blickentwapft··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
Whilst his stance is to be applauded, it lessens the value of the stance given that he’s not sacrificing much and won’t suffer for his cause.

Doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do, just that it would carry more weight if he was leaving to go work at Burger King. Then you’d say “man that guy stands tall”.

Edit: Ok reasonable criticism, I’ll withdraw.

blickentwapft··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
It’s a highly privileged position to be in to make a personal stand and leave your $250,000 job for another $250,000 job.

Not judging this way or that, just saying.

Any time I hear “AI powered”, I can’t help it but the image of a curtain pulling back to reveal a bunch of hamsters turning a wheel comes to mind.
blickentwapft··on The Pitchforks Are Coming For Us Plutocrats (2014)
There’s no problem with capitalism.

The problem is rich people aren’t willing to share the wealth with less fortunate.

Socialism is a dirty word in the USA but it’s really just about taking care of everyone. Rich people - to generalize - aren’t ok with people getting free or minimal cost health care education housing and a financial safety net. But in general terms the rich fight against this.

People get mad when you .... the rich... can have houses and cars and holidays and all the good things, but no one fights to ensure the less fortunate can own houses, that they aren’t bankrupted when they get sick, that they don’t have to work till they’re 78 even assuming they can get work.

That’s why the pitchforks will one day come. Because the rich want all for us, none for you.

blickentwapft··on Major Linux Problems on the Desktop, 2020 edition
This is so precisely a representation of Unix think, and why Linux has such a problem competing as a desktop.
blickentwapft··on Major Linux Problems on the Desktop, 2020 edition
The biggest most obvious slap you in the face problem with the Ubuntu desktop is cut and paste.

This is the key thing a desktop should get right but it’s so wrong.

It uses different keys to both OS X and windows, whereas it really should seamlessly offer both key combinations. And it’s inconsistent between applications.

We’re so far down the Linux desktop path for cut and paste to be this broken.

I still feel an irrational sense of alarm.

blickentwapft··on Why is AI so useless for business?
New technologies are overestimated in the short term and underestimated in the long term.

The more successful the battle against coronavirus, the less effective such an app would appear.
blickentwapft··on A highly efficient, real-time text-to-speech system deployed on CPUs
It’s a pity that all the best text to speech and speech to text systems are cloud based with heavy vendor lock in.

blickentwapft··on Fonts extracted from BIOSes and VGA ROMs
Sadly I just sold an old z80 sign making device from long ago and it had about 10 add on rom font cartridges. Would have been good to give them to this guy.
blickentwapft··on Fonts extracted from BIOSes and VGA ROMs
I don’t know why but I love VGA text mode fonts. This project is awesome.

Are there pictures of the fonts? I didn’t see any.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
? Don’t understand your point.

Is your point that small companies appoint unsuitable people to architect systems? Why because they know no better?

FYI many years in small and startups also large and medium.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
That’s not architecture. The tasks you describe are those of a development lead or dev manager.

An architect might also be a dev team lead, in which case they might have such responsibilities, but the point remains that such detail oriented aspects of the development process are what the dev team lead does.

The job of a building architect isn’t to ensure the builders know how to use their tools and keep them neat, and to ensure they measure straight lines.

The role of the architect is to design the system at a high level to meet a myriad of business and other requirements such as performance security reliability interoperability extensibility etc etc

The architect is politician, diplomat, technical strategic planner, salesperson.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
Precisely my point.

An architect is someone who has been designing and building software architectures for years as a developer and or team lead and has accumulated the skills of an architect until eventually they get do take a job solely focused on the architecture aspect of development.

Crazy to make someone lead architect who hasn’t got this behind them.

Architecture certifications? What the?

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
How can you get to be lead architect if you don’t already know how to do the job incredibly well?

Like how could someone design/architect a skyscraper if they didn’t already know how to do it?

Why would you accept such a job if you didn’t know that you were passionate about it, skilled and experienced?

blickentwapft··on Small functions considered harmful
"Considered harmful"?!? Why, this must be both IMPORTANT and LEGITIMATE, and the author has AUTHORITY. When a negative opinion carries such an academic, aloof, and professional sounding headline then I am inclined to give it great credence. This guy didn't just say "here's something I think is bad", he said it in fancy and upmarket words. Let's closely follow what they say.....

Seriously, HN should have code that auto flags anything including a subject line of "considered harmful".

blickentwapft··on Show HN: Shareable reasons to upgrade to Python 3
Damn you'd think it was rocket science. For goodness sake it was EASY to upgrade. People just wanted to whine and whine until eventually they had to try it and find it wasn't that hard.

Now everyone uses python 3 and has stopped griping, which wasn't warranted in the first place.
