The key quote about go for me was that it was designed to stop google engineers trying to be clever, and clever FP/ML stuff was excluded explicitly

hi!!!!!!
blankaccount··on Ask HN: How do I find energy to work on hobbies after the work day ends?
It doesn't have to be framed so negatively. Companies want to buy your prime time, and the market is priced for prime time hours.
blankaccount··on Sleep duration is associated with brain structure and cognitive performance
I think thats the point of dream journaling - the dream itself doesn't matter, what matters is how your subconscious mind fills in the blanks to create meaning relevant to your waking life.

Very interesting ideas in this thread: 1. Remembering the dream you were just having re-induces sleep 2. Writing a dream journal first thing every morning as a means of warming up higher levels of cognition (to help break through the morning haze) 3. Given #1 and #2: if you stop journaling, you might end up with a habit that puts you back to sleep in the mornings.

blankaccount··on The Quest to Be Good at Everything
I have started walking down this path and I’m finding the same thing. Your comment was validating.
blankaccount··on Ask HN: How do you work with the fear of your own incompetence?
fear of rejection - your manager hasnt made your workplace feel like a safe environment for you, or you havent expressed that you would like more validation. you’ll need to talk with your manager for this.

overly critical and ego driven perspective - how angry do you get at yourself for making mistakes outside of work? meditation and building a softer/less judgemental mind can work through this

lack of confidence in your ability to find another job - study up on interviewing, apply for some companies. create backup options for yourself.

fear of financial stability - like a previous poster said, it helps to have enough savings to weather any financial blips

fear of the unknown - improv classes are great at building confidence in yourself when dealing with unknown unknowns

just some ideas to work with

blankaccount··on Culture Fit Interview Questions
If one of your strongly held beliefs is "spaces over tabs" and you think that belief is information that has sway in the interview AND you take the advice to not reveal the information, then how are you not misrepresenting yourself?

You're answering like a person who doesn't hold strong beliefs to a question designed to identify strong beliefs, knowing that you are a person who holds those strong beliefs. Is that not misrepresentation to bypass the filtering mechanism?

We might be talking about slightly different things - if you have a strong belief then I agree you should try sell it, and doing so would demonstrate leadership qualities.

blankaccount··on Culture Fit Interview Questions
> "Anyway given that mind reading is impossible, and that you want the job, what to do?"

> "Example, the interviewer might toss out "So, tabs or spaces?" ...and maybe you also honestly believe this is something worth flaming about ... I wouldn't advise revealing the latter information. Here's an opportunity to guess the intent though."

To me, this reads as "if you want the job then you [should/are entitled to] misrepresent yourself to bypass the filtering mechanism". If that's the case, then your whole reply reads as a complaint about how hard it is to cheat when anti-cheating tactics are in place.

Am I misunderstanding?

blankaccount··on Humans Who Are Not Concentrating Are Not General Intelligences
> There was one recent one that even asked “What’s a pirate’s favorite letter?”, and the bot had noticed the answer was being given in the form of letters, but I don’t think a single instance of the bot proposed “r”. But it does not understand humor in the /slightest/.

To me this actually sounds hilarious, if it is as you describe it. It's the kind of joke you'd find on The Office:

Dwight: "What's a pirate's favourite letter?" Jim: "M" Jim: "N" Jim: "O" Jim: "P" Jim: "Q" Jim: "..." Jim: "S"

> "Toss some leeches around and wait 'til we get there." Like the above poster said, I've seen this style of spam-y context-free meme on reddit before too.

Do you have a source for more of these stories?
blankaccount··on Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs
I agree, I saw below in someone else's comment that the issue is with the attitude of "[index] stocks will always go up in the long term", which is similar to the attitude "house prices always go up in the long term" which caused the 2008 crash.
blankaccount··on Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs
The article is claiming that index funds are an overhyped bubble, so of course they'll out perform actively managed funds that have better liquidity.
blankaccount··on During the Renaissance, the beard was the defining feature of a man
Did beards go in/out of fashion, or did oppressing this particular form of masculinity go in/out of fashion?
blankaccount··on SoftBank plans to lend $20B to its CEO and employees amid volatile markets
Can you elaborate a bit on the part between Softbank spending on India's uber drivers resulting in an increase of Japanese exports? Is it just that there is a desire for Japanese products in India, but not enough cash?
blankaccount··on What Swimming Taught Me About Happiness
"Too tired to learn new things and I need to recharge." This is the part where optimising for happiness kicks in. I was in a similar situation and it involved investing less energy in things I was doing to open up energy to learn music. Music probably won't help my career or physical fitness, but I'm gambling that it will pay off in happiness down the line.
blankaccount··on The CUE Data Constraint Language
I also flicked through to find a little example use case and solution, but was disappointed.
blankaccount··on Ask HN: Should I find a job or try to build a profitable project?
I was convinced I should build a productivity app because none of the existing apps suited me. Turns out I was an unorganised person blaming their tools. I went low tech and organised myself by writing into Bear.app, which made me realise I didn’t want to make a productivity app I just wanted to be organised.

How do you feel about streams/lambdas with Java's checked exceptions?
blankaccount··on A guide to useEffect in React
The nice thing about functional programming is that you can reason about execution and write lint rules to fix pitfalls that you can't detect with imperative programming.
blankaccount··on Java Streams and State
I really like your summary of the situation. I'd add that the author seems to have tried to fix a functional readability problem with OO techniques, ending up with the same kingdom of nouns problem - the worst of both worlds.

I think the functional solution would be to separate increment and transform: Stream.iterate(0, i -> i + 1).map(i -> new Pair(i, Math.Pow(i, 2));
