blitmap··on Show HN: 100% offline Shamir's Secret Sharing GUI
Are you saying JS could modify the CSP policy or meta tag after page load?

Suddenly I'm thinking it would be very cool to be able to right-click on a tab and say 'Take Tab Offline' Imagine if it was like a toggle on the tab itself like muting sound from a tab. It would instruct the browser to isolate the tab/process from the network? I'm not sure how Web Workers play into this.

blitmap··on The American Press Is Destroying Itself
I understand how dangerous it is to have news organizations operating in bad faith. Even if I recognize it and avoid their venue, my neighbors may not. In 2020, these online platforms can reach a billion+ people. Misleading statements, or flat-out lies can create a mob very quickly.

I'd still rather have the ability to dissent online, rather than losing the platforms that may be held liable for what I post.

Section 230 is a good thing. Removing it would (in my opinion) only lead to de-platforming people the state disagrees with.

"Think of the children!"

blitmap··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
I would say morality is knowing right from wrong. Having conviction and holding to your principles would be integrity. It is admirable.
blitmap··on The case for declaring armed and fully autonomous drone swarms as WMD
I'm not sure how contributory to the discussion this is, but I love watching this short every couple years:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyMNIFZTQkg

(I love it in the sense that I'd love a dystopian scifi movie, but not a reality like this)

blitmap··on Anxiety in product development
This is a really wonderful way to reframe your perspective.
blitmap··on Show HN: I made a simple PDF text editor
Would be neat to do font recognition against available web fonts to try go find a match, then convert the web font to truetype or whatever format the pdf used, and re-embed the front.
blitmap··on OpenSSL 3.0
I had not considered that it may have support for hardware accelerated crypto.
blitmap··on OpenSSL 3.0
That goes a long way, thank you :-) One of the other comments was saying OpenSSL probably has the best support for secure elements (hardware accelerated crypto?).
blitmap··on OpenSSL 3.0
I don't have much familiarity with OpenSSL and crypto scares me away from reading the sources. I wish someone could give a full run-down of everything that is in OpenSSL, an overview. You hear all the time about it being bloated and supporting too many things. I wish I better understood that. It's why people turn to wolfssl and mbedtls, right?

Smaller projects that aim for minimalism and robustness probably suffer from a lack of peer review with a more niche community backing them. Trade-offs trade-offs. I also wish I understood where they compete:

OpenSSL <-> WolfSSL <-> mbedtls

blitmap··on How We Built SELinux Support for Kubernetes
My naive understanding is that containers do not provide complete security.

Also, I could see giving a user shell access within a container and still restricting what they do with SELinux.

blitmap··on A major reason for departures at Slack was “remote work request rejected”
Because of COVID19 my workplace has rushed right into Microsoft Teams. There's so much efficiency lost creating large-scale meetings and phone conferences. Coming from the land of IRC I've created a few teams with massive rosters, but nobody seems to really understand the paradigm. They see all these messages come in and they leave the team/discussion/channel.

I keep saying "mute the discussion" and @mentions will signal you if needed, but it is lost on folks who haven't done this kind of things.

They're used to discussion spaces being set up per-incident, instead of just lingering/loitering in a room.

blitmap··on Thai Database Leaks 8.3B Internet Records
I recently set up a dns-over-https (doh) proxy on my router to forward dns requests to 5 resolvers, that also use dnssec.

I wish Firefox would expose the option from about:config in its user-friendly Preferences page so it will respect the "system default" (the advertised dns server).

I am - for no legitimate reasons - avoiding Cloudflare as a resolver. As far as I know Firefox uses Cloudflare.

blitmap··on TI removes access to assembly programs on the TI-83 Premium CE
This is the only reason to buy these calculators.
blitmap··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
I think it does depend on how familiar the syntax feels to each individual. To me Coffeescript is the right balance. I absolutely love writing Literate Coffeescript. I am _not_ a fan of strictly typed languages but I do hope Coffeescript finds a friendly syntax for gradual typing like TS in the future. I usually prototype in a 'ducky' way and then lock down type expectations when I'm polishing.
blitmap··on Intel accused by workers of prioritizing chip output over safety
Speaking as someone who knows nothing about fab: What are the most dangerous aspects of the job? What's the most likely injuries to happen doing x?
blitmap··on Why strace doesn't work in Docker
Agree! Wish I had the mental capacity to stay focused like this person :-)
blitmap··on Coronavirus Country Comparator
I agree. This is the best one I've seen and I love that I can add/remove countries and switch between linear and log scale. Definitely add log-log.

(Thank you, this is great!)

blitmap··on AMD’s Mobile Revival: Redefining the Notebook Business with the Ryzen 9 4900HS
I see a 1440p display :( I have this currently.
blitmap··on AMD’s Mobile Revival: Redefining the Notebook Business with the Ryzen 9 4900HS
Even on a gaming laptop I'm usually playing at half-resolution, so I like 2160p or 2400p because for gaming that would be 1080 & 1200. Normally I'm running a text-dense setup where >1440p is very nice. :-)
blitmap··on AMD’s Mobile Revival: Redefining the Notebook Business with the Ryzen 9 4900HS
I just want an AMD "gaming laptop" with an OLED, 4k display :( Ideally 3840x2400.
blitmap··on Inkscape 1.0 Release Candidate
I am an incredibly huge fan of Inkscape and the monumental efforts put forth by the developers of this amazing piece of software. I cannot do half of the things I've done in Inkscape that I've tried to do in Visio.
blitmap··on Wildlife is reclaiming Yosemite National Park
I'd love to see cheap slower travel available. Bring back the blimps! :-)
blitmap··on Chrome phasing out support for User-Agent
I hear what you're saying, but they pay people enough to follow a potential company-wide policy: Don't f-ck with user agents!
blitmap··on YouTube to limit default video quality around the world for a month
Obligatory, think-about-the-children. You make solid points, but so does the parent. ISPs have the capacity.
blitmap··on Philips Hue Bridge v1 online services will be shut off after April 2020
For the most part, at least we don't have to worry about forgotten, rogue IoT devices. The overriding mission has been to connect it to shitty online services. Watch these companies go out of business or deprecate APIs.

This is very dramatic, but imagine something like this:

blitmap··on Linux-ready, made-in-Germany “Volla Phone” succeeds on Kickstarter
I just want a hand-sized general-purpose tablet with a 5g modem I can plug in when I need a phone. I like the 'security by isolation' aspect of physically unplugging my cellular connectivity. Otherwise I piggyback on Google Voice for texts/calls. Also bring back physical slide-out keyboards like the Motorola Sidekick.

:-)

blitmap··on Firefox is showing the way back to a world that’s private by default
My absolutely largest issue with Firefox is how settings revert after updates without any notice. It is good that updates are frequent. It is bad that settings revert and defaults are not safe.

I'll never touch Chrome again.

blitmap··on Updated ThinkPad Laptop Portfolio
I've gone to a nearby Micro Center and I found I can accept and even readily enjoy the keyboard on the new Dell XPS 2-in-1 with a 3840x2400 display (16:10 / 8:5). It has very shallow, maglev keys. It takes getting used to but I believe it would be durable and even enable quicker typing. The problem is I have a laptop with an OLED screen. I wish I didn't have to step backwards in terms of color reproduction. The device is also too expensive right now.

I'm waiting for 8:5, OLED or microLED, and I'm continually looking at Thunderbolt docks for something cheap & compact. The Dell XPS 2-in-1 is very close to what I want, but I wish there were 1 more USB type-c.

Dell actually has an OLED screen on the Dell XPS 15, but it's 3840x2160 (16:9). c'est la vie..

blitmap··on Chrome deploys deep-linking in latest build despite privacy concerns
I'm actually looking forward to WebAssembly but I'm just imagining wasm applications tying into ChromeOS and we have ActiveX all over again.
blitmap··on Stop Using Encrypted Email
Okay, so what blend of secure messenger is your friend-group using? I am hoping Signal becomes more mainstream but it isn't nearly the population that uses GPG for email..

(I do agree with you)
