bobajeff··on Show HN: Open-source .docx editor library for building document apps
This looks really impressive. How hard was it to implement this in typescript?
bobajeff··on Native all the way, until you need text
Qt Bridges might be better if your project can use the `Qt Design Studio Enterprise license`. Otherwise Slint looks like the better option.

Not that I'd use either when I can just make a Web based UI most of the time and be done with it.

bobajeff··on Native all the way, until you need text
The link says litehtml is C++. I can't tell if it exposes an FFI (I bet not)

Of course blitz doesn't expose a FFI either and also if you need anything interactive you have to use the dioxius framework or implement you own APIs for that as well as take care of animation yourself.

bobajeff··on What's a mathematician to do? (2010)
I like to watch 3blue1brown too but I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to say his topics are accessible to normal folks. From my perspective I think it's more realistic to say he makes videos that shows you the beauty in math without having to understand it really. Which is valuable since most people get turned off on math because tiresome drills and tests hammered into them at school by people with zero interest in it.
bobajeff··on Mojo 1.0 Beta
I've been keeping my eye on mojo. Honestly though the thing I least like about Python is it's syntax.

Someone else here is bringing up Julia. Which I think is a fine language but the compiler error messages and the library documentation are not what I would want in a language as far along as it is. I'm also worried about the correctness issues I've read about in a blog awhile back. Also I don't feel like I can make the kind of Python module I want with it (because of binary size and time to first x)

That being said I'm only hoping that Mojo can become an option. But I really like to use a REPL and I like the dynamicness of Python. So I might not ever get around to doing anything outside of maybe Numpy for performance.

bobajeff··on PySimpleGUI 6
No, sorry, I wasn't referring to any library. I just meant a UI I made out of HTML, JavaScript and CSS.
bobajeff··on PySimpleGUI 6
I remember looking into GUI libraries for Python a while back and this one and qt came up.

However I ended up settling on making a Web UI served via FastAPI. I'm still happy about that decision but this one sounded really nice back then.

bobajeff··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
Imagine getting a car without a replaceable battery.
bobajeff··on OpenAI's $852B valuation faces investor scrutiny amid strategy shift, FT reports
That's my view too. I love what people are doing with this stuff. I really want to get a decent rig to start doing this stuff locally someday.
bobajeff··on Unverified: What Practitioners Post About OCR, Agents, and Tables
It's very surprising to me that the state of the art tools for data entry and digitizing still require a lot of supervision. From the article it's not that surprising that handwritten documents are harder for old-school OCR or AI as that can be hard even for humans in some cases. But tables and different layouts seem like low hanging fruit for vision models.
bobajeff··on Astral to Join OpenAI
This might not be bad as long as Astral is allowed to continue to work on improving ty, uv and ruff. I do worry about they'll get distracted by their Codex job duties though.
bobajeff··on Voxile: A ray-traced game made in its own engine and programming language
Kind of looks like like Minecraft if it was built out of Voxatron. (millions of Little destructible cubes) seems like a very very difficult thing to do at that scale. On top of that making a engine and a language. This guy must have interesting things to say.
bobajeff··on Show HN: A physically-based GPU ray tracer written in Julia
The prediction I was referring to was the one in the parent comment. (The one I was commenting under)
bobajeff··on Show HN: A physically-based GPU ray tracer written in Julia
It's says:

>the reference implementation from Physically Based Rendering (Pharr, Jakob, Humphreys)

I'd like to know a little about the process you went through for the port. That book * sounds like an excellent resource to start from but what was it like using it and the code?

* https://pbrt.org/

bobajeff··on Show HN: A physically-based GPU ray tracer written in Julia
As someone who currently uses dabbles in both. That prediction seems a bit unrealistic. Julia is a fantastic language but it has some trade offs that need to be considered. Probably the most well known is `time to first x`. Julia like Python is used comfortably in notebooks but loading libraries can take a minute, compared to Python where it happens right away. It may lead you to not reach for it when you want to do quick testing of something especially plotting. You can mitigate this somewhat by loading all the libraries you'll ever need at startup (preferably long before you are ready to experiment) but that assumes you already know what libraries you'll need for what you're wanting to try.
bobajeff··on I write games in C (yes, C) (2016)
I remember the creator of Kaiju engine stating something about C++ compilers producing slower code with C-style C++.
bobajeff··on Tadpole – A modular and extensible DSL built for web scraping
I like the idea of a DSL for scraping but my scrapers do more than extract text. I also download files (+monitor download progress) and intercept images (+ check for partial or failed to load images). So it seems my use case isn't really covered with this.
bobajeff··on Tadpole – A modular and extensible DSL built for web scraping
I had to look up what KDL is and what `Functional Source License, Version 1.1, ALv2 Future License` is.

So KDL is like another JSON or Yaml. FSL-1.1-ALv2 is an, almost but not really, open source license that after a 2 years becomes available under a real open source license. It's to prevent free loading from companies or something. Sounds fine to me actually.

bobajeff··on Deobfuscate JavaScript code using ChatGPT
Interesting. I wonder if this technique can be used to aid c decompilation in tools like Ghidra.
bobajeff··on Show HN: Coi – A language that compiles to WASM, beats React/Vue
I've been looking into UI libraries lately like Qt and Slint and wondered why they chose to create a DSL over just using css, html and a little bit of js. But I imagine C++ generation from a small DSL is easier than js.
bobajeff··on We got a new Linux distro in 2026 and it's incredible [video]
Very Impressive. Still, like many ricing setups, looks like it would be prone to breakage. Also, I don't have 2 GPUs. If it ever gets packaged into a complete system installable via apt instead a bunch of loosely connected scripts I would definitely try it.
bobajeff··on Wine 11.0
Flatpak can be pretty buggy with Wine I've had some programs misbehave cause it to eat up all my ram when using bottles for instance.
bobajeff··on High-Level Is the Goal
Yeah it's a call to action to improve the tooling but it's not the first one I've seen. Tooling really is under focused in many areas.

It would be nice if every language and library had a great working repl and a Jupyter Lab kernel and good mdn-like documentation and w3schools-like tutorials.

bobajeff··on High-Level Is the Goal
For those interested here's the talk that this is from:

bobajeff··on Show HN: Jax-JS, array library in JavaScript targeting WebGPU
This is really great. I don't do ML stuff. But I some mathy things that would benefit from running in the GPU so it's great to see the Web getting this.

I hope this will help grow the js science community.

bobajeff··on C Is Best (2025)
I love C and Assembly and I'm impressed by the things people can build in those languages and often (not always) I can understand the code written in it. It's also true that code written in it is available to every other language. For that I'm very happy, as I'm mostly working in higher level languages that can call things like sqlite.

Just imagine if all of Chromium was written in C and used simpler tools like GNU Make and Git for it's projects.

bobajeff··on C Is Best (2025)
Zig hasn't even had it's first release yet. And projects written in it still break in new releases. Given their stance on boringness and maturity it would make no sense for Sqlite to consider zig yet.
bobajeff··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
I've been using vscodium with basedpyright as I've thought it was supposed to be a open source version of pylance. I've got to say it's annoying about type errors and after changing it's setting to be less strict it still annoys me and I've even started littering my code with the their # ignore _____ .

I'm really glad the article mentioned ty as I'm going to try that today.

On zed I tried it but the font rendering hurt my eyes and UI seems to be glitchy and also doesn't support the drag and drop to insert links in markdown feature * I use all the time.

bobajeff··on Easel Turns One One year of building my own IDE in Clojure
Awesome work! I like the idea of being able to quickly make little tools in your IDE.

Coincidentally, lately I have been thinking of making an IDE using something like Theia or CodeMirror but am holding off because of time for my other projects.

bobajeff··on Loss32: Let's Build a Win32/Linux
That sounds nice. I agree, not having a UI editor making apps is a step back. However, you seem to be discussing mostly in past tense.

Maybe one day something like Lazarus or Avalonia would catch up but today I feel that Electron is best at what it does.
