blowski··on UK General Election called for July 4th
It's not a national holiday in the UK.
blowski··on UK General Election called for July 4th
The existing Conservative government are a shambles at the moment, with a whole series of defections and by-elections. The longer the stay in power, the more it damages their brand. They're expecting to lose this election, and bounce back in the next.

Also, old people are the Conservative government's key constituency. Old people vote more in the warmer, dryer summer months, than if the government waits until winter.

blowski··on 'Satoshi' impersonation 'a serious abuse of court's process' judge concludes
It makes a fascinating conspiracy theory to pretend he's right about all the "bad actors" tampering with his files. All nonsense of course, but makes a good yarn.
blowski··on Taking Risk
A few personal anecdotes aren't very convincing arguments about the future direction of the world economy.
blowski··on OpenAI pulls Johansson soundalike Sky’s voice from ChatGPT
I'm in a similar position to you, but from singler friends, I've heard two reasons. Firstly, all the other single people are on the apps. Secondly, some are concerned about being seen as a creep when flirting or approaching the "normal" way. Thus, online dating is the new normal, and the old-fashioned talking in person is less common.

I suppose it depends on your own perspective. For my part, a world in which people "date" algorithms instead of other human beings certainly seems pretty dystopian.
blowski··on Fact checking of claims about nuclear power projects
Also, there are fuzzy lines between opinions, consensus, and facts. What may be considered a fact amongst one group will be described as a wrong opinion by another. Chances are, the LLMs will try to work out what group you are in, and present accordingly, without seeking any real truth.
blowski··on Why the CORDIC algorithm lives rent-free in my head
“Lives rent-free in my head” is a horrible cliche. By now, it has the same effect as saying “it’s nice” but uses lots more letters.
blowski··on Google Cloud accidentally deletes customer's account
I wonder what their GCP spend was.
blowski··on Google Cloud accidentally deletes customer's account
As always, there’s a trade off. By using native backups, it’s typically cheaper and easier, with external backups having their own risks. The risk of the cloud provider making a stupid mistake is so small that there are usually many other risks that are worth mitigating first.
blowski··on Show HN: Browser-based knitting (pattern) software
I’d love this for crochet.
blowski··on OpenAI: Model Spec
> OpenAI have several times being argue that they are the only ones to be responsible enough to develop powerful AI, and that others should not be allowed to play

Can you give examples of where they’ve said that?

blowski··on Hyperworlds – Web Replacement Projects
Seems to me you're making sure you don't forget them by outsourcing the "remembering" to a more reliable system.
blowski··on Road resurfacing during the daytime without stopping traffic [video]
I had an eccentric Maths teacher at school who used to stare out of the window and make odd claims. One was that he was running a roadworks business using telekinetic powers, and all the people in hi-vis jackets were merely scarecrows.
blowski··on TypeSpec: A new language for API-centric development
The backend has definitely suffered from "crazy hype-driven development" for the last 30 years. Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, PHP, Scala, Clojure, Go, Rust have all had their brief moment as the silver bullet. Not to mention ops tooling - Vagrant, Docker, Kubernetes, Puppet, Chef, Ansible.

I wasn't alive in the 1970s, but I'm guessing that those who were would say it was just as faddish then as well.

blowski··on What can LLMs never do?
It’s a common style guide in newspapers.
blowski··on TIS-100: Tessellated Intelligence System
I had never heard of Zachtronics, and I've been on Hacker News since 2012.
blowski··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Oh we’re at that point of the hype cycle are we?
blowski··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
I've just turned it off, and I still can't spread Safari over two displays. I'm on Sonoma, on an M3 Max, albeit using a third-party monitor.
blowski··on No Abstractions: our API design principle
This reminds me of the Kubernetes API.
blowski··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
Perhaps it would be silly for you to adopt it because you have a skillset that doesn't need it, but it can still be a sensible solution for others.
blowski··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
I've been building websites for 25 years, but I'm not very good at building maintainable CSS. From memory, I've used Bootstrap, Zurb, SMACSS, YUI CSS, YAML (the CSS framwework), OOCSS, plus various ThemeForest templates.

Perhaps it's not a problem for you, or perhaps you don't like the solution. But Tailwind is hands down my favourite solution to that problem.

If you think there's something better, you need to start from a place that actually solves my problem better. I'm all ears.

blowski··on Tesla's in Its Flop Era
Sorry for taking that wrong. The fanboy logic can be so ridiculous at times that it's really hard to tell.
blowski··on Tesla's in Its Flop Era
I honestly struggle to tell these days.
blowski··on Tesla's in Its Flop Era
> Do you really think Elon would just surround himself with yes men that implement stupid ideas just because he thinks it "looks cool"?

Yes, I suspect a lot of us do think exactly that.

blowski··on Understanding and avoiding visually ambiguous characters in IDs
Reminds me of https://www.reddit.com/r/keming/
blowski··on Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, a.k.a. "Masonry" layout
Is it easier to build a layout with CSS compared to 20 years ago? Yes. Can we further improve CSS? Yes.
blowski··on Petoi Bittle – a programmable robot dog
Similar to how software engineers get paid $1000s just to keep hitting the keyboard.
blowski··on A Sketch of the Biggest Idea in Software Architecture (2022)
True, which is perhaps why it's unclear what the difference is between a "skinny waist" and hexagonal architecture, "ports and adapters".
blowski··on Ask HN: Outstanding Programmers
I agree with the general ethos - good code doesn't get written by attending meetings all day, or fiddling with org mode. But like all advice, it needs caveats. If you're on a brownfield project where you have very little knowledge of the domain or legacy code, just jumping straight in and spending lots of time in your editor is probably going to result in a lot of frustration and wasted effort.
