blisseyGo··on One in 10 ballots rejected in last month’s vote-by-mail elections in New Jersey
The sheer amounts of non-factual talking points being spouted on this voter ID issue is outstanding. It's like people treat us minorities and poor people as some dumb and incapable population who can't even get a single ID for voting. I come from a country with over 900 million eligible voters where 600 million votes were cast and counted all with strict VOTER ID.

People keep buying into this nonsensical argument about voter id suppressing poor people, minorities etc but all they do is patronize and virtue signal. Why don't you admit the real reason - that Democrats won't be able to cheat if there were voter ID? Just like now they are trying to even remove signature verification from the mail in votes. It's all for cheating to gain as much power while calling the other side names. It's so obvious but people keep lying.

> disenfranchised

India with a 900 million eligible voters in 2019 elections had the biggest turnout - 67%. Aka over 600 million votes were cast and counted. They have strict voter ID laws. Despite having a large disenfranchised population.

This is just a talking point without any basis in facts.

blisseyGo··on UPI: India's Unified Payments Interface
I think US (and other western countries like Canada, European countries etc) are VERY different from the Indian market. In US, Canada etc, everyone has an email and banks allow interactive payments already. I have yet to have a single time where I had problems paying someone for something. Interac etransfer works well. Even iMessage, FB messenger etc allow payments. Other services like PayPal, Stripe, Patreon cover the rest of the base.

India is a completely different market. There are millions of people there who don't even have a bank account, nor do they have email. The road-side vendors use cash.

Putting tariffs on other country products is a lot different than what's happening here. Every country puts tariffs. It's business and trade.

Facebook has had a Tiktok competitor called Lasso for 2 years. It failed though. They are shutting that down and simply porting the features over to their existing Instagram app.

The most recent example was Grindr which was first sold to Chinese company and the government had to force them to sell it back because the app contained location info of potentially sensitive military personnel.

I think out of all of them, Twitter is the most complicated. Their comment threads itself are super complex. Plus the character limit forcing people to post in multiple threads makes it worse.

UI wise, Snapchat is the worst.

Are you referring to Facebook as a company or Facebook - the product? I do think the Facebook product itself is dying. But their other ventures like IG, WhatsApp etc are doing very well.

Anyone else think Facebook launching this might stop Microsoft from buying TikTok now? Depending upon how much money they need, I think Microsoft not having any past social media presence might scare them taking on Facebook as a competitor.

Do you think reddit can be reborn to make it better and not have those problems?

Do you think HN not having pictures plays a role in keeping it cleaner than Reddit?

I would actually be curious if one were to start charging for each social media, which of them most people would be willing to pay vs which ones would disappear.

I keep getting hit with the rate limiter so I wasn't able to try it :(

> There was an error and I still haven't implemented retry to make it invisible. You can absolutely submit your request again a few times; this is a self-healing Kubernetes cluster. Some models (voices) get more load than others and/or are scaled to fewer or more pods. There's also a rate limiter, but there aren't error messages yet.

blisseyGo··on One company's plan to build a search engine Google can't beat
I am fairly certain this feature used to work well earlier last year. It broke sometime in summer last year as I even made a post on Reddit asking if this was a new bug.

Unless the redesign of Reddit broke this somehow? But as far as I know, this has broken for other sites too. And Reddit redesign is over 2 years old now.

blisseyGo··on One company's plan to build a search engine Google can't beat
I find google's search filters are 100% broken. Just tested this myself again.

Try searching for

site:reddit.com best headphones

And click "Tools" and set the date filter to be "Past week" for example.

Click the first result. You will notice it's from a year ago. Click the second result, it's from 2 years ago and so on. Not a single result matches the date filter. Similar issues with the other filters.

It's 100% broken and been this way for at least a year now as far as I remember.

blisseyGo··on Turns out half the internet has a single-point-of-failure called “Cloudflare”
For me, the biggest disappointment was when they were defending hosting terrorist site for "free speech" reasons:

https://www.fastcompany.com/90312063/how-cloudflare-straddle...

https://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-and-free-speech/

> the company serves at least seven groups on the U.S. State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations, including al-Shabab, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), al-Quds Brigades, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, and Hamas.

> CEP has sent letters to Cloudflare since February 13, 2017, warning about clients on the service, including Hamas, the Taliban, the PFLP, and the Nordic Resistance Movement. The latest letter, from February 15, 2019, warns of what CEP identified as three pro-ISIS propaganda websites.

All this while routinely censoring other sites. Their actions are very different than their words.
