blocked_again··on Usage of EU subsidiaries of US cloud providers deemed unlawful by German court
Simple question. Who do you trust your data with?

1. A company in your own country which got marketshare mostly because of legal reasons and government interference.

2. A company which got marketshare by building products that people loved all over the world, has the smartest people working for them and have generated more value than the vast majority of the companies that existed previously in the world combined.

How is citing one of biggest human crisis of last century against the same country which did it against their own citizens a cheap shot. It's totally relevant.
blocked_again··on Usage of EU subsidiaries of US cloud providers deemed unlawful by German court
All I am saying is Individuals are perfectly capable of making that decision. Whether they should store their data in Germany, California or some random Caribbean island.
blocked_again··on Usage of EU subsidiaries of US cloud providers deemed unlawful by German court
Yeah. Individuals are perfectly capable of making that decision. I don't want my government telling me where I should keep my data.

You do know that nobody in US is forcing you to use this site or any other US companies for that matter. You are doing it with your own free fill.

Also, remember the time when Germany decided to go after their own people? How does laws like this help when it comes to situations like that?

I think this kind of affirms the general opinion that Germany and many traditionally powerful European countries is doing poorly when it comes to modern tech. What went wrong with Germany and Europe? They used to be the front runners in tech once upon a time.

Because sustainability is an unquantifiable word that doesn't mean anything. Please explain sustainability

Also cheaper doesn't mean it have to be low quality.

Computers used to be unaffordable to vast majority of people and companies 50 years back. Now everyone has one in their pocket.

blocked_again··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
It's a free market. There are plenty of companies investing in R&D even after knowing that there is the possibility of copyright infringement. There is still a huge upside in developing these tech.
blocked_again··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
The companies knew that copyright infringement is a possibility when developing the tech. They knew the reward was still worth it despite of that.

I am not getting anything designing work for you. On the other hand I can launch my own side projects. I know that if they are any good people are going to copy and start rip offs. I am willing to take that risk.

Why does it matter? In grand scheme of things there are now more people who have access to cheaper and efficent cleaning systems.

All companies are reverse engineering the Universe anyway. It's not like you build these technologies out of thin air.

> No, this means companies are being pushed to build the least expensive things

Least expensive literally translate to more efficeny. To build cheaper things you need to spend less on electricity for manufacturing, less on transport (fuel), less on labor etc. Which means more efficeny.

> Eventually sustainability issues will be fixed because if not everyone will eventually die from the lack of resources, doesn't mean that the fixes are timely or with the least suffering that we as a species could be capable

Sure. But this also assumes we are on the verge of collapsing because of sustainability issues. We don't know that. This also assumes somehow if we start pushing on sustainability now we are going to overcome that. We don't know that.

Sustainability issues will never be fixed by companies building for sustainability.

Vast majority of the world population don't give a shit about sustainability.

Consumers always want to improve their life by spending as little money as possible.

This means companies are being pushed to build more efficient things.

For example Electric cars can travel much longer than traditional cars for the same cost of fuel.

More efficient means, less pollution.

Humans will fix sustainability issues automatically.

But it would never be by building products whose core service offering is sustainability.

Best guess would be the same structures that have been kept around us by over the past hundred years for their importance, scarcity and usefulness.

Some of them being Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Machu Pichu, Petra, etc.

blocked_again··on Ask HN: What is the job market like for niche languages (Nim, Crystal)?
Best strategy for becoming a high paying/good software engineer would be to think of yourselves as problem solver and language as just one of the tool for problem solving.

Thinking of yourselves as someone who is a writer of a certain programming language is self constarining and missing the point.

> As a result of the insider trading scheme, NIKHIL WAHI and RAMANI collectively generated realized and unrealized gains totaling at least approximately $1.5 million.

Is this a joke? Seriously. I thought this case was about people inside trading hundreds of millions of dollars.

I have bought 30+ Kindle books on Amazon.

I have only bought 1 physical book so far. I bought it because it was not available on Kindle. Also I thought it was worth the effort carrying that particular book around when I change apartments.

blocked_again··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Because the system is designed mostly by founders who built the company from ground up and had the maximum skin in the game. Employees have minimum skin in the game, never have full context on things and are easily replaceable. You are always free to start your own company according to your own rules.
blocked_again··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
If you live in fear of loosing job you have far more important things to work on first than changing company culture.
blocked_again··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Sure. Also for the employer to fire employees for doing that. So doing it is stupidity instead of just finding a better company that values your skill.
blocked_again··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
There are already systems in place in companies for you to do that. If you want to bring Unions in to the picture it means

1. Your opinions are not useful or valuable.

2. The company is poor at adapting good ideas through existing channels.

In either case you should leave the company and find another one.

blocked_again··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
If the problem is big enough for you, you are perfectly capable of changing company or country. If not, it's not important for you or you don't care enough to put in the work.
