bobisme··on First Female Chess Grandmaster Sues Netflix for ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Insult
It's a work of historical fiction that fictionalized history in order to tell a fictional story about a fictional character. Not a documentary. Like Netflix says, the case has no merit. they're not saying her feelings have no merit or that they didn't say what they said, just that the lawsuit has no merit and they have a legal right to say what they said.

It's an extremely dangerous precedent to set that anyone offended by fiction can sue the artist and win. that precedent would also have the inverse effect that an independent author could write a piece of fiction where Netflix lost to Blockbuster and went bankrupt then Netflix sues that author for offending and misrepresenting the company's history.

> complex apps like gmaps and Google docs were written entirely in JS

I always assumed complex Google apps from that era were built with GWT, which would mean Java.

bobisme··on Microsoft is fixing the Outlook bug that causes “:)” to revert to “J”
That's what that was!? I aways wondered why some people would end their emails to me with "J". At first I thought it was a typo, then I thought it was just some encoding issue. Never knew I was missing out on smiles.
bobisme··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
Tab is great for auto-complete.
bobisme··on Researchers Teaching Robots to Feel and React to Pain
This is the moment that our robot overlords will point back to in order to justify their cruel reign.
bobisme··on Ask HN: If one works over 40hrs/week, can they claim more years of experience?
I think it's stupid too, but every job posting lists required years of experience.
bobisme··on Ask HN: If one works over 40hrs/week, can they claim more years of experience?
Ok, thanks. I was thinking more from the point of view that programming is a skill and skills develop with hours of practice.
bobisme··on 2016 Stack Overflow Developer Survey Results
I'm surprised average hours per week or per year wasn't on the list. This also just confirms how grossly underpaid I am.
bobisme··on Dsxyliea
Maybe this is important, not because it an accurate representation of dyslexia, but because it can simulate the effect of it. I could read everything pretty quickly and accurately except for some of the longest words, but I got this feeling of my brain's CPU overheating. At the end of the article I was frustrated and tired. I wanted to stop reading. This is coming from someone who probably reads tens of thousands (or more) of words per day of articles, emails, comments, and source code.
bobisme··on Google Jibe: Better carrier messaging for everyone
`font-weight: 100` and `color: #757575` for body text? It's barely readable on a retina display. It's an eyesore on my PC.
bobisme··on Markdeep
That's because underlining is inferior typography. It's from back in the typewriter days when the only way to add emphasis was to back up and put underscores underneath the text. Either bold or italic is more preferable.
bobisme··on First Go challenge – binary decoding
Might want to change that one discount code not to be "byfag25."
bobisme··on Self Hell in Python
Wow. How did I go years without knowing this about the repl?
bobisme··on Apple: Update on National Security and Law Enforcement Orders
Does this mean that because the previous statement, "Apple has never received an order under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act," is missing, that they have received at least one order?
bobisme··on Ask HN: I'm a chronic procrastinator – how do I break it?
Thanks, I was wondering why this page wouldn't compile.
bobisme··on PEP 8 Modernisation
Thanks for pointing that out. Also, the second link, being a perfectly clear and readable side-by-side diff is exactly the reason why 79 chars is important.
bobisme··on PEP 8 Modernisation
I always stick to 79 chars and stick to the latter method for indentation. I am completely happy with the readability of my code as a result. Thus, I'm not really happy with the new 99 char rule.
bobisme··on Do we need a new PDF reader?
The only PDF reader I have installed is Chrome, and I'm pretty happy with it.
bobisme··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
As somebody who sits at computer all day, who is too cheap to buy equipment, too embarrassed to be seen exercising by others, and who hates the idea of devoting an hour a day to physical agony, this appeals to me.
bobisme··on Startup hustle: Why two men decided to sleep together in a van for months on end
Unfortunate headline wording.
bobisme··on New font "Dyslexie" helps people with dyslexia read
I remember seeing this on reddit a long time ago. Then a couple days later a redditor created a cheaper alternative: http://www.pixelscript.net/gilldyslexic/ Then, when I was tring to find the link, I found an open-source alternative: http://opendyslexic.org/
bobisme··on Dear Gmail, please stop taking your UX cues from the spamsite school of design?
I believe the new compose window is inspired by Sparrow, which used to have the same rage-inducing flaw, but they eventually fixed it.
bobisme··on I hired someone with Asperger's – now what?
I believe with most psychological or mental conditions, the phrase "a person with ..." is used, putting the person before the condition. Just like you don't call a person with mental retardation a "retard."
bobisme··on Ask HN: What other online communities are you a member of?
http://bit.ly/reddweb (my web dev multi-reddit).
bobisme··on The New Super Thin iMac
Every photo on apple's site is a bit deceptive. Here's the real profile: http://images.apple.com/imac/design/images/evolution_today.j...
bobisme··on Ask HN: Which version of Python do HN'ers prefer at this point?
2.7 - Because of Django (mainly).
bobisme··on Show HN: Hulu With Me (Firefox/Chrome add-on + Node)
Thanks. I've got a friend who moved across the country. I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Recently we've been using synchtube (http://www.synchtube.com/) which works really well. Now if there were only a way to do this with netflix.
