blnqr··on Justice Dept. brands NYC an ‘anarchist jurisdiction,’ targets federal funds
An historian friend of mine called this a "thermidorian reaction." I had to look it up because of course I first thought of chemistry. Made me wonder if the US really is at risk for some kind of modern dictator or emperor.
blnqr··on It’s not just what you eat, it’s when you eat it
I have wondered about this for a long time. Seems like I hear a lot of anecdotal hyping of intermittent fasting, but this is the first study I've seen on oscillations of metabolites and genes.

blnqr··on I suspect many task deadlines are designed to force engineers to work for free
I had a co-founder who really thrived on challenges. Not impossible deadlines, but almost "I dare you to do this by Monday" kind of thing.
blnqr··on Pandemic Making College Students Question the Price of Their Education
Good point. And the ones in the bottom quartile on the pay scale are doing most of the work. The more senior profs don't teach much and get paid a lot more.
blnqr··on Ham radio is not dying, it's evolving
I became a ham out of love and respect for my deceased father, who held a General license, knew Morse code and had been a comms tech in the Air Force. I keep the license in case of emergencies. But neither of those (good) reasons are going to pull new people into Ham.
blnqr··on Ham radio is not dying, it's evolving
I remember somebody saying Ham is just a bunch of grumpy old retired guys complaining about the government. Someone else said wait, we aren't all retired!
blnqr··on Pandemic Making College Students Question the Price of Their Education
The article doesn't mention it, but you wonder if the all-online model, sometimes with non-traditional funding (like Lambda School) will gain in popularity.
blnqr··on Pandemic Making College Students Question the Price of Their Education
Should teachers and administrators get full pay when a lot of the campus is shut down and instruction is virtual? If I were a student or parent of a student, I wouldn't be too happy with that.
blnqr··on Africa declared free of wild polio
Yes, I know. I have friends there who are fantastic, smart, committed civil servants working within their mandate and structure. I have a Master's in Public Policy from the Kennedy School, I'm not anti-government. But mission creep has hurt the CDC more than helped the nation. Public health is far too big a remit for any one agency.

You are totally right about this (and thanks for sharing your personal perspective). I used to think the CS program at UNLV was excessively backward or old-school, which it is, but the root cause is those golden handcuffs. What company do you work for in LV? If we should take it offline, I am bo@blnqr.com
blnqr··on Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is stepping down after 21 years
You got that right, 20 startups or even 200. And they might have made a great return. Instead, they focused on bars and public art (which I think is cool btw) and made a fundamental real estate mistake by loudly announcing where they were going to buy and how much they had to spend.
blnqr··on Reddit Shuts Down AMA from Former NSA Technical Director Bill Binney
Consequences for the whistleblower should depend on the laws that were in place when (or if) they broke the law. For example, Edward Snowden probably committed treason and that carries a harsh penalty but it is good that he leaked the NSA classified docs.

Not sure what you mean by exposed, but I think the same logic applies. Those who suffered harm should get redress. Those who committed harm should be punished.

Headline is a little misleading. The question is why are there so few moderates period.
blnqr··on eGovernment Provo Rumor Stop – does this have any chance?
Will people trust a government-led effort to "set the record straight"? You cannot submit a rumor anonymously, which I suspect will limit participation severly.
blnqr··on Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is stepping down after 21 years
Great question, and you hit it squarely: Hsieh and company did not invest the $350 million (!) as originally announced https://www.technologyreview.com/2013/07/17/15645/zappos-ceo...

blnqr··on Reddit Shuts Down AMA from Former NSA Technical Director Bill Binney
Ever since my service in the Navy I've thought that whistleblowers (1) should definitely speak out, and (2) should be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Las Vegas is great for outdoor activities. I've lived here for 24 years, out west toward Red Rock, and we do a lot of hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, camping, skiing/boarding is close at Mt Charleston. Soccer teams, excellent parks. Even Pickle Ball LOL

That's exactly right. The best bookstore in town shut down. The best coffee shop is still there, a wonderful place, but not much else, sadly. (Disclosure: I am a 24-year local in tech who really wanted it to work.)

BLUF: it takes more than one man with a vision to create a tech ecosystem. It takes rich nerds who want to invest locally and stick around. Las Vegas will never have that.

I have lived in Las Vegas for 24 years. We moved here to raise a family because it is my wife's home town. (Her father was a scientist and manager with the federal government.)

I was and am in tech, working from home except for two years with one of the very few successful tech startups in Las Vegas from 2000-2001.

I wanted the tech-oriented revitalization to succeed, but it it hasn't and we are moving to Utah ("Silicon Slopes").
