boffinism··on The bargain at the heart of the BBC is fraying
It's worth saying the BBC has been 'doomed' for as long as I can remember. Simply pointing out that it doesn't make sense doesn't seem to have much effect on its continued presence.
boffinism··on Todo-or-die – Provides procedural macros that act as checked reminders
Carry on then.
boffinism··on Todo-or-die – Provides procedural macros that act as checked reminders
Is this just Ruby's https://github.com/searls/todo_or_die reimplemented in Rust?
boffinism··on The Begum's Fortune
> It is noteworthy as the first published book in which Verne was cautionary, and somewhat pessimistic about the development of science and technology.

The only other book in which Verne was similarly pessimistic that I'm aware of is 'Paris in the Twentieth Century', which was originally considered too negative for publication.

boffinism··on Dropbox Engineering Career Framework
New challenges? Opportunities to make a positive impact? Mentorship and management experience? Increased autonomy or flexibility?
boffinism··on Confessions of a bitter cripple (2015)
I was brought up to believe we should aim to save the people least able to save themselves. That we shouldn't make comparative value judgements about human lives in that situation. In the old days they said "women and children first", not "strong, attractive geniuses first".
boffinism··on Confessions of a bitter cripple (2015)
Sorry, what? You're saying that an attractive person is more deserving of being saved than an unattractive person? Just so you know, a bunch of people, whi identify as 'not eugenicists' do not agree with you.
boffinism··on Developers Who Use Spaces Make More Money Than Those Who Use Tabs (2017)
Er... that's a simple, widely accepted and understood standard, with a broad set of tooling that can detect and auto-correct it. Crucially, it's something that doesn't really matter. Therefore, because it's, in Ruby world, the norm, the great thing is that we can, by default, just accept that norm, never think about it again, and get on with our day.

Bikeshedding, on the other hand, is taking a contrarian stance and deliberately arguing over stuff that really doesn't matter so that we spend time and energy arguing over that instead of over the code itself and what it's trying to achieve...

boffinism··on Developers Who Use Spaces Make More Money Than Those Who Use Tabs (2017)
See also the first "good" example at https://github.com/rubocop/ruby-style-guide#no-double-indent, and the placement of 'from' in it
boffinism··on Developers Who Use Spaces Make More Money Than Those Who Use Tabs (2017)
Ok, so first of all, I'd strongly advise you not to use tabs for Ruby, just because it's a community very heavily based on stylistic consistency, and the community is very much on the side of spaces (see https://ukupat.github.io/tabs-or-spaces/).

For one example of something that wouldn't work with tabs (although not my original point, see the whitespace between `key:` and `key,` on line 66 here: https://github.com/rails/rails/blob/main/actionmailbox/app/c...

For an example closer to my original point, see line 13 here: https://github.com/heartcombo/devise/blob/master/app/control...

boffinism··on Developers Who Use Spaces Make More Money Than Those Who Use Tabs (2017)
Yes. Ruby, for example, is entirely space-based, because it encourages line breaks after the first of a list of arguments, where the second needs to be aligned with the first, but depending on the number of characters in the method being called, the first argument could be anywhere in the line.
boffinism··on Ask HN: Why are most dev.to links submitted to HN dead?
Argh, when the rest of the Internet uses 'dead' in the context of links to mean broken, why would HN use it to mean something else?
boffinism··on Ask HN: Why are most dev.to links submitted to HN dead?
Oh man, TIL that on HN, when people talk about 'dead links' they mean something specific and different to what the rest of the internet means when they talk about dead links.
boffinism··on Ask HN: Why are most dev.to links submitted to HN dead?
They're... Not? I looked through the 20 most recent links and 19 worked fine. One 404d but it was an article submitted 3 months ago.

Maybe dev.to was flubbing when you looked?

boffinism··on The metabolic face of migraine
Didn't work for me. I think it's easy to come up with a pet theory ("migraines are caused by X, and therefore prevented by Y"), especially when there is some science to support you. But when you dig into it, you learn that while some treatments are wildly effective for a few people, no treatment is widely effective. If it were, migraines wouldn't be such a thing in the developed world.

So by all means, let people know that Riboflavin might help them, but be wary of prescribing it to all and sundry when in truth, it will only help a minority.

boffinism··on I was terrible at crosswords so I built an AI to do them
In the UK, terrible puns are de rigeur, but the answer has to be a recognisable standalone word or phrase. So 'poisoned pen' could be an answer, and the clue could conceivably contain a pasta-based pun on that, but 'poisoned penne' could not.
boffinism··on I was terrible at crosswords so I built an AI to do them
So in the UK 'poisoned spaghetti' would not be acceptable as a cryptic crossword answer, because it's not a _recognisable_ standalone phrase, even if it's a thing that could exist.

boffinism··on How Not to Run a Vulnerability Disclosure Program
This feels, frankly, childish. The privacy policy that has him so incensed is just an explanation, in clear English, of how information is stored and processed. All they are saying is "if you send us information, please make sure you're happy with what we'll do with it".
boffinism··on Show HN: Remote Hunt – Search engine for remote jobs
Please let me filter by a company's timezone/citizenship requirements? If it's "work anywhere within 3 hours of GMT -8", or "we can only hire EU citizens" then that immediately rules out lots of companies for lots of people.
boffinism··on Ask HN: How would you store 10PB of data for your startup today?
They're a data storage service.
boffinism··on Show HN: Free Remote jobs search platform with verified handpicked jobs
Pet peeve: please allow filtering by location and/or nationality requirements. So many remote jobs have them, but half the time you only find out when you apply that it's for, e.g. US citizens only, or GMT-5 to -8 etc.

There's only value there for as long as that particular blockchain is still considered authoritative and interesting.

Cool, cool, but there are _so_ many ways of providing the same user experience of digital ownership without involving a blockchain. So why not go with something simpler?
boffinism··on Google Analytics: Stop feeding the beast
I really didn't want to use Google Analytics for a personal site (details in bio), but because it's a non-monetised personal site I really didn't want to spend money to know how many visitors I had, but because I'm trying to learn about content I really did want to know how many visitors I had, because that's a good way of discovering what content resonates etc.

I tried PanelBear, but because I briefly hit the front page of HN I blew through their free tier in less than a day.

I wish there was something very basic that had a more generous free tier. At the moment my site literally apologises for using GA.
