bmh100··on Amazon employees push CEO Andy Jassy to drop return-to-office mandate
Meta has committed to embracing remote. They are even shutting down some office buildings. Too many employees don't even live near an office.

bmh100··on AI models that predict disease are not as accurate as reports might suggest
The issue with data leakage can be handled through k-fold cross-validation, in which all of the data takes turns as either training data or test data.
bmh100··on Competitive Programming with AlphaCode
On the other hand, as the value of an hour of programming increases, the quantity demanded may also increase.
bmh100··on Competitive Programming with AlphaCode
Not necessarily. Demand may be much higher than available supply right now. Tech companies will continue to compete, requiring spending on developers to remain competitive. Software is unlike manufacturing, in that the output is a service, not a widget. Worker productivity in general has not decreased the demand for full work weeks, despite projections in the early 20th century to the contrary. Of course, it is possible that fewer developers would be needed, but I don't think it's likely, yet.

Consider the manager of a fast-food restaurant.
bmh100··on No Place to Hide – U.K. campaign against end-to-encryption encryption
A third way would be to use a neural network to analyze a message before encryption, or to duplicate the message for receipt by the service provider.
bmh100··on A delightful quirk of relativity theory
In science, when testing the existence of something, the burden of proof is generally on the one hypothesizing the existence. The existence is generally accepted if experiments fail to reject the hypothesis.
bmh100··on Dear sir, you have built a compiler
The nerve and brain concept sounds fascinating, but I don't have enough background in sensors to quite grasp what you mean. Could you please provide a specific example?
bmh100··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
The entire subgenre of military scifi or military space opera is full of stories that would translate well into a visual medium, with plenty of action. I've read many but haven't seen any adapted yet.
bmh100··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
They are written in a childish manner: the white knight, the highly assertive love interest, the sociopath who wishes he could be a good guy, and the cowboy. Their personalities are unrealistic in ways that I would attribute to a young teenager. That said, the quirks of these trope-like characters is sometimes amusing. I enjoy the series mainly for the protomolecule plot, despite the characters.

The quote from John Wheeler is, “Matter tells Spacetime how to curve, and Spacetime tells matter how to move.”

bmh100··on Psychonetics: A nerd's toolset to work with mind and perception
No one owns any religion, not even the Pope or the Dalai Lama. There is no "territory" to "colonize", and I haven't seen any evidence of racial superiority being a motivation. People develop their own belief systems over time. Did Gautama Buddha erase traditional Hindu voices when he spread his new religion in India? Was Gautama Buddha motivated by a feeling that his Nepal race was superior to the Hindu Indo-Aryans? Did Gautama Buddha seek to "colonize" the Indian subcontinent somehow?
bmh100··on Single cortical neurons as deep artificial neural networks
9.2 million parameters per neuron. There an estimated 86 billion neurons in the human brain [0] and 19 billion in the neocortex [1]. That means that, for this strategy to emulate a human brain or neocortex would require 791 quadrillion parameters or 175 quadrillion parameters, respectively. The largest ANN built so far, GPT-3, has 175 billion parameters [2]. We are 6 orders of magnitude from being able to pull it off.

The aliens specifically wanted Earth because of its life. A nuclear war would damage the planet's ecosystem too much.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know of a good, self-hosted URL shortener?

bmh100··on Six Figures in 6 days
Some do, yes. I think this is especially true for independent content creators, as one example.
bmh100··on Six Figures in 6 days
I have to disagree that a major component of success in business is luck, generally speaking. A successful business relies on having repeatable processes that generate profit. If one wants to talk about becoming a billionaire or growing a social media company to the level of IPO, then I concede that an above-average degree of luck is involved.
bmh100··on Six Figures in 6 days
The problem is that the article does not describe a repeatable process. Maybe the author's experience is repeatable, but that is not part of the content. The most critical component was the marketing, i.e. "going viral" on Twitter. Some marketing firms specialize in doing so and seem to have skill, yet I see no indication of where the author intentionally took steps to achieve that effect. Therefore, yes, it does seem like the author "got lucky".
bmh100··on Google/Fitbit will monetise health data and harm consumers
Does anyone have recommendations for a privacy-conscious alternative to the Aria scale and mobile app?
bmh100··on Do things that don't require scale
Based on the article, I believe the author would say that Square is an idea that requires scale, since you "lost money on literally every transaction, but as the number of transactions increased..."

I might be misunderstanding something, but it seems that Square becoming profitable required reaching a certain scale.
