chain so im sure it’s as simple as “let the government do it”.

It’s the same in every Uber/Lyft comment thread. “It’s just a simple backend app why do they need so many people”. “I could do that in a year with a small team”. Yeah have fun dealing with every single state, city, country’s different regulations and requirements. “It’s JUST an app”.

I realize a lot of engineers have this problem. They oversimplify everything except the code they are working on and dismiss it as easy or unnecessary. I did early in my career as well but im surprised how prevent it is here.

bogota··on Bitcoin Price Tumbles After Wall Street Selloff
Always fun to see HN hot takes on bitcoin. Similar to browsing the buttcoin subreddit. But apparently this group of people is much more enlightened than everyone else.
bogota··on Bitcoin Price Tumbles After Wall Street Selloff
Market cap is not real money
bogota··on Bank transfers as a payment method
.. wait until you find out what cash is used for.
bogota··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
Why don’t you under That people with real wealth aren’t making money through a W2? Tax brackets only apply to the middle class and upper middle class.
bogota··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
This is wildly irresponsible and terrible advice
bogota··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
HN does have a downvote button you just don’t have enough reputation to use it yet.
bogota··on Used car market gets even more bizarre
That doesn’t seem that crazy to me.
bogota··on Uber, DoorDash and similar firms can’t defy the laws of capitalism after all
“Are all pretty simple crud application at their core”. No. Really no. Your understanding of the complexity of these applications and what they do invalidate everything else you try to pitch.
bogota··on Uber, DoorDash and similar firms can’t defy the laws of capitalism after all
Please explain what you think a ponzi scheme is. Because losing money on something isn’t close to the definition
bogota··on Robinhood says millions of customer names, email addresses taken in data breach
Im not sure about your case but if you did any trading in that calendar year they might have been forced to keep your data until they sent out all the required tax forms to customers.

If that is not the case then yes its super annoying how hard it is to actually remove your data from websites.

bogota··on Person Furious That Someone Right Click Saved Their Precious NFT
You only feel that way because only stupidity and anger is broadcast widely over all forms of media now. It’s what sells ads and clicks. Until that changes we are living in a rage world and it’s great for sales.
bogota··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
I still have to collect all the documents and give them to the person. The time to file once i gather everything is negligible and unless i have a very complex year i just do it myself.

Just paying someone to do stuff doesn’t solve everything unless you are some level of rich I don’t understand where someone has access to all your accounts and does it for you.

bogota··on Banks, gangsters and the strange resurgence of cash
The economist has been killing me for a long time. They use to have what I thought were good articles or maybe i was just less informed although I don’t think that has changed in the past 2 years when i noticed a huge drop in quality.

If anyone has any good news sources please let me know. The economist was the last thing i was reading before it stopped putting out quality content.

bogota··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
I hate wasting at least a day if not more of my life every year filing. As time goes on and i have more assets the time to file goes up as well and gathering all the required documents with every bank having different timelines is a nightmare.

But what can I do about it? I would imagine if it went to a vote overwhelmingly people would say no I don’t want to file like this every year. But here we are and honestly I don’t have much energy left these days to be mad about anything as it’s wearing on my health.

bogota··on Signal is experiencing technical difficulties
I wouldn’t say it sucks but they have had a number of times where it’s clear something is going on for an hour or so but it’s resolved without any notice being issued.

Overall i would say its reliable but not communicating out issues is a really fast way to lose user trust.
