bmoxb··on From a lorry driver to Ruby on rails developer at 38
> there’s a massive shortage of freight drivers since Brexit for no apparent reason whatsoever.

The main reason is that most drivers were Eastern European and since freedom of movement ended it has become significantly harder for them to come and work as freely as they could before. Covid is also a factor afaik.

Though I otherwise agree with you that developers (or rather white collar careers in general with the exception of certain finance roles) are not particularly well paid in many instances in the UK.

bmoxb··on 3rd Edition of Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ by Stroustrup
They are, if I'm understanding correctly, referring to what may be considered the 'traditional' OOP style (Animal, which has various properties and behaviours, is extended by Dog, which has its own properties and behaviours, maybe overriding those of Animal) vs a style where inheritance is use primarily to define and implement interfaces (i.e., an expected set of behaviours with no implementation included in the base class). In other words, the different ways a language supporting OOP may be used rather than what the language supports in and of itself.
bmoxb··on Go Enums Suck
That actually sounds like an ok idea imo - some more quality of life features but with the small executables and fancy runtime of Go would be pretty nice.
bmoxb··on Go Enums Suck
They also tend to require proper pattern matching to be particularly useful, something which I can't see being added given Go's design philosophy.
bmoxb··on Japan's Nikkei surpasses 1989 all-time high
I wouldn't go that far. Sure, it's not as cheap as it used to be, but the average Japanese person can certainly afford to shop there.
bmoxb··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
You're speaking as if LLMs are some naturally occurring phenomena that people are Google have tampered with. There's obviously always human intervention as AI systems are built by humans.
bmoxb··on Thoughts on tech employment
And the answer being "the limited number of local companies paying high wages and the limited number of American companies willing to hire someone in Eastern Europe reducing my leverage."
bmoxb··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
6,000,000 / 24 = 250,000

Seems like enough to me.

bmoxb··on Why are America's suburbs failing?
Could you elaborate? I don't see the connection.
bmoxb··on Write code for the web
To my knowledge, the fee is for the dev kit rather than the ability to publish on the app store. If it the aim was to prevent junk from being published, then surely the fee should apply at the point of submitting an app for review.
bmoxb··on Plastic bag bans work
Most people I know tend to go about their business with some sort of bag on them.
bmoxb··on Microsoft seeks Rust developers to rewrite core C# code
Yes, that's the issue.
bmoxb··on Edsger Dijkstra carried computer science on his shoulders (2020)
The improvement of AI lately doesn't invalidate his point though. I'm sure submarine technology has similarly improved but it's still irrelevant whether or not a submarine can be said to 'swim' not.
bmoxb··on Teaching D from Scratch: Is it a viable first language? (2021)
Why would execution speed be particularly relevant? Python is slow but that hasn't stopped many useful applications from being written it, plus proper use of libraries written in C (e.g., numpy) again mitigates the issue.

From a learning perspective, a slower language could actually be beneficial in the sense that it's impractical to brute force a solution to a problem in a way that you can get away with in C or similar.

bmoxb··on Apple to Developers: Heads I win, tails you lose (part 2)
I'm not advocating in either direction, but I'm curious what elements of iOS's UX you prefer over Android's?
bmoxb··on British Post Office Scandal
I would say that's more 'realistic' than 'cynical'. The current government is incredibly unpopular so it's no suprise that they'd latch on to something that will be universally seen in a positive light when resolved.
bmoxb··on Missing the Point of WebAssembly
Learning new languages may be component of it, but I think more generally, different languages are suitable for different problems and different developers. Being free to use the most suitable or preferred tool for a task is undoubtedly desirable, rather than having JavaScript as the only option.

And, while more of a personal opinion, JavaScript is not a well designed language - permanently shackling the web to it prevents progress forward.

bmoxb··on IRS to begin trial of its own free tax-filing system
That is how it works in many (most?) countries already - the US is an outlier in requiring every citizen to handle their own taxes.
bmoxb··on Google Imagen 2
I've seen this claim thrown around a few times but haven't really seen any evidence that it's true, beyond a few unconvincing anecdotes.
bmoxb··on Europe's geography 'kind of reshaped' as Paris-Berlin night train returns
What's 'bullshit' about trains?
bmoxb··on Eurostar Amsterdam to London trains cancelled for six months
Very unfair generalisation.
bmoxb··on Netflix engineer on solving their "Black Mirror S1.E1 Pig f–-er" problem [video]
I would argue that it could be off-putting (it's probably one of the harder episodes to watch) but I don't see how it's not representative of the rest of the show.
bmoxb··on An ex-Googler's guide to dev tools (2020)
Interesting, I didn't find it that impressive when I tried it a couple months ago and fairly quickly went back to regular old-fashioned autocomplete. What language(s) were you working with out of curiosity?
bmoxb··on Bjarne Stroustrup Quotes
I haven't used C# enough to comment on the language itself, but I do know it was designed (at least initially) by Anders Hejlsberg who is very experienced in language design.
bmoxb··on The new Paris métro
As a foreign tourist from presumably from NA or Western Europe, then it will seem pretty affordable compared to your home country. Relative to Japanese cost of living and average income however, certain lines and services can be pretty expensive (particularly the shinkansen and certain JR services).
bmoxb··on Investigation: 78% of carbon offset projects globally are “likely junk“
> I imagine if they tried it here, people would just let loose on the floor if they were out of change.

They do here (Europe) too.

bmoxb··on Why doctors hate their computers (2018)
It seems from my naive perspective that Google and/or Microsoft could modify their existing workspace products quite easily to make then suitable for use in hospitals, no?
bmoxb··on The Overflowing Brain: Information overload and the limits of working memory
I wouldn't say it's true in general. You can certainly choose what to put active effort into learning/revising, but memorisation isn't really something we have direct, conscious control over.
bmoxb··on Kokuhaku: Japan’s Love Confessing Culture (2013)
Based on my (somewhat limited) experience, most people are familiar with the phrase but wouldn't use it in any serious context.
bmoxb··on Valve is not willing to publish games with AI generated content anymore?
That may be true but that won't stop people from trying to sue undoubtedly - clearly they've decided the effort and legal fees required to deal with that aren't worth it.
