No one is suggesting anyone take the first image out of a model without any human-based filtering.

> I'm kind of disappointed that the EFF never issued a correction or retraction for this claim.

What kind of correction or retraction would you be looking for? That is explicitly Twitter policy[1].

Trump may have eventually crossed a line. That doesn't mean his line was in the same place as other people's.

I was half expecting this to have gyro controls so you could look like a madman while "arm looking".

Really neat, in any case.

boardwaalk··on A few tech startup CEOs in my country had started saying Elon's methods are fine
Yeah, I agree with this. Building an actually “wholesome”, “positive” and “opposite of divisive” social media would be an enormous good.

The problem is that no one has a good reason to believe it can be done because it has not yet been. At least with rockets and cars, the physics are there to back you up. You also have the problem of it being Elon, and… does anyone think he’d be the guy to choose to fix a social problem? Certainly I would not be and I am also on the spectrum. Then you have the evidence that, he’s fcking firing or burning all these Twitter employees, many of which likely did* want to make an legit good (defined by the above) social media service, regardless of whether they were “woke” or not (avoiding that charged language).

If I rewound a bit and he did get more sleep/get better advice & advisors/took things a little slower and tried to integrate with the company or at least communicate a coherent vision, I could see this having gone differently. It did not…

boardwaalk··on Ask HN: Would You Work for Elon?
Heck no.

I actually looked up to him before he started going downhill in the last few years. I thought, “Maybe I would work for SpaceX for a few year as long as I had a plan to get out.” I knew it would be hard but possibly rewarding enough. But after it seems like he sort of crystallized (at least publicly) on work culture (no WFH, people must be hardcore), frankly toxic personality (lashing out on Twitter, etc), and seemingly not knowing what the hell he is doing (incredibly naive views on running a social media platform and moderation, managing Twitter via fear and his own paranoia — firing people who disagree), I would not touch a job with him anywhere in chain or close to it.

I have to wonder if something happened to the guy or if he was always like this. Like, we’ve seen a few famous people go from themselves to essentially an evil caricature of themselves recently. Not that they weren’t somewhat objectionable (to me) before, but the objectionable bits got cranked up 100x. Trump, Kanye come to mind. Kanye obviously has some health issues. Is it mental health? Just getting older? Some sort of conservative/paranoia-fueled “mind virus”? That sounds silly, but there’s such a pattern and resemblance to “having your parents get stuck on conservative news” which is so common.

For what it's worth, you can do similar to "add -p" in VSC by using "Next Change" to scroll through a file in the diff view and adding hunks with individually with "Stage Selected Ranges".

It's a little slower than "add -p" but serviceable. Having editable diff in the diff view is really nice though.

boardwaalk··on Growing a home apothecary
An apothecary is a person -- or an establishment where such a person works -- not a garden. Odd use of the word.

Considering how early that decision was made in the timeline of electric vehicles (how early we still even are) — getting saddled with a backwards compatibility kludge kind of sucks.

RAID isn’t cool anymore. Maybe ZFS.
boardwaalk··on Playstation VR2
I respectfully disagree. I think VR is about in the same place experience-wise. PSVR has Beat Saber. And the social experiences (I'm assuming you mean VRChat and such) are... just fine, in my opinion? And I definitely have long-distance relationships where it makes sense. The novelty wears off quick and being isolated and with an uncomfortable headset on is a non-negligible cost vs video/voice/text.

(I have a recent headset and associated hardware, FWIW.)

Mmmhm. Go look in the docs for std::span and see how long it takes to find "The behavior is undefined if idx is out of range" or similar. For example: https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/container/span/operator_at

boardwaalk··on 4th leak reported on Nord Stream pipelines in Baltic Sea
Considering all the Russian energy execs dying mysteriously and Putin being a KGB guy, Putin pulling something like this to make the him the only option and making “the only way out is through” for this invasion… doesn’t seem impossible.

Maybe he thinks things will be okay if his new annexations come to a relative peace and have grudging acceptance from Europe like they did with Crimea. I doubt it, but…

Sure there is: Tiling window managers. Available for every desktop OS in some form or another. I assume people who are power users enough to have large, multiple monitors can help themselves.

What about "strategic" means not taking a reasonable route to the goal (keeping the price down?)

Is there some sort of "branding" for strategic reserve I haven't heard of? Wikipedia seems vague enough[1] to not be contrary to this strategy.

I think good engineers (critical thinkers + goal-oriented problem solvers) usually give up and find a better tool (i.e. without an blockchain) for the job after not too long.

There is similarly no shortage of “architecture astronauts,” and whether the greed fuels the use of the wrong tool or vice versa — it probably doesn’t matter in the end.

boardwaalk··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
It’s a little (a lot) frustrating that people are so sloppy with their thoughts (and by relation speech) on this subject.

It wouldn’t take that long for people to read up on what section 230 actually is before saying “publisher” like that means anything (is related to anything the law talks about).

Laws of course need interpretation, but if people think, “Oh, they’re a ‘publisher’” (whatever that means; they probably couldn’t tell you) “they must be subject to different rules,” they’re frankly just kind of dumb.

boardwaalk··on Meta’s metaverse hype leads to real-world backlash
I’d say they need to make a product people want. Look at Fortnite, Minecraft. The closest things to successful metaverses that exist. They’re both things that people actually want to use.

Who’s going to want use a blank slate platform from Facebook of all places?

(I think Carmack expressed part of this so credit goes there where appropriate.)

The belief that more rational beliefs are possible is not exactly debatable, is it? Certainly, the “woo” stuff you referenced is not the only alternative? That people have to believe in some “religion” and that common “religions” at the current point in history are at peak possible rationality… well, there’s no real reason to believe that, is there?
boardwaalk··on Not getting a new computer
Oh please don’t buy an Alienware. Those plastic monstrosities with non-standard (disposable/non-replaceable) components, bad cooling, etc.

By all means, buy a pre-built computer, but at least look around a bit.

You might want to tell SpaceX that, because that’s what they’ve been doing.

The satellites near a particular area (at any particular point in time) have a capacity as do the local ground station(s).

I can believe as a one-to-one comparison, cooling an office is more efficient. But people aren't turning off their home AC when they go into the office. If you figure that a majority of people won't even schedule their thermostat due to laziness, having other people at home, etc, and if even if they do, having their house cool down for their arrival home (5:30-6PM?) is still during a pretty hot time of day.

I would be pretty surprised if offset you could anywhere near the cooling of an entire office building considering all that.

I'm coming from the perspective of Texas where it's 100F effectively all day during the summer and I wouldn't move the thermostat from it's usual daytime setting of ~76F past maybe ~80F. Any more and it would take hours to cool back down.
