bodas··on Tech Giants Take Their Talent Hunt to Cambridge, UK
Even on a selfish level, the extra 2-3 weeks of PTO in UK is easily more important than the extra compensation in the US. What's the point of having more money if you are stuck in an office for more of the year and can only spend it on material goods? As you say, for women the difference in maternity leave is laughable.
bodas··on WhatsApp sends Cease and Desists for apps that use native Android APIs
I don't believe that. They never installed Whatsapp? The intersection of people who build chat accessory apps and people who have never installed Whatsapp is surely empty.
bodas··on Why standard Indonesian is not spoken throughout Indonesia
"laki" actually an example of a word that changes its meaning when reduplicated instead of creating a plural. "laki" means husband and "laki-laki" means man or male. So you have to be careful about using for producing plurals. Generally Indonesians prefer to denote number contextually e.g. by saying "one apple" or "many apple".
bodas··on Why standard Indonesian is not spoken throughout Indonesia
It is democracy and free speech that is enabling Islamic politics in Indonesia. The alternative is a strongman who imposes secularism. Indonesia already tried that, it is not so good for minorities.
bodas··on Why standard Indonesian is not spoken throughout Indonesia
> It seems likely to me that people who are speaking Indonesian as a first language (e.g. Jakartans) have a substantially larger vocabulary than those that are speaking it as a second language (e.g. Yogyakartans).

They are speaking Indonesian as a second native language, they will acquire Javanese and Indonesian at the same time but use Javanese in conversation and Indonesian when consuming TV, books and in school. So their grasp of formal Indonesian is going to depend mostly on education level.

As for colloquial Indonesian, due to the internet new colloquialisms spread much more rapidly to other parts of Indonesia. So it probably depends on how old said Yogyakartan is.

bodas··on Blocked by JSConf.eu Twitter account
Twitter realises it is stupid. However many of their technologically illiterate users don't and when they tried to change it there was an outcry that Twitter was helping abuse or something silly like that. Keeping the feature is as is easier than educating their users how computers work.
bodas··on Study reports cell phones may be making us hypersocial, rather than antisocial
Online interactions are just different. Yes they are not the same as IRL interactions, but they can be made around a shared interest, particularly something that might be hard to find where you live. So they can be more important.
bodas··on We may have answered the Fermi Paradox: We are alone in the universe
The Fermi paradox concerns the galaxy, not the rest of the universe which is too far away to know anything about.
bodas··on Montreal Moving Day: what happens when a whole city moves house at once
To be clear, if it's an emergency door in a large building where a crush could occur, it will open outwards. But most residential buildings aren't big enough to require that, except for large tower blocks.
bodas··on Montreal Moving Day: what happens when a whole city moves house at once
It's also for fire safety reasons that doors open inwards in the UK. It means that the door can't be blocked from the outside.
bodas··on Leslie Lamport Tells Mathematicians How to Write Proofs (2014)
Finitism sounds like a good idea actually because Mathematicians have a terribly bad habit of playing with infinity when they could be doing real work :)
bodas··on Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America
Inflation is an indication, it's not actually measuring anything, because it has so many parameters you can literally make it whatever value you want.
bodas··on How not to structure database-backed web apps: performance bugs in the wild
That's a good thing, I think. Programmers should have a good understanding of general algorithms but it's up to the frameworks themselves to reduce the need to be "mastered". I don't want to spend time mastering a particular framework because that knowledge is not portable across languages.
bodas··on Model predicts we're the only advanced civilization in the observable universe
I think the point is that they would have colonised Earth already. It is comparing the age of the Earth (billions of years) to the size of the galaxy (100kly)
