bmuk··on “The pressure of academia drove me to heroin”
I don't think there is simply one cause that makes some people able to handle pressure better than others, nor is this unique to academia. Life can be extremely challenging and stressful, but ultimately it's up to the individual to choose how to spend his time. If academia is so stressful you think you may end your life, it may be time to find another field.
bmuk··on Meet LKL: Turn Linux Kernel into a Library
You're absolutely correct; I'm not sure why I was thinking this would eliminate context switching. I don't have a filesystem written, just a lot of musing and reading about it. Wouldn't context switching be the bottleneck when you have lots of small files/transactions? What is usually the bottleneck with FUSE in your experience?

Ah okay, I think I understand more now. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Basically this is a kernel running in userspace, not hooking into the actual kernel running in kernel space?

bmuk··on Ask HN: How do you like your smartwatch?
I have a moto 360 (bought when they first came out), and I definitely feel strange when I don't have it on. The biggest feature for me is the ease of use while driving - the google maps integration keeps my eyes on the road, and the next turn is only a wrist flick away. I think the utility is less about specific features, though, and more about how connected to the internet you are when it becomes an extension of your body (not that phones weren't already).

Does this still incur the penalty of context switching from user space to kernel space? Filesystems are an interest of mine, and this would be a nice alternative to FUSE if it could mitigate the context-switching overhead.
bmuk··on Android Postmortem for UHack 2015
PSA: This is content from my personal blog if that wasn't apparent from the domain name.

I am particularly interested in help with the GCM issue - I'm not sure if the notifications aren't getting pushed because of an issue in the code, or because of some configuration issue in the developer console. I have verified that the developer console points to the correct IP address, so it is not that.

Thank you all, and I hope you enjoy reading my post. I would love any criticism you have on how to improve either the post or the app.

bmuk··on Defending GCC considered futile
I tend to agree with RMS, at least on his philosophy of free software. That being said, I don't think adding LLDB support to emacs is a bad thing, and I don't think the rise of clang/LLVM will be a big hit to free software.

As long as there are people who care about freedom, people will maintain GCC. Even if the worst case happens, and there is extreme fragmentation of proprietary patch-sets to LLVM, we can always still use GCC, or even still use the free parts of LLVM/clang.

While there is some issue with fragmentation of the developer community, I see this as a non-issue. These things generally work themselves out through the natural ebb and flow of chaotic systems (just like the economy is largely self-regulating).

We can always still use GCC. I don't really see where the issue is, am I missing something?
