boardwaalk··on Connect-Web: TypeScript library for calling RPC servers from web browsers
Thank you for the detailed reply!

Random thoughts: I personally would not mind requiring Protobuf payloads so the proxy portion can stay dumb — keeping proxies up to date sounds no fun. Losing inspectability (not having JSON) is a minus but not a deal breaker. Requiring servers to use a new library is a big lift for people, and hard to sell if what you have works. Having a proxy you can drop in the meantime, while getting client streaming at the same time, seems nice. In any case, having the shiny Typescript friendly libraries that can easily switch between gRPC-Web and Connect is nice, so thanks for that.

For what it’s worth, our servers are C++ and use Arrow Flight which why I’m even interested in client streaming at all (its DoPut method has a streaming argument). My current solution is to add a regular gRPC method that behaves similarly to DoPut but is a unary call for browser clients. Not terrible, but it’d be nice to not have to do that.

I may well take you up on filing an issue/pinging y’all on Slack.

boardwaalk··on Connect-Web: TypeScript library for calling RPC servers from web browsers
It looks like the Connect protocol supports client streaming, which gRPC-Web doesn’t, but the only way for a server to speak connect-web is to write it in Go and use their libraries?

What about servers in other languages? Are there any plans for f.e. Envoy support for going from Connect the frontend to gRPC on the backend? Like gRPC-Web to gRPC?

boardwaalk··on FlightRadar24 crashes due to surge in users tracking SPAR19
The plane carrying Nancy Pelosi around Asia and possibly to Taiwan I presume.
boardwaalk··on ImHex – A Hex Editor
I think there’s something off with the render scaling, because the pixels are enormous even when I set it to a non-fixed sized font (Monaco). I had to set 2x scaling and then it looked better but only because the text was enormous.

I recall this being something you had to pay attention to with imgui/glfw — probably just needs a small tweak.

boardwaalk··on Coinbase does not list securities. End of story
Avoiding the legal definition being fought over here for a second, putting "End of story." and "Period." in your blog post as chief legal officer is fairly unprofessional and a bit astounding when you're going up against a government agency if not entire government that could wipe you off the map.

I suppose hubris and cryptocurrencies go together, but it still struck me.

boardwaalk··on Tell HN: You can't hire because you don't post salary ranges
The thing is, people often start with a previous salary and a lifestyle/saving goals such that they have some expectations. Telling people to not start at salary, when most people will do so for good reason, is not particularly useful. I, personally, am not looking for 500k+ craziness, but I am expecting a baseline and you trying to waste time I’m not willing to unless I’m otherwise extremely motivated by what you do (very unlikely) is going to make me pass.

This is essentially Tinder “swipe left or right” and it should treated that way.

boardwaalk··on Carbon Language: An experimental successor to C++
You can do things the way you do them in C++ in Rust if you want. You could `cargo vendor`, you could fork a repo & depend on a specific commit, etc. It’s up to you have the self-control to do that though and not just shovel random dependencies into your project, that’s all.

Mostly you seem to be complaining that it’s just to add dependencies? (maybe put a ‘sleep’ in your bash prompt or something?) and maybe that the Rust ecosystem doesn’t have as many duplicate libraries as C++? (of course it doesn’t?)

boardwaalk··on Rust should not have provided `unwrap`
Yes, we should have unwrap. Rust would move towards insufferable if it did not — sort of like Go and its “you must use every variable” thing.

The way forward is a feature allows static checking of whether code paths could possibly panic so people can gradually mark their code as panic-free.

boardwaalk··on Governor Newsom announces California will make its own insulin
You could imagine that in quite a few states. California isn’t even on top in terms of GDP per capita (DC, MA, NY, AK, ND all rank higher, CT, WA, WY slightly below).
boardwaalk··on NimSkull: A Hard Fork of Nim
Nim was originally “Nimrod.” It’s probably a play on that.
boardwaalk··on NFTs Are Beanie Babies
This seems a bit insulting to apes, honestly. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen experiments that have shown non-human primates to be discerning with respect to cost/reward calculations.
boardwaalk··on Show HN: C3 – A C alternative that looks like C
The number of languages that have separate namespaces for the two things is very small. See all the C descendants that discarded that idea: C++, C#, Java, Rust, Go. You probably ought to just find a decent naming scheme to avoid those conflicts…
boardwaalk··on New MacBook Air with M2
You can spec it with or 16 or 24 GB and the CPU is going to be miles faster than your Thinkpad.

Sometimes I think people just want to feel good about their purchases… It’s 5 years old, it’s okay if it’s not top of the line anymore.

boardwaalk··on Virgil: A fast and lightweight programming language that compiles to WASM
I almost skipped over this because of WASM in the title. For me, WASM is neat but not actually something I need and just an extra layer for just running a program on a computer. So it's good to see it supports other targets. Now it just needs ARM support ;).
boardwaalk··on Virgil: A fast and lightweight programming language that compiles to WASM
Flipping through the tutorial, given the mentions of functional-style and concision, I'm surprised the control structures aren't expressions ala Rust.
boardwaalk··on Crypto firm Bitpanda lays off around 20% of its people
A single data point doesn’t give you any information about how much of the industry will fail. “Goes in line” —- yeah, because absolutely anything would fit.

boardwaalk··on Goodbye Zachtronics
There doesn’t have to be (as much) nonsense on a personal project where you’re only beholden to yourself, can pick your own tech, etc.

(I’m sure people also have less nonsense and make money from it, but I don’t right now.)

boardwaalk··on Making an Accurate Sleep() Function
There are good reasons to do things at certain times (like polling for input or rendering) or slowing down the render loop (adjustable frame rate cap not necessarily the same as refresh rate), and that's really the end of that.

Thinking this might be "intentionally hard" rather than "non-realtime operating systems are just sloppy" is silly.

boardwaalk··on Ohio State University secures trademark for use of the word 'THE' on clothing
I do a lot of busywork and I still can’t imagine being the lawyer tasked with fighting for this or even the person tasking that lawyer. What a horrible waste of time for all involved.

Somebody in the chain at some point shoulda stood up and said, “Nah, this is stupid,” and walked out.

boardwaalk··on Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2022
I agree this is a very unfortunate grouping of topics. The irony is that there’s a lot of cryptocurrency stuff that isn’t even well decentralized, so it’s almost an objectively bad grouping.
boardwaalk··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
> Because in 10 years, what currently exists as the only option on iPad and iPhone will be the only option on MacBooks too. There is a reason why the last WWDC was all about making the iPad feel more like MacOS and making parts of MacOS feel like iPadOS.

This is pure supposition and reasoning with a UI feature that you have to explicitly turn on that helps you manage windows in way that's more like a traditional desktop than ever for the iPad than it is like a tablet for macOS is quite a stretch.

You could have said the same about other features that iOS/macOS got and it would have been just as unconvincing too: Screen Time, Control Center, Focus, Share Play, anything for Messages or Safari, etc.

boardwaalk··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
Ah, I see. I figured they'd keep the input energy constant because otherwise you're not saying much at all (you could figure that the efficiency plummets and you'd be better off with a space heater).
boardwaalk··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
> The prototype delivers 100% heating at 5°F at double the efficiency, and 70% to 80% heating at -5°F and -10°F

So, 2 EER (2x of resistive heat) at 5F, 1.8 at -5F and 1.6 at -10F? Is that right? Seems awkwardly worded.

I wonder if we'll learn someday the NSO or some other TLA has actually bought some mass/volume/electric load/network access on each Starlink. It's such an obvious thing to do and it'd be so easy to hide.

And then you have the v2 Starlink coming which are much more massive (nearly 4x) than v1.

boardwaalk··on Welcome to the M1 Windows project
Sorry, I’m not specifically trying to be negative, these were just my honest first reactions. If they can do it, more power to ‘em.
boardwaalk··on Welcome to the M1 Windows project
I’d frankly be surprised if you were able to muster the talent/willpower for something like this.

1. Most of the people able to do this sort of thing probably work in Linux/FreeBSD/etc land. 2. You’re really working doubly against the tide here. You have proprietary stuff on the Mac and on the Windows side. 3. (Personal opinion) Dear God that sounds like a lot of work for something that is a fairly unfriendly experience on a few levels.

At least they have Linux/BSD people trailblazing here (they acknowledge as much).

If they can actually pull this off without changing something deeper than a what’s already exposed to kernel driver developers without horrible hacks or inefficiencies, I would be surprised.

Disclaimer: Not really a kernel dev of any sort.

boardwaalk··on Tcpls: Modern Transport Services with TCP and TLS
And it would be great if SCTP support was common across many platforms and supported over networks so we could have something (in ways) better than TCP or UDP.

Unfortunately it's over 20 years old and people just shove it in user space and use it over UDP (WebRTC).

Your sentiment is appreciated but it wouldn't be a way to get anything actually done :/.
