blovescoffee··on LLaVA-O1: Let Vision Language Models Reason Step-by-Step
You’re going to PSA an opinion?
blovescoffee··on PhD student finds lost city in Mexico jungle
Their actions were still unique in many ways. And the Spanish’s action were an order of magnitude more consequential. The Aztecs warred and pillage other groups but were not in the business of wiping centuries of knowledge off the face of the earth nor did they ever manage or desire to kill 90% of all peoples of central Mexico.
blovescoffee··on Next.js 15 and Turbopack Dev (Stable)
Next js gets so much hate on HN. In my experience, it's been great. It's kind of like Apple in that, if you buy into the ecosystem, you unlock great benefits. Fwiw we're running on cloudflare at my work and it's been one of the most enjoyable DX I've had in a long time. RTFM and you'll be fine. Listen to conference talks and you'll understand why some of the 'weird' decisions were made - they might not even seem so weird anymore.
blovescoffee··on Next.js 15 and Turbopack Dev (Stable)
We have some marketing sites that are static and Next on cloudflare is working perfectly for us at a large company. Fair enough if you don't like it. It is the most popular framework (or top 3) and hasn't scared off its user-base in spite of the issues you listed. Maybe those aren't the primary concerns (or dealbreakers) of most projects?
blovescoffee··on The Naming of America (2023)
What free stuff do Jewish Americans, Italian Americans, Asian Americans, get?
blovescoffee··on Web components are okay
First "Web guys" is such a demeaning way about talking about real and serious engineers solving real and serious engineering problems. If you don't think frontend engineering solves serious problems, I don't think your opinions about it are serious.

All real world programs are stateful. You need some tooling and/or conventions to handle that in a clean way. I recommend this blog post about React Query that talks about some challenges and solutions on the frontend for state management: https://ui.dev/why-react-query

You're questioning the importance of optimization on a website for hackers/tinkerers/engineers?

You need optimization for page speed, SEO, animation, elegance, pushing the boundaries...

edit to address: "Which optimization does that need?"

Optimistic updates, debouncing, handling large responses, cache, etc. etc.

blovescoffee··on Web components are okay
How does your library deal with state management and data flow? What primitives does your library offer for optimization?
blovescoffee··on Show HN: Mitata – Benchmarking tooling for JavaScript
There’s a lot of server side js. Mostly plumbing code but there’s certainly “headless” js
blovescoffee··on Sanding UI
mcmaster is the most polished ui/ux you know? To each their own but this is a very hackernews comment - it's very much a site for engineers but I can't agree it's a polished UI or UX.

To me: Sense of hierarchy is off, accessibility is meh, there's an enormity of information per page, there's poor use of color and spacing... it could be worse but I can imagine this site giving my designer friends a seizure.

blovescoffee··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
... Or they just honestly have a different experience than you
blovescoffee··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
I did only briefly look at the proposal. What did you find so ugly?
blovescoffee··on Diffusion Forcing: Next-Token Prediction Meets Full-Sequence Diffusion
Am I missing something about training time? Does adding per token noise cause training to slow significantly? Cool paper though!
blovescoffee··on OpenAI's Long-Term AI Risk Team Has Disbanded
What could DARPA/Washington do and why would “they” know what goes on behind the scenes at OpenAI?
blovescoffee··on N-Dimensional Gaussians for Fitting of High Dimensional Functions
If you understand what a Gaussian Process is, you understand what a Gaussian Distribution is. This work estimates the parameters of many Gaussian Distribution in order to fit the approximate geometry of a GD to a geometry in a scene.
blovescoffee··on N-Dimensional Gaussians for Fitting of High Dimensional Functions
The point of a Nerf is effectively overfitting a neural network to a scene anyways (I think they say this in the original NeRF paper - or somewhere similar).
blovescoffee··on Vercel completes $250M Series E round at $3.25B valuation
Yes. At a minimum it’s very easy to imagine contracts on the order of 10k per month and 100k per month. If you read about enterprise sales those numbers are normal.

In my opinion their huge valuation is wack but the parent comment wasted their time doing math based on $20/month services - not even including all the add-ons they have in the “hobby”/small project tier.

blovescoffee··on Merging Remix and React Router
Agreed. We're evaluating remix at work to use on a rewrite project and this seems like it will make it harder to adopt - and harder to cast as an alternative to next.js
blovescoffee··on Leaked deck reveals how OpenAI is pitching publisher partnerships
deque?
blovescoffee··on Mexico's Floating Gardens
If you go off the beaten path in Xochimilco you need to be super careful. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you know what you’re doing.
blovescoffee··on Level of Gaussians: Real-Time View Synthesis for Millions of Square Meters
Crazy good results but without the paper (which the link at the time just goes back to the site) it's a bit difficult to check how good. What data is required, how long are training runs/how many steps?
blovescoffee··on Is the Remote Work Future?
Maybe larger companies are calling back remote workers but many small-medium companies still offer remote for a variety of reasons (competition, savings, etc). I just accepted an offer at a 500ish person company working fully remote.
blovescoffee··on Oracle's Jump to Nashville Surprises Austin
Yeah that's definitely why they moved /s
blovescoffee··on Length and thickness of bamboo internodes: a beautiful curve
Following negative exponential growth towards the top makes some sense. You want to have more weight towards the bottom/middle for balance. Interesting that the bulk is in the middle of the stalk.

edit: Maybe I misunderstood? I'm a bit confused on width/length here.

blovescoffee··on Proposal to Add Signals to JavaScript
I prefer keeping the javascript surface area minimal. I can definitely see this as a footgun that newer programmers will use to mess up JS codebases with spaghetti of weird effects linked together
blovescoffee··on The return of never-ending job interviews: 'It can go beyond the pale'
I’m sure agile development also discourages reposting a job and making the employee re apply.
blovescoffee··on Vercel: Improved Infrastructure Pricing
Vercels hosting is ok. I prefer cloudflare and AWS but vercel is still best for next.js first class support. Especially on newest versions. For instance, server functions currently don’t work on cloudflares nextjs hosting. There’s some discussion about it on discord and GitHub. However, once something becomes the new fad and takes over from nextjs, I’m not sure what vercel will do.

Also checking the vercel page, they have so many investors, how do they all expect a company predicated on a JavaScript framework to be around in 10 years.

blovescoffee··on Nvidia Is Simulating a Copy of the Earth
I see this pretty often here unfortunately. Very confidently wrong statements from people who aren’t actual experts. For historical reasons there’s a sort of guise of expert on HN that can be abused.
blovescoffee··on Notes on El Salvador
Honest question, what do you mean be “if you’re in the area?” Like near San Salvador or in Latam? Or what area
blovescoffee··on The many flavors of edible ants
what does this even mean, the globalists? anyways more ants for me!
blovescoffee··on The many flavors of edible ants
Chicatana ants are so incredible. They're a seasonal delicacy in Mexico and have a great nutty, proteiny, chocolately flavor.
