bobanrocky··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
This is one of the most inane, fluff articles I’ve seen dumped in this site in a while. Nothing original, just a simplistic regurgitation of known stuff. Reads like lame, lazy LLM slop :(
bobanrocky··on What Sun got wrong
The 300+ comments here are a testament to the affection, respect, positive & negative feelings Sun employees had about it. Absolutely the best decade of my 30 year career in this industry!
bobanrocky··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
So true
bobanrocky··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
‘Incredible math potential’ .. Yeah right, your AI said so ?!
bobanrocky··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
We use xmpp for our company’s IOT product suite. Works quite well with its presence and messaging capabilities .. Backend runs ejabberd.
bobanrocky··on AI's debt binge can't last, hidden borrowing reaches $1.65T
Hopefully the general public doesn’t get stuck with the ‘too big to fail’ bill .. again :(
bobanrocky··on Nitpicking the shell history scene in 'Tron: Legacy'
Interesting indeed. The bit about Solaris -> Solar is nice/funny. I guess its an update to some system or kernel config file.

Or for super hacker points, edit appropriate binary using adb :)

bobanrocky··on The real cost of owning a home
Wow, moving every 2-5 years? I suppose it works with no kids, or spouse ..
bobanrocky··on The worst job interview I ever had
Umm .. pretty standard & generally lame line of questioning at many companies/countries. Sounds like you were offended or surprised by it?
bobanrocky··on Steve Jobs in Exile – New book on his years at NeXT Computer
What? Next an enterprise software company is one of the weirdest takes i’ve ever heard in my 3 decades in the industry. They were a workstation manufacturer with impressively cute UIs and an interesting software stack over MachOS
bobanrocky··on Mercedes-Benz commits to bringing back physical buttons
Agree. The only recent UI/safety advancents have been a good rear & side camera; and blind spot detection & warning system. The rest are for folks who should not be driving a vehicle at all.

Until reliable FSD becomes widespread, we ought to stop with these ‘incremental’ UI changes for the sake of it. Like the ridiculous ’take a coffee break’ indicator which is also incorrect mostly

bobanrocky··on How Mark Klein told the EFF about Room 641A [book excerpt]
That is an unfair insinuation - ‘that he sounds proud of it’. There are many reasons one stays quiet - like you are sole provider for a family, its beem going on for a while that you ignore/doubt its seriousness etc.
bobanrocky··on Using the internet like it's 1999
Your statement of ‘hardly anyone considered facebook part of the web’ is incorrect. Facebook became popular a bit after the Web had become quite mainstream. The idea of signing up for online services was not foreign to most of these folks. Now, AOL/Compuserve and such were more considered as non web.
bobanrocky··on A. J. Ayer – ‘What I Saw When I Was Dead’ (1988)
[flagged]
bobanrocky··on A perfectable programming language
YES, THIS (capitalized on purpose). Folks, please use reasonably correct writing syntax. You CAN do better .. At least think of the AIs consuming your writings.
bobanrocky··on Many African families spend fortunes burying their dead
In my experience (60 yrs, almost equally in India and the US) are that weddings are typically more suited as social occasions with fun, cheer, enjoyable music, food & drinks. Funerals also bring folks & families together, but its a sombre and more disciplined/rigid vibe. I know which one I prefer ..
bobanrocky··on Many African families spend fortunes burying their dead
Ok, so better to be poor and backward, eh ?
bobanrocky··on Many African families spend fortunes burying their dead
Ha, have you been to an indian wedding in India? Now that’s big big money. And the societal pressures to make it so are huge .. American weddings are so tame and sensible by comparison.

Far better to spend those $$ on weddings rather than funerals though !

bobanrocky··on Many African families spend fortunes burying their dead
Lots of buzzwords in your comment, but pointless. This is a complete waste of money, and a burden on the living to ‘show off’ their status. The ancient egyptian kings at least had the resources, power and wealth to build their pyramids..
bobanrocky··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
Well .. you probably thought the same when John was unmasking Theranos
bobanrocky··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
You do realize the author is the one that exposed the Theranos fraud ?
bobanrocky··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
Big stick?! More like whacking himself with a big stick.

Read up on his ‘playbook’ with russia, north korea, china etc ..

bobanrocky··on The Los Angeles Aqueduct Is Wild
If you are claiming that Caltrain is part of the grand high speed rail system, you are literally being taken for a ride
bobanrocky··on The Los Angeles Aqueduct Is Wild
This is a joke, right?
bobanrocky··on Learning Creative Coding
Another one trying to make some hay .. oh well
bobanrocky··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
Compiler theory and implementation is based on mathematical and logic principles. And hence much more provable and trustworthy than a LLM thats stitching together pieces of text based on ‘training’
bobanrocky··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
Nope, the number of remote roles are drastically reducing. If your are a sw dev/mgr, you’ll need to be at least hybrid to your company’s ‘tech center’
bobanrocky··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
Are you saying you want to be laid off with a nice package as you’ve been with the same employer for a long time? Couple of options: have a nice conversation with your manager and make this clear. The signs are clear that major s/w layoffs will happen in the next couple of years. Other option is to ease off - your high salary and low output will put you in the dustbin list
bobanrocky··on OpenAI agrees with Dept. of War to deploy models in their classified network
And h1 slaves
bobanrocky··on I spent 5 years in DevOps – Solutions engineering gave me what I was missing
Nope. Devops != any sort of pre-sales/post-sales/solution engineering.

It requires a more holistic, generalist view, and a degree of customer understanding, empathy, management and conversational skills well beyond typical devops.
