blogornot··on How to find time to learn after work (2017)
You had a household where bad grades were not tolerated, but no support in achieving better grades? Sounds like a crappy household/parenting. That doesn't mean everyone else should have a crappy household or parenting philosophy because you managed to get through it.

So, you're suggesting we limit everyone's potential so a few uneducated/poor families don't feel left behind? That's ridiculous.

Should schools offer extra tutoring and support for kids and families that need it? Sure. Should people limit what they learn at home or out-of-school? No.

What is your obsession with correlating good parenting with generational wealth? You can be poor, have relatively uneducated parents and still be taught by them.

My father died when I was five. My mother never finished high school and worked in a medical factory. She still found an hour to try an teach me and help me learn (even when I was beyond her upper skill limit).

blogornot··on The real cost of a preventive health scan goes well beyond the price tag
I don't need future biopsies, only ultrasounds to keep an eye on its size. I don't think there's any harm.

While on vacation in Korea I received a full work up (MRI, blood labs, echo, CT scan, dental work, etc) for a couple thousand dollars. I wanted to do it because I wanted a clear picture of my health. I get headaches a lot and have expressed concerned to doctors in the USA but they never seemed to care. I honestly wanted the MRI to rule out anything bad.

Was it worth? I think so. The doctors ended up seeing something on my thyroid which was then biopsied. It came back benign but something to keep an eye on and check every six months or so. This carried back over to the USA.

blogornot··on Ask HN: What is cheapest way to just receive (not send) email to a domain I own?
Buy a super cheap email domain for ~3$ a year and set the domain to forward all email it receives (wildcard) to a predefined email address you control. Namecheap will forward emails for free.

I can see the value in putting a product or project out there and facing the scrutiny and pressure from the public.

However, I am not sure pulling the curtains back and exposing the process is as valuable. My personal site would expose code and raw thoughts regarding my process and philosophy. I'm fine with the end result being scrutinized, but why open up the process to scrutiny? Perhaps the philosophy could be scrutinized, but it's not as valuable as the end result.

Judge what I make, not the process. I'll have to give it more thought.

I have a mirror of the repository but the last update was in October 29 of 2022. Does anyone have a more recent mirror?

I'd like to see a captcha that shows you C code samples and you need to spot the memory corruption.
