blamarvt··on Price increase on .io domains on January 1, 2022 (Renewal: $55.00)
While there are some performance differences [1] between TLDs, I don't personally think it should factor very heavily when choosing one.

As for reliability, there have been a few ".io" outages and I remember ".club" going down a few years ago but DNS makes complete TLD outages pretty rare.

I'd say the biggest reason to avoid certain TLDs is the human factor. Humans are used to typing ".com" or ".org" or ".net". I don't have any data to back that up though, so it probably isn't a satisfying answer!

blamarvt··on I’m putting a WiFi router into a wall charger
Now, put it in a case like [1] this with USB pass-through and slap a "Property of McDonalds IT" sticker on it and I'm guessing you could keep it there for longer...

blamarvt··on Show HN: Fakeflix – Netflix open source clone
Honestly the official Netflix site seems to perform similarly to your implementation in terms of number of files it downloads and the size of files.

One thing I found was when emulating mobile screen size I wasn't able to horizontally scroll with my track pad. It works on Netflix though. I'm betting you'll find 100+ of those 'small' things with user testing across different OS/browser combinations.

blamarvt··on How People Get Rich Now
I think the problem here might be the different meanings of "money is tight".

blamarvt··on Cricut's Unfair Lockdown
I started out thinking the same but doesn't it matter that their devices have always been required to use their cloud service? This seems to be a company pivoting from a free service with an upfront hardware cost to a subscription service with the same upfront hardware cost. At least that's how I imagine they will try to spin it.
blamarvt··on Ask HN: AWS rejects my request to close my account, is it legal?
I've made this mistake, and all it took was opening a support ticket from the root (payer) account to have them update the email address for the sub-account. Did you ask them to do that?
blamarvt··on Rackspace S-1
> Is this just a cash grab by the company that took them private?

Absolutely. My uninformed ex-Rackspace-employee take is that Apollo Global Management just wants to raise more money to further run the company into the ground.

blamarvt··on Ask HN: What happens next after a successful lockdown?
Isn't it about flattening the curve instead of eliminating the curve?
blamarvt··on Boeing faced ‘limited’ safety review from NASA while SpaceX got full examination
If a CEO posted a video on their way to work and breaking the speed limit would it have the same effect?
blamarvt··on The Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat aren't healthier
This article uses arguments like "Large quantities of dietary fat, with the potential to clog arteries in an otherwise average American" so casually I'm guessing most people would be shocked to find out it doesn't have much basis.
blamarvt··on The Quest for Room-Temperature Superconductors
I feel like the article is misleading insofar as to omit the material has to also be under extreme pressure to remain a superconductor.
blamarvt··on How to Secure a Linux Server
What I feel like all the responses missed is that while you're right in that a password-protected private key provides a second factor... what is typically meant by 2FA is two factors checked by the server. The server has no way to know you're using a password-protected key so it shouldn't really be regarded as a factor.
blamarvt··on Packaging Python software with pbr
Isn't that paradoxical? That code is for parsing requirements and those requirements can't be parsed until initial pre-requirements (pip, in this case) are installed.
blamarvt··on [dead]
There are absolutely lines to draw between exercising your right to free speech and yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.
blamarvt··on [dead]
> Hate speech could be as little as explaining factual reasons you don't like another race.

Part of the problem in this discussion seems to be that people have different definitions of 'hate speech'. That definition could be applicable to their country of origin or personal belief but it's pretty clear that definitions aren't even remotely compatible and it makes any sort of level-headed debate very difficult.

blamarvt··on Cardiovascular Deaths Linked to Poor Dietary Choices
How far does the control go? I've heard this argument a lot and that crucial piece is always missing. In your eyes is the US at a good freedom/control ratio or would you like to see more control over our diets (or drugs) being imposed?

*Edited to include (or drugs)

blamarvt··on Ask HN: What is your side project for 2017?
I went down the same path thinking that I could make a better selling platform (more relevant filtering) for a subset of items sold by Amazon and other retailers. I also was rejected for not having unique content. Other affiliate sites had no problem granting my applications. I'd be very interested to see how you modify your site to get accepted! Hope all goes well!
blamarvt··on Django React/Redux Base Project
Are you aware of any boilerplate repos or examples that take this approach? Seemingly every example I've seen assumes Node is the backend.

After thinking about it for a second this could be because I've been looking at universal/isomorphic projects but I'd imagine you should be able to do rendering in Node and still have a completely separate API project.

blamarvt··on Ask HN: Universal JavaScript + separate API project?
Not really what I'm looking for, but thanks for the reply!

I'm really looking for an opinionated Javascript library/framework which would allow me to write Javscript once for clients and render both on the server side and client side with the same code.

For me pre-rendering isn't just about bots, it's about not having to use Javascript at all if the client doesn't want to.

The lag associated with calling an external service would also be a non-starter as it's a pretty dynamic site. But I'd imagine it would work well with highly static sites. Thanks again.

blamarvt··on Apple Is Said to Be Working on an iPhone Even It Can’t Hack
Isn't this problem already solved in the non-tech world through a last will and testament or a bank lockbox which contains passwords you want people to have in the event of your death?

I'm not sure it's a perfect solution but might be better than counting on someone to reverse engineer or hack into your phone.

If you're serious about encryption you should always have a backup key somewhere... unless you want a single point of failure (you). Both should be an option.

blamarvt··on U.S. Coding Website GitHub Hit with Cyberattack
The DDoS tactics may have changed but the initial attack [0] was from all non-Chinese IPs who were visiting Chinese websites. That's what makes this attack so difficult to block -- requests aren't being made from Chinese IPs but rather from everwhere else.

blamarvt··on Ask HN: Why isn't the GitHub attack being covered by the news?
http://insight-labs.org/?p=1682

Sorry but how would a bored teenager somewhere have control over injecting attacks in traffic passing through the "Great Firewall of China". This really doesn't seem like a typical attack to me but you are right in that I should not be claiming this an obvious attack by a nation-state without the facts.

blamarvt··on Ask HN: Why isn't the GitHub attack being covered by the news?
I agree that monetary loss is a big motivator, however I am still curious (US citizen) as to the political implications of doing nothing as a nation when companies are quite obviously being attack by foreign governments. Normally these kind of attacks are much less obviously perpetrated by nation-states.
blamarvt··on Ask HN: Why isn't the GitHub attack being covered by the news?
If there was an attack on the distribution network of American manufacturer would it matter what they produce? The precedent set by doing nothing politically here is pretty scary to me!

(Of course, political conversations could be going on but not publicized.)

blamarvt··on Ask HN: Why isn't the GitHub attack being covered by the news?
All I'm trying to say is that this DDoS is pretty obviously being perpetrated by the PRC. Regardless of the attack vector, isn't this an important global political issue? Most attacks are carried out by fringe groups, and while I'm sure governments carry out attacks like this all the time... normally they aren't so obvious.
blamarvt··on Ask HN: What should GitHub do about the DDoS attack?
Why is this not in the mainstream news? Even if it's not the Chinese government directly it's a group with significant power inside China -- so why isn't this being considered a foreign attack on a US company?
blamarvt··on Ask HN: Who is on my ballot tomorrow? (US)
Thanks for the links. While I did ask about myself, I was also hoping to find a general information resource I could point friends and family to which was easy to use. So far I haven't seen anything but http://ballotpedia.org is promising!

Also, your second link for MD specifically does give me a sample ballot PDF customized to my legislative and congressional districts but I'd have to copy/paste all of the candidate names to do research on them.

Thanks again.

blamarvt··on Ask HN: Who is on my ballot tomorrow? (US)
Thanks for the link. Lots of good information out there, just I think there is a real need for it to be made more accessible for lazy people like me.
blamarvt··on Ask HN: Who is on my ballot tomorrow? (US)
Yup! http://www.elections.state.md.us/elections/2014/primary_cand...

They have all of the information there but I would have to know all of my districts to get a complete view... it's not as simple as I'd like and from what I can see there definitely isn't a nation-wide site/app which can tell me who is on my ballot so I can educate myself prior to an election.
