blodovnik··on Show HN: Incubator as a Service – we build, launch and test your employees ideas
Not many companies would have budget for this.

I'm not even sure which part of the company finances it would come from... Maybe employee training?

blodovnik··on Insects feel persistent pain after injury, evidence suggests
Why wouldn't they feel pain?

It's such a superior attitude to even consider that only humans could feel pain.

It's also obvious that any complex organism feels pain... It the most basic evolutionary protection mechanism. Anything that didn't feel pain would soon be evolved out.

blodovnik··on The death watch for the X Window System has probably started
There's a lot that xwundows can do that it'll take many years for anything else to catch up to.

What does Hurd uniquely solve?
blodovnik··on A better zip bomb
Is there any way to detect these things before unzipping them?
blodovnik··on My low cost provider of GPUs has run out of capacity. Good alternatives?
Aws and Google spot instances are easily comparable price wise to hetzner but it really depends on what you are doing, which you haven't said.

For example a g3 spot instance can be as low as 19 cents per hour $138/month.

Google GPU instances I've run for 14 cents an hour.

I think these aren't the lowest prices either.

Can you link some examples?
blodovnik··on Was OS/2 a viable alternative for daily DOS and Windows tasks?
No it really wasn't.

If you want to understand the mindset at the time, it was all about hardware drivers. The only thing that mattered was hardware drivers, and the hardware manufacturers created drivers for dos/windos and nothing else at all.

Drivers was one of the primary challenges holding back any competition to MS. True also of OS/2.

OS/2 was seen as a solid architecture, but it arrived without a GUI, right at the time that the GUI became the key feature needed in any OS. It didn't take long for the Presentation Manager GUI to arrive, but it was nothing exciting.

The other thing seen as an issue at the time was that OS/2 was built for the rather terrible 80286 when really what was needed was full 32 bit 80386 support. It eventually got the 32 bit support but this was a bad start.

Microsoft released Word and Excel for OS/2 then discontinued them. That was the finish of OS/2.

blodovnik··on Ask HN: At 9 cents/GB downloaded, how can any company afford cloud computing?
This page says s3 is 9 cents https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/
blodovnik··on Raspberry Pi 4
The latest model in top drawer computing!

I'll definitely get one though. Good specs.

blodovnik··on Startup idea checklist
Saying that entertainment and leisure is the "solution to the problem of boredom" seems to really be working hard to prop up the idea that everything worth doing is actually solving some problem.

As Rivierakid above says, it's kinda weird to frame it that way.

blodovnik··on Startup idea checklist
>> Thats because thats how you normally get people to give you money.

That's not right. People spend vast amounts of money and time on fun and entertainment hobbies education pleasure and leisure.

It's misguided to focus only on finding problems that need solving and pain that needs alleviation.

blodovnik··on Startup idea checklist
There's a school of thought that you must only build things that solve a problem or ease a pain or fix someone's dissatisfaction.

This list seems very focused on that and seems to entirely miss asking questions like "is this cool or fun or entertaining"?
