bobiny··on Facebook collecting people's data even when accounts are deactivated
Most emails have unsubscribe button, it’s easier that restraining order I think.
bobiny··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
I thought Hellboy was a bad movie, because it’s more tell than show. I think voiceover is appropriate in special cases like Dexter’s inner monologue, because it shows separation of his public and private persona. I wouldn’t mind exposition scene at some point if it fits in the story, like for example someone telling a bedtime tale.
bobiny··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
I read less books than when I was school age. I have a couple that are sitting in Books app that I read a few pages at a time.

I think the “problem” is twofold: 1) phones are too much 2) too many books

1: using a book used to be easier than computer. You had to turn it on, wait, sit in a chair. With book it’s just grab and start reading in any position. People were/are reading standing up in Moscow metro. Computer was also limited in what you can do with it: I had a few games, a few programms and if I wanted more, it’s either going to a store for CD or using a slow Dial-up (check if no one is talking on the phone or expecting a call). With smartphone now there is Youtube, games and a ton of text that talks back to you (like HN or Twitter).

2: I find that many books and movies just say too much. I went out of the movie theater from Hellboy reboot when they started explaining the lore right away. I don’t mind a bit of exposition, but a film is not the right medium imo. Similarly with books: I feel like at least some of them could be a series of Substack posts if not Twitter threads.

So I agree that books are dying out a bit, but I’m optimistic that they are being replaced with mediums more suitable for the message. Also I hope there will be more specialized gadgets like ReMarkable tabled that you can’t do everything with.

bobiny··on Ikea Vindriktning Air Quality Sensor Review and Accuracy
I like my Netatmo. I see that it costs $200 on Amazon for main module + you can connect 3 additional ones for other rooms — they cost $86 each. It shows CO2 (notifies when it's high on smartphone), temperature, relative humidity and noise level.
bobiny··on Facebook, Ray-Ban debut picture-taking smart glasses
I don't see this in Axios or AP article, source?
bobiny··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
I'm not a techie, but I think iOS already has similar technology: Camera detects faces, Photos can recognize people and objects (or cats) — all with help of AI (or ML). I think they are just expanding this and combining with "share".
bobiny··on Canberra asks to introduce detection capabilities in encrypted communication
I don't think so. I've read it is removed from app stores in Iran and China. A few other countries like Egypt try to block it.
bobiny··on Canberra asks to introduce detection capabilities in encrypted communication
I guess it would be a win for Android - if Signal is removed from AU app store and/or blocked by local ISPs (like in Russia), the way would be to sideload and use VPN.
bobiny··on Xsolla CEO says firing using an algorithm-based solution protect minorities
I bet they have some visualization to show in court in case of a discrimination lawsuit. Also why bother with discrimination if your goal is profit increase?
bobiny··on Xsolla CEO says firing using an algorithm-based solution protect minorities
It protects the company when you fire minorities, because you do it base on data. It's like proving that you've bought stock fairly (not according to insider information) by showing research.
bobiny··on Xsolla CEO says firing using an algorithm-based solution protect minorities
I wonder what would the body of this recommendation be? "Worked poorly by our standards, but maybe will be more enthusiastic in your company. Otherwise great dude (AI-rated at 78% "great" and 87% "dude")"
bobiny··on Xsolla CEO says firing using an algorithm-based solution protect minorities
I gathered that he finds his business special and lucrative, especially by his native city standards. I think he presumes that even a "bad" employee at his company will find a nice spot in a more ordinary one.

bobiny··on Ask HN: Anyone here built successful SaaS/startup just for money?
I have a software idea that can change the world a little and I could use help. As for your question: I think building a company that makes a lot of money requires a vision. If you are very good at making software maybe employment at a wealthy company is easier. I hear pay is really nice there.
bobiny··on EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales (2017)
But isn't it a different license like consumer vs business? I mean when OEMs are used for pre-built PCs or when it's activated by end user.
bobiny··on EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales (2017)
I've read that these cheap OEM licenses could be cancelled after some time. Dunno if true or not. Could you give a link for EU courts' rulings?
bobiny··on Apple's camera design choices from the iPhone 6S Plus to the 12 Pro Max [pdf]
And pictures load so slowly. I found another site with R6 picture samples and they are compared with iPhone 12 pro (mostly), Galaxy s21 ultra and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra https://www.xda-developers.com/sharp-aquos-r6-hands-on/
bobiny··on Apple's camera design choices from the iPhone 6S Plus to the 12 Pro Max [pdf]
I think it’s similar to analogue vs digital filmmaking. Analogue is harder to do, but can be uniquely amazing.

Maybe the are happy selling to Japanese market’s geeks exclusively. By geek I mean this kind of tech fans who don’t mind figuring out the interface. As for this particular device I think Japan is a perfect test market: they seem to love DSLRs and this phone is sort of a pure camera experience vs neural network enhanced multi-camera setup. I hope it catches on so more companies make such phones and drive prices down.
bobiny··on Apple's camera design choices from the iPhone 6S Plus to the 12 Pro Max [pdf]
In my experience with dual camera it does portraits and HDR with sky good, but not so great with greenery. I’m enthusiastic about larger sensors like in Sharp Aquos R6 https://www.phonearena.com/news/sharp-aquos-r6-camera-sample...
bobiny··on What Does My Site Cost?
I think that's what antimonopoly laws are for. As a Russia citizen, mobile and internet prices in supposedly more technologically advanced countries just blow my mind.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
I agree in some respects. It's hard to leave Google and Facebook because their accounts are used to login to other sites and services. Also when you buy apps and switch mobile OS you don't have a right for a free copy of this app from a different store, i.e. not real ownership because your app is tethered to the store.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
I mean various antitrust court cases and government hearings. Like recent Apple vs Epic.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
Same. I think these AI companies make too many assumptions on what people want and need. It's like people are lab mice they watch in terms of some experiment, but don't communicate with beside asking to name interests like technology or cryptocurrency and rate the quality of the call.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
They don't have an ownership right on attention. Railway company might have some unique long term lease on the land. Each user can extract their data with takeout, delete account and if they must – use another service.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
I think finding similarities and generalization is part of scientific process, but "good billionaire" is a bad category.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
I'd say not monopoly, but anticompetitive behaviour like leveraging company's size, reach and cash to "forcefully" acquire competitors.
bobiny··on View: Warren Buffett and the Myth of the ‘Good Billionaire’
They don't have dibs on natural resources like oil or physical space like with railroads. In theory skillful people can create better analogues of Facebook and Instagram that would serve less ads, be more meaningfully engaging, collect less data etc.
