bobchadwick··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
"...he was willing to put pressure on Netanyahu in a way that President Biden was unwilling to do."

Unwilling or unable? Netanyahu hated Biden and has done everything in his power to sabotage anything Democrats have done to try to help resolve the conflict, even prior to Oct 7.

bobchadwick··on Anti-*: The Things We Do but Not All the Way
I have a drawerful of antiraspberrypi and antiesp devices.
bobchadwick··on The road that killed Legend Jenkins was working as designed
The only issue I have with this article is the assertion that we demonize drivers in cases like this. More often than not, we let the driver off the hook and call it an accident.
bobchadwick··on A lost decade chasing distributed architectures for data analytics?
It's not the point of the blog post, but I love the fact that the author's 2012 MacBook Pro is still useable. I can't imagine there are too many Dell laptops from that era still alive and kicking.
bobchadwick··on Ask HN: How to Make Friendster Great?
For me personally, anything using the phrasing make ______ great again is a huge turn off. Maybe dispense with language that a lot of people might find to be divisive if your goal is to make it a positive environment.
bobchadwick··on Education Secretary Wants 'A1' in Classrooms
To add to your point, we elected George W. Bush again after hearing four years of his gibberish (and after he, you know, starting a devastating war). That was 20 year ago.
bobchadwick··on Education Secretary Wants 'A1' in Classrooms
Wait, am I reading this wrong, or is she seriously proposing replacing kindergarteners with A1?
bobchadwick··on When I converted my home from gas to electric my utility bills nearly doubled
My home in the US Northeast was renovated a few years back and we went from gas heating, cooking, and water heating to all electric (heat pumps for HVAC and water; induction for cooking). As part of the renovation, we added insulation and performed air sealing. Our bill has gone up significantly in the winter, despite the home being better insulated.

That said, I've heard gas costs have also increased recently, so I'd likely be seeing higher costs if we hadn't converted.

bobchadwick··on Bikes in the age of tariffs
I think you’re right, and they’ve found their useful idiot in Trump.

As for Trump himself, I think he truly believes the rest of the world is taking advantage of the US and tariffs are a way of setting things right. My guess is that in his view, the country (or at the least the rich people he cares about) will benefit from all this.

bobchadwick··on Bikes in the age of tariffs
I think the author, Jan Heine, is originally from Germany. He does own and operate a US-based company, so it's not that surprising that he's writing from that perspective.
bobchadwick··on KOReader: Open-Source eBook Reader
Are you able to sync progress? I can access my calibre-web library, but I've been unable to figure out how to sync progress.
bobchadwick··on xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B
In related news, I know you are, but what am I?
bobchadwick··on BigQuery pricing model cost us $10k in 22 seconds
As others have pointed out, it's pretty easy to learn that typically using LIMIT doesn't affect query cost. That said, one surprising side effect of adding clustering is that LIMIT actually works as you'd expect it to. See this post by Felipe Hoffa, formerly of Google: https://hoffa.medium.com/bigquery-optimized-cluster-your-tab....
bobchadwick··on BleachBit is a free and open-source disk space cleaner
It looks like the maintainers have had a good bit of fun with it: https://www.bleachbit.org/cloth-or-something.
bobchadwick··on BleachBit is a free and open-source disk space cleaner
If it's good enough for a Secretary of State, it's good enough for me!
bobchadwick··on DOGE staffer is trying to reroute FEMA funds
Was that executive power really accrued as a result of a resistance to Trump during his first term? My understanding is that the executive branch has been exerting more power for while now, regardless of who has been in office.

And does it really matter? The authority for doing many of the things Trump's current admin is doing don't actually fall to the executive branch; they're doing them anyway.

bobchadwick··on New DOGE site update breaks down government jobs by salary/age/headcount
Think the site uses SQL?
bobchadwick··on How about trailing commas in SQL?
That's correct, and I absolutely love it. If I move to a new role where BigQuery is not the data warehouse of choice, I think this will be the thing I'll miss most.
bobchadwick··on What's the Deal with Magnetic Fields?
69 Love Songs is brilliant as a concept album, but Charm of the Highway Strip is my personal favorite.
bobchadwick··on Walgreens replaced fridge doors with smart screens. It's now a $200M fiasco
Stupid things like these screens and so many items being locked up makes me think these corporate retailers aren't actually interested in having people buy stuff from them.
bobchadwick··on Show HN: Shelly – A pure and vanilla shell-like interface for the web
Also not to be confused with the iOS SSH client: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/shelly-ssh-client/id989642999
bobchadwick··on Home Assistant Presence Simulation
I used this last week! I was out of town and a friend texted me letting me know the lights in my house were on. I got such a sense of joy in knowing that it was working as intended.
bobchadwick··on Wells Fargo Fires over a Dozen for 'Simulation of Keyboard Activity'
Or an analog wristwatch on with a mouse on top of it.
bobchadwick··on Show HN: MuscleWiki Workout Generator – Generate unique workouts
Very cool! It'd be nice to be able to choose muscle by name. I'm interested in tennis-focused strength training and most guides list the muscles to focus on by name. My knowledge of human anatomy is too limited to be able to locate those muscles on a map of a body. If I could search for muscles by name, it'd be easier to indicate which muscles I wanted to focus on.
bobchadwick··on ESPHome
I use Home Assistant for doing most of what you're asking for. This integration works great for adjusting light level and temperature: https://github.com/basnijholt/adaptive-lighting.

My home has an ERV and I use a couple Shelly relays (one for power and the other to boost airflow) integrated into HA to modulate the amount of fresh air I bring in, currently based on indoor/outdoor temperature and humidity. I don't have an air quality sensor, but if I had one I could easily integrate that into my automations.

bobchadwick··on Is It Dry Yet?
I roughly followed this approach: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/clothes-dryer-automati.... It worked surprisingly well, but the battery died in the sensor and I guess I didn't see enough value in getting the notifications so I never bothered changing it.
bobchadwick··on What is a pig butchering scam? (2023)
As did Search Engine: https://pjvogt.substack.com/p/whos-behind-these-scammy-text-.... That episode takes a really dark turn.
bobchadwick··on Japanese Handsaws: The Maebiki Ooga
It's not fetish. Unless you spend hundreds of dollars on a Lie-Nielsen or Veritas plane, this will be vastly superior to any other new plane: https://www.ebay.com/itm/116099802353

Made between 1933-1941, $69 plus shipping, and probably ready to start hogging away at some rough lumber.

bobchadwick··on A Social History of Jell-O Salad (2023)
I grew up Mormon in Utah and I don't recall seeing a savory Jell-O salad at any functions I ever attended.

Sweet "salads," usually served as side dishes, are very common, though. My favorite, which doesn't actually include Jell-O, is my mom's frog-eye salad. It's made up of acini di pepe pasta, whipped cream (preferably Cool Whip), and pineapple chunks, mixed with a sauce of pineapple juice thickened with eggs and flour. Yum!

bobchadwick··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
I'm embarrassed to admit that I bought a Gmail invite on eBay for $6 when it was still invite-only.
