This article comes off as being written by someone who, while incredibly credentialed, just seems like an outsider. It seems like an article my parents would write and they dont necessarily have a great grasp on the way business is evolving.
I'd much rather read certain blogs than the stuff coming out of hbs these days. Its odd but they're missing developments almost as badly as traditional media.
Note this semi-rant is directed on the whole at hbs' working knowledge site and only a little bit at this specific article.
The ideal setup seems to be a designer with a bit of marketing skill and business acumen (doesn't have to be huge amount) and a coder.
These two can leave each other alone to work when it matters but they also have the crossover skills to help each other work through a problem.
A good designer on the web is going to know a little bit about coding and a good coder is going to know a little about design.
Its a nice mix and you dont run into any bike shed problems where you have 4 different people checking out the same code.
2.) Read http://www.thenameinspector.com from beginning to end
3.) Come up with words that describe your ideas then use thesaurus.com
4.) Look to chop words down by syllables and then combine. ie. a personal bookmarking service or online profile service that was described as "my highlights" would become mylights.com.
Also you really need to limit the voting by ip address, what prevents me from adding an affiliate link and then creating accounts with my 50 different email addresses and boosting that card to the top all for my personal gain...
After that if the site is to work you need to make sure you keep it really pure and unbiased. Don't allow users to submit affiliate links, put strict controls on user ratings and don't allow small groups to drastically affect the site. Inherently the site sets itself up to be abused by marketers but if you can put strict enough controls in place to keep it relatively unbiased you have the potential to create a decent resource.
