blondie9x··on Flash mobs invade luxury L.A. retailers with brute force, overwhelming numbers
We need to do better than prison for drug addiction and delusional mental illness. Need to make a statewide facility to provide tented area for drug addicts to be removed from cities and suburbs. They can leave the facility after they have recovered from drug addiction or severe delusional mental illness.
blondie9x··on Flash mobs invade luxury L.A. retailers with brute force, overwhelming numbers
They are harder on punishment, that much is proven. It is also proven that harsher punishments are a deterrent to crime.

If you rob a store and get caught and get a 100$ fine that's a bit different then if you rob a store and they cut your hand off for example.

Live-streaming on social media is causing problems where people will live stream and plan an event like this.

Should live-streaming without moderator approval on social be banned? On Twitch, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc. Yes. We have seen so many issues where live streamers cause riots or commit serious crimes.

It needs to be regulated. If they want to regulate crypto, they need to regulate live streams.

blondie9x··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
Finally. Loud cars are one of the biggest "silent" contributors to health risks and climate change. Loud vehicles are tightly coupled with excess speed and acceleration as well. People want to "show off" their rides. Sacrificing the health of those that surround them while they make as much noise as possible.

Think about it. Windows open you suddenly get jolted out of bed when a car flies by that has been modified to produce more noise to boost someone's ego. Moreover the excess tire exhaust and vehicle exhaust from rapid acceleration causes respiratory issues.

About climate change? Of course this causes more climate change. People are forced to close their windows and use conditioned air because of the noise outside. So many summer nights people can't open their windows near streets because of the noise modified vehicles cause.

The same noise and pollution issues apply when you're driving next to them as well. You have to close your windows in case your kids are sleeping or you are trying to listen to something then one of these noise attention seekers comes by who thinks they are awesome and wants you to pay attention to them. Their car is loud, and he or she needs that attention.

It's ridiculous. Its a waste of taxpayers money due to elevated health risks and its a waste of energy because people are forced to close their windows while driving or at home.

blondie9x··on Ocean Heat Record Broken
Why not? That would effectively bring emissions growth to 0. More carbon would start to be fixed then released into the atmosphere again due to growth in afforestation efforts. Within the next 5-10 years we would start to see negative greenhouse gas emissions growth. It's all about balancing the math so we fix more then is released. Stopping fossil fuel emissions shifts the curve towards fixation and greenhouse gas reductions.

As long as we continue to grow carbon fixation efforts without burning more fossil fuels we should head towards a negative growth trend and 350 ppm again.

blondie9x··on Ocean Heat Record Broken
That’s called a tipping point. I think it’s now been broken through. The hardest part of all this is not nearly enough is being done to stop atmospheric greenhouse gases growth. If you looks at growth rates in CH4 and CO2. It’s pretty steady since recording began. It isn’t until it flat lines and we get back to 350 ppm CO2 that we can even begin to get back to the habitable planet we are suited for.
blondie9x··on It’s Getting Too Hot for Airplanes
The positive feedback loop is the most troublesome part of climate change. The only way out it seems is reduced consumption and sacrifice.
blondie9x··on US Rating Cut to AA+ from AAA by Fitch
I used to think this mattered. But like climate change the worse it gets the more the markets ignore it. Until, until what? Not sure.
blondie9x··on A forthcoming collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation
The worst part of climate change is our response. As world conditions worsen we burn more fossil fuels to simulate cooling/heating. It's a positive feedback loop. The more intense the summers get, and the cold snap of winter, the more fossil fuels we need, which then worsens further worsens the greenhouse gas effect. Then we need more fossil fuels on more days and so on. We aren't striving to consume less but to instead create green illusions and box ourselves in virtual reality or simulations. Maybe the simulation technologists say we are in is actually the one we focus on creating as Earth deteriorates more from our over-consumed lives.
blondie9x··on Show HN: I spent 2 years building a personal finance simulator
There is just a flood of these apps. Sigh. Isn't there anything else we could work on and monetize?
blondie9x··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
One of two things is happening here. I'm not sure if its one or the other or really both.

1. Copilot and LLM trained on code is reducing usage of StackOverflow.

2. People are just coding less and searching for less with layoffs and slow down due to burnout.

But it's definitely connected to these points. The degree of magnitude for either though is difficult to assess.

If it is mostly #1 though that's the worst thing isn't it? Because SO is weakened and then the LLMs gradually become less effective. We generate less curiosity and public discussion overtime as people use AI and LLMs more. That's sad for software engineering as a whole. One of the best parts of this job is collaboration and problem solving. Not just individually but as a community as well.

blondie9x··on Show HN: I spent 2 years building a personal finance simulator
These finance apps bore the heck out of me. Seems like they all do the same thing. When to retire based on sufficient money. It's not hard to know you shouldn't overspend in life. Then you just need to figure out when you want to stop working. Not about money but about when you're over it.
blondie9x··on Cooking Air Quality
The byproducts and smoke of cooking meat and vegetables are the real issue. What do you make? In the old days we would probably be cooking this stuff inside.

Not sealed off homes with simulated cooling or heating.

blondie9x··on Cooking Air Quality
I have induction. The air quality is the same. It's not the source of energy so much as it is the cooking of the product itself. My air quality goes to red with induction or gas. Induction doesn't yield cleaner air. Its the smoke from the meat or vegetables changing with the oil and fats.
blondie9x··on Kevin Mitnick has died
Feel bad for the unborn child that will have to be raised without a father because his parents decided selfishly to conceive him or her due to illness.

Raising a child is more than genetics.

blondie9x··on The global fight for critical minerals is costly and damaging
That’s the worst part of the AI race and “clean” electric cars. Behind the scenes the destruction they cause is more than you can imagine.

We think electric cars and GPUs are pushing us ahead. But in reality we are driving the wedge in deeper.

I’m afraid where we end up is like James Hansen said about fossil fuels, but relevant in general, with a "different, practically uninhabitable planet" by triggering a "low-end runaway greenhouse effect."

The only way to actually stop the destruction is if we slow down mining and learn to do more with what we have already mined. To make what we already consumed reusable and stop mining altogether if possible. For fossil fuels, and the rare earth minerals destroying fresh water and food supplies and air quality.

blondie9x··on A gallon of gas = 20 pounds of CO2
What agenda? I don't understand how there is an agenda in describing the physics and science of the climate.
blondie9x··on A gallon of gas = 20 pounds of CO2
Science is indoctrination now? What's the point of an education then?
blondie9x··on A gallon of gas = 20 pounds of CO2

blondie9x··on Countries that will suffer the most temperature change from global warming
There is no benefit to life from anthropogenic climate change anywhere on Earth. 350 ppm of CO2 was the perfect balance that life is made for.

We are up to about 420 ppm of CO2 now. We raised it 70 ppm in less than 200 years. Unreal.

blondie9x··on Humanity faces ‘collective suicide’ over climate crisis, warns UN chief
Sharing this because it seems to be the most succinct description of the climate crisis I’ve heard since I started studying the situation over years ago.

António Guterres told ministers from 40 countries meeting to discuss the climate crisis on Monday: “Half of humanity is in the danger zone, from floods, droughts, extreme storms and wildfires. No nation is immune. Yet we continue to feed our fossil fuel addiction.

He added: “We have a choice. Collective action or collective suicide. It is in our hands.”

We have caused the Halocene extinction. Our wasteful lifestyles are the virus of the planet. The overconsumed. The technologists who think our devices and social media and VR are a substitute to blind us from the truth. We are destroying our planet. That’s reality. Our devices and travel are our escape.

“You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're all singing, all dancing crap of the world.“

What if mankind just lives in peace and balance with nature? No plastic. Carbon balance. Nothing added annually that wouldn’t be taken back and fixed anew by nature. Greenhouse gases back at 350 ppm. What if?

It’s humbling to see nature trying somehow to fight back against us. Their goal. For us to chill more and be more content. What if mankind just lives in peace and balance with nature? No plastic. blondie9x··on Lawsuit claims OpenAI stole 'massive amounts of personal data'
I think that’s the same thing to be honest. You are more talking about protecting the artistic process rather than output. But the output is what is used to train. Not the process.
blondie9x··on Lawsuit claims OpenAI stole 'massive amounts of personal data'
Of course it did. This is how AI is trained and becomes profitable with current business models. It uses your content without paying you for it to generate new content.

AI can be one of the most powerful forces in the world but it needs to pay content creators. If people stop creating new content for AI to train on then it will get stale.

AI can be the product of our dreams and our passions but we need to make sure those who choose to create and share content to train it are treated fairly and compensated when applicable.

Looks like Mars has finally come to us.

I’ve said a lot on here about the climate. If we don’t stop or slow new consumption we will lose our planet.
