blueline··on How we built a $1M ARR SaaS startup
the linked blog post for that gave me some serious raised eyebrows

> Within the first week, we had over 100 applicants for our content manager position. We easily passed on 90% of applications that:

>Opened with something like: “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Sir/Madam”

am i taking crazy pills? why would you pass on someone just for that?

blueline··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
>If you are low income worker in California, every homeowner with a 401k is Richie rich.

how many low income workers do you actually know and talk to in california?

blueline··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
> Wanting to see the economy fail to punish rich people and corporations.

does anyone really believe that a failing economy will hurt rich people and corporations more relative to... literally anyone else? i would expect the exact opposite, e.g. https://pomp.substack.com/p/the-k-shaped-recovery-is-now-und...

blueline··on CDC declares a federal moratorium on evictions [pdf]
how is this remotely relevant to the eviction moratorium?
blueline··on SoftBank unmasked as ‘Nasdaq whale’ that stoked tech rally
they used to own 100B of alibaba

i have to assume bytedance has/will work out favorably for them.. maybe im wrong there

blueline··on David Graeber has died
for anyone interested in some history between the author of the first link and graeber, in his own words: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17164707
blueline··on Asana S-1
you criticize society yet you participate in society! how curious!
blueline··on Sweatpants Forever: How the Fashion Industry Collapsed
Depends what you’re looking for, but there are some pretty good boutique shops like notre and gallery aesthete. those cater to pretty particular styles though.
blueline··on Let's build a full-text search engine
how do you populate/maintain the synonym/stemming database? is this something that “standard” datasets exist for? asking because this problem will fall on my plate at work sometimes in the next few months :-)
blueline··on A new and improved Twitter API
unfortunately not, but luckily with this new api it shouldn't matter for too much longer :-)
blueline··on A new and improved Twitter API
> This makes it impossible to build tools that, say, allow you to visualize a tweet thread

it is possible -- it unfortunately happens to be part of my job description to do so

one of the sibling comments basically has it right. you can build it from the bottom up (where "bottom" is the deepest tweet in the thread you know about, one way or another).

let me tell you though, i am _very_ excited for this new API, because there is some absolutely horrible code i will be able to delete as a result of it

blueline··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
yep. this and the change to the file browsing, where the lines that delineated files/folders are now gone, causing me accidental misclicks of the wrong file, are two very glaring annoyances. everything else i feel neutral on
blueline··on Nanoplastics accumulate in land-plant tissues: study
taxes aren't a silver bullet. if the affected companies were to just pass the extra cost to consumers (why wouldn't they?), then you effectively have implemented a regressive tax that affects the poorest consumers the most.

clearly there's more to it than that, but assuming that the market can address any negative externalities just with taxes is pretty naive IMO

blueline··on The business of tear gas
you think that police misuse of force is due to a lack of better alternatives?
blueline··on The Atlantic lays off almost 20% of staff
your claim is that the atlantic is failing _specifically_ because they post too much anti-trump content?

it would be pretty easy to disprove this to yourself by observing that magazine/newspaper sales have been in decline since before trump was a presidential candidate.

blueline··on Neiman Marcus files for bankruptcy
that's... a sweeping statement without much evidence beyond your personal experience.

do you really think that people buying Saint Laurent jeans last year are now worried about "fast optical networks, clean drinking water, and a reliable car"?

blueline··on Bye, Amazon
i'm going to leave all the minutiae of this response aside, because i don't want to get lost in the weeds.

the REALLY important part that you're missing is that the gestapo were an _arm of the state_. some blue checkmarks on twitter cancelling people can _never_ compare to a literal secret police force run by the government.

the scale of effect is just comically different. even if i suspend my disbelief that outrage about false rape accusations and people being harassed for their opinions are 100% true exactly as stated, how in the everloving shit is that comparable to a secret police force that orchestrated the systematic torture/murder of MILLIONS of people?

it's just not even close. use a better analogy.

blueline··on Bye, Amazon
literally in the article, in his own words:

>At the end of the day, the big problem isn’t the specifics of Covid-19 response,” ... “It’s that Amazon treats the humans in the warehouses as fungible units of pick-and-pack potential. Only that’s not just Amazon, it’s how 21st-century capitalism is done.

how is it "hilarious" to take this sentiment as anti-capitalist? how could this be interpreted another way?

blueline··on Bye, Amazon
having money means you aren't allowed to critique capitalism? what kind of logic is that?
blueline··on Bye, Amazon
> Based on my observations, SJWs are the modern day gestapo

really? are you sure? "SJWs" are comparable to the state-sponsored secret police of nazi germany, which had unilateral power to imprison (physically imprison, you know, in a real jail where they would be tortured. not on twitter) anyone without justification, and who were instrumental in the genocide of millions of people?

do you mind justifying that claim in any way whatsoever?

blueline··on Facebook Reports First Quarter 2020 Results
this is an extremely stressful and worrisome time for many people. many are also dealing with loss from death of loved ones due to the virus.

it's great that you are apparently able to use this extra time positively.

but for many, right now is basically as close as can be to hell. i don't blame anyone for turning to some mindless entertainment.

blueline··on U.S. Economy Shrinks at 4.8% Pace, Signaling Start of Recession
why should anyone try to "contradict" what amounts to you posting anecdotes about people being mean to you on twitter?
blueline··on SoftBank expects $24B in losses from Vision Fund, WeWork and OneWeb
the vision fund is like $100 billion right? you don't think that's enough resources to bring about some big change? why are only 4 tech companies capable?
blueline··on You're a Slave to Money, Then You Die
its hilarious that comments to this effect have been posted multiple times, when the actual content of the article specifically quotes/supports ideas by people like Terry Eagleton, a marxist (/religious) thinker who specifically oppose postmodernism
blueline··on Additional 6.6M File for Initial Unemployment Benefits [pdf]
>$25K - one can survive a month or two on that

US median yearly household income is about $61k

blueline··on Additional 6.6M File for Initial Unemployment Benefits [pdf]
the median household income in NYC is $57000. there is a huge amount of people in NYC who make up what you're calling the "underclass".
blueline··on San Francisco bans public events holding more than 1,000 people
>To be fair, after being the first team in the NBA to be eliminated from playoff contention last night, they probably weren't going to draw very large crowds anyway.

it would be shocking if several thousand people at the least weren't going to show up. the warriors are insanely popular even during this down period.

you ever catch a knicks game on TV? they've been terrible for like an entire decade and there are definitely plenty of people in the seats...

blueline··on GitHub CLI is now in beta

blueline··on How housing became the world’s biggest asset class
>You always need to pay for like 40% of the house to start a mortgage anyway

in the united states, literally the exact opposite is true. you can get a mortgage with almost nothing as a down payment. By agreeing to take on PMI, private mortgage insurance, you can get federal loans with something like a 3-3.5% down payment
