There're people with professions that I wouldn't have imagined. I'm 50+, thought I had seen it all.

My questions are: why did they turn their back to it and why did it gain traction worldwide?

Unfortunately, I've never seen a version of this data targeting modern C++ (>=11, with smart pointers, already 15 years old).
