blweiner··on Octane: React's programming model compiled without a virtual DOM
Octane is a new UI framework from Inferno creator Dominic Gannaway (and successor to his Inferno).

It compiles React-style components, Hooks, Suspense, and Actions into direct DOM updates. There is no virtual DOM. Looks like also no manual dependency arrays.

Octane supports JSX, TSX, TSRX, React integration, and several popular libraries.

It's open source and currently in alpha, repo here: https://github.com/octanejs/octane

blweiner··on Show HN: Mimestream, a native macOS email client for Gmail
Just downloaded it and it looks very nice. One of my favorite features of Gmail is multiples inboxes which I use for a GTD-like set up with "To Do"/"To Read"/"Waiting For" etc. Any plans to add support for that?

blweiner··on In Switzerland, it's now illegal to boil a live lobster
I've been struggling with this recently as well. I don't need to kill animals in order to survive and so doing so is just for my pleasure. It's surprisingly easy to put this out of your mind when you're sitting down to a nice dinner, but I do doubt that I'd be able to kill animals if I needed to do it with my own hands. Yet I and most others decide all the time that ending the life of another animal can be justified by the pleasure we'll receive from it when we choose to eat meat. So yeah, I'm also having trouble coming to terms with caring enough to reduce some suffering but still being OK with taking a life.
blweiner··on My new favorite book of all time
I appreciated Sapiens because while it also examines similar measures for how our lives are "improving," it also stops to ask how we decide what those measures should be. Progress is subjective.
