> ...or abandoning all hope.

"Abandoning" all hope implies a choice. I never chose to have every last shred of hope and optimism I had forcibly ripped from me and stomped into the dirt by these scumbags we call "leaders" (and their idiot cultists). When will humanity learn that the types of people who become billionaires and trillionaires literally want us all dead? At this point they appear to also want themselves dead too, but it's all gonna be okay in the end, because one of them gets to die last with all the money, thereby "winning" the game.

blooalien··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
> Fred Rogers often told this story about ...

If he were still alive, I'd vote Fred Rogers for Emperor of Earth all day long. One of the rare few humans who I'd truly label a genuinely good person. Not a hateful or greedy bone in that man's body as far as I've ever read, seen, or heard about him. I suspect the same of Jim Henson, too. Probably Carl Sagan as well. Maybe also Neil deGrasse Tyson for a more modern (still alive) example of a "good person" (as far as I can tell)? I believe "good people" still exist, but they're sadly not in positions of "power" (and probably wouldn't want to be). A shame, because the ones we've got in charge of things right now won't be happy until the planet is literally on fire from pole to pole and one of them has all the everything all to themselves...

blooalien··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
> What's a "good person" exactly?

I was taught that a "good person" tries to actually care about their fellow humans and other lifeforms on this planet enough to try to live a life that contributes toward a positive future that we'll all benefit from, while choosing not to support the hatred, greed, and ignorance of those people who would work toward the opposite of that. Problem with that sorta fantasy is that it doesn't exist except in a really rare handful of "mutant" humans who are generally killed (or "destroyed" in other ways) for their beliefs that we could have a "better world" that isn't built on suffering and greed.

blooalien··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
> What can I do to help?

Nothing you can do to help me specifically. I'm a lost cause at this point. I see no way back from where I'm at. I literally see zero hope for the future of humanity or this truly amazing planet we were fortunate enough to populate for a short while. If you truly do see some sort of future that doesn't end in dystopia or apocalypse, then you can help by doing everything in your power to work tirelessly toward contributing to that future. That's all. I'd help if I could, but I'm physically, spiritually, and emotionally entirely too "broken" in every way at this point to see any way that I could do anything that would turn any of this mess around in even the slightest way.

blooalien··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
> ... and I'm glad that you're a good person.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm not a good person anymore. Not really. I'm the broken wreckage of what used to be a good person. I want to be a good person, but I was born on the wrong planet, or the wrong timeline, or the wrong corner of the multiverse, or whatever. I don't live on a planet where what I want is even in the realm of possibility. Too much hatred, greed, and ignorance here for the life I would prefer to live.

blooalien··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
> Civil society only exists when there is a collective general trust that most people are trying to do the right thing.

I was taught as a child that most people deep down genuinely want to be "good people". If only I had known what an absolute lie that really truly was, I'd have chosen a very different path for my life. Going out of my way to be a "good person" to the best of my ability was a total waste of a life that could have been spent in the pursuit of wealth and power, which I would have been very good at, had I not foolishly chosen to adhere to a "moral code" that was based on fantasy and naivety and a "reality" that just didn't exist as it was taught in schools, churches, and homes.

> A couple of years ago I made the observation that the West would start to copy what China is doing. Ofcourse its only wrong when China does it...

There's no point in seeing anything coming or being right about anything, because the vast majority of people will ridicule you and tell you you're wrong until well after it's too late to change the situation for the better. The tiny handful of us who actually care about a future are a microscopic minority and basically powerless to change it. Best to just live our lives the best we can and to hell with what the rest of the world is doing at this point.

One party is statistically much "dumber" than the other overall, but yeah... Most all of the clowns in D.C. really don't give a rat's ass about anything beyond filling their pockets at the expense of the American people and pushing their (not "We the People") particular individual pet agendas (at the expense of anyone that gets in the way) and anyone that trusts a single damned one of 'em is a gullible fool that shouldn't be trusted to vote.

They're all a buncha professional crooks pretending to rule a nation while they actively corrupt every single value this nation's supposedly supposed to stand for. We need to fire 'em all (or jail, depending on circumstances) and hire all new and better folks (ones who actually care about this nation and it's people) to fill their jobs. Same goes for the corporations that basically own them these days.

blooalien··on Emergent Introspective Awareness in Large Language Models
Now, build an "AI chip" that can never stop "thinking"; even when it's in "sleep mode" it "dreams". Always active. Run it with a monstrous amount of RAM and GPU arrays for active "thinking" and a long term memory store (massive SSD disk array) and use the "dream time" to sort, organize, and prune that memory. Put it into a hybrid constant training/inference state so it can do both/either; constantly updating it's own model weights. Maybe even a tool harness to allow it to update it's own software/request hardware upgrades? Maybe even give it tools to train and implement new/other model types it might need/want? How soon do we get real AGI/ASI? How soon after "The Matrix"/"Terminator"-like reality (or for that matter "Star Trek"-like reality if the AI decides on a benevolent existence)?

> The pure quackery doesn't get them as far because most of their customers are too poor to regularly spend on woowoo crap.

Yeah, but them very same type of folks (like where I grew up in "rancher territory") who can't (or won't) regularly spend on "woowoo crap" will happily budget a reasonable monthly (or even weekly) fee for a bit of good advice, some stretching exercises and "adjustments", and a bit of basic applied physical therapy techniques that provide a measure of genuine relief. That's how chiropracters in "farm country" make their money.

They basically are as you say "practicing physical therapy" (and some other similar and related services) under a different license (chiropractic). If they didn't provide a valid service in places like that, they'd be outta business downright quick-like, because them small-ish towns, word gets around pretty quick if you done somethin' bad like scammin' a hard-workin' neighbor with "woowoo crap".

blooalien··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
> ... and this American people have gotten what they voted for.

Probably one of the biggest flaws of a Democratic system is that a voting majority can mandate a situation that harms literally everyone against the will of everyone else even when those harms are well documented and absolutely provable.

"The majority voted for it" isn't a great answer for the question "Why exactly are we letting the bus driver drive us all over this cliff edge to our fiery deaths?"

"Stop the bus! I want off!"

"Nope. The vote's done. You're stuck with the result."

"Well, what if I voted against driving over the cliff edge?"

"Nope. Majority rules. We all die now."

> Very few managers are good leaders.

I saw (a black & white hand-drawn version of) this image [0] a while back and found it a really effective visual to easily explain the difference between a boss and a leader. (Here's an article that expounds on the topic and has some variants of the preceding image. [1]) I've worked with/for both types and the first type (boss) simply does not inspire loyalty or any interest in "going above and beyond" the bare minimum of absolutely required work from their employees.

The genuine leader type on the other hand often didn't even have to ask employees to put in any extra effort toward their job. Folks just generally went out of their way to try very hard to do their very best work (or damned close to it) for the true leader-type because it wasn't uncommon to see the "leader" right there "in the trenches" with them "getting his hands dirty doin' the work" right alongside them, and it just didn't feel right to not put forth at least the same effort he was.

I think (at least to my mind) the difference (in employee attitudes) is one of respect (leader) vs fear (boss).
