Personally I don't have much interest in using models that blatantly censor historical facts.
Tiananmen Square is an obvious one but I would be concerned that any model that censors that would also have other hidden censorship or more subtle biases I wouldn't catch
It's absolutely become worse since the 80s
I get a lot of shit from my fellow countrymen when I say it. Rose colored glasses, etc
But nah. It's way harder to be successful here than it was even 20 years ago
Right now I'm just at a loss. I've never wanted to be anything other than a programmer before.
A promotion is only a good thing if you actually benefit from it
The correct response to "I feel I have been promoted (without a corresponding title or pay change)" is to be pissed off, not excited
I guess just blow my brains out? Just.. Thanks for trying man, but you picked the wrong thing to specialize in, now you're completely redundant and worthless to society. Here's your cyanide pill?
God damn I'm so bitter about all of this. I was doing so well for a bit now I feel like I've completely wasted my life.
I get wanting some kind of verification but hell no I'm not giving you a photo of my ID.
Let me make a new account then. But they won't.
And hey, I'm unemployed at the moment. I'm a zero income earner. And yet, I'm still here.
What disposable income? When I was younger I had none, I was too busy paying rent and tuition,
They took jobs that Americans would have wanted higher pay to do, higher benefits, higher safety standards...
Intelligent or "smarts" is not measured by how successful you are or how much money you make.
Also great for your friend, but no one would hire him to do that if machines could do it for them
> When was this ever NOT the case? Without inherited generational wealth you're at the mercy of the capital/asset owning class to make a living.
What are you talking about? The capital class always relied on the professional class just as much. A wealthy person who owns a machine shop relies on machinists to make money. :/
But you're right. The better indication of capability is debugging skill than writing skill.
When I ask people about things like this, I hear a lot of "If I don't build it, someone else will"
My goal isn't just to refuse to build this stuff, it is actively to resist the people who are.
I don't have much influence though
Hard for me to imagine. You feel no pride in using a tool to accomplish a goal?
> Code has no such personality. I don't tie my identity or ego to code the same way I would an essay
Code certainly does have a personality. When working with teams for a while you can absolutely get a sense for which person wrote what code in a codebase, just by subtle little tells.
You may not tie your identity or ego to it, bully for you, but for me I take a lot of pride in writing clear and maintainable code that contributes to big projects in meaningful ways.
Maybe the problem with software is there's too many people who treat writing code as a mere means to an end, instead of a very important part of the process.
Yes there is
I'm saying there shouldn't be. It's exploitative.
The narrative we're seeing around AI and current automation isn't "we're going to automate one category of jobs". If it were then sure, we could be relatively confident that the excess labor from that industry would be absorbed by other segments
But that's not what the future looks like to me. The future to me looks like "we want to automate a large majority of labor"
So what then? If tons of labour is displaced then the Broken Window Fallacy doesn't really apply, because it is based on the assumption that there will always be something for displaced labour to do.
Call it the Excess Labor Corollary. If there's no way to absorb excess labor in other segments, then what.
Society is definitely worse off when people who exchange their labor for capital have no opportunities to do so
An artist (even a mediocre one) almost certainly would do this step for you
Get real
