blahbl4hblahtoo··on "Class" is the worst C++ keyword
There have been a lot of these articles lately...it seems to be fashionable to dislike OO and C++ OO specifically.

Not all committee's are bad and not everything they produce are bad. The C++ steering committee is made up of dedicated and sharp people...There are, at the very least, good reasons for most of their decisions.

You may not know the whole story just from your experience.

I'm just saying...

blahbl4hblahtoo··on An Alternative Theory of Unions [2007]
It has always seemed like there was a real libertarian streak among silicon valley types, but this kind of historical revisionism sounds very "southern republican" to my ear.

The thing is that people fought and died for the, if this is to be believed, trivial concessions that management made to workers. You know, those same trivial concessions that management made with little or no animosity that stemmed from entrenched political viewpoints or historical precedents.

This article is the labor relations version of Jesus riding a dinosaur.

Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't this Paul Graham guy have something to do with this site?

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Basic Data Structures and Algorithms in the Linux Kernel
Wow. That's so cool.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Namecoin, A Replacement For SSL
You know, you're right. SSH has about the most sane crypto ui out of everything. That's a really sad state of affairs. I also agree with your point about self signed certificates...you it seems like sites should be able to identify you by that. It's probably easier to keep the certificate store on your machine safe than it is to actually follow the best practices that I've seen regarding password selection and usage.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on DOJ lied to Supreme Court to avoid judicial review of warrantless surveillance
cheers. thanks.

Isn't this due to treason being interpreted as providing an enemy with information or assistance during a declared war?
blahbl4hblahtoo··on How to design a class
I really enjoyed this...the upvoted answer was really helpful. I'm going to use it tonight when I get home and can work on a personal project.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Node.js Tools for Visual Studio
Wow, for an alpha release that's pretty impressive. Node seems to be really taking off at MS...parts of Azure are built with it...some really large parts of Azure.

It's awesome that they didn't screw with Node either to make it run on Chakra...

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Software patent reform just died in the House
I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but saying that software patents are "evil" is hyperbolic.

The slave trade is evil.

Software patents are a real problem area of our law...but they don't rise to the level of "evil".

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Introducing Instagram for Windows Phone
That's awesome...I really like windows phone. I have had several Iphone's and used one android phone at work and WP is just hands down better...of course, I don't use as many apps as a lot of other people. I mainly use the web browser which is awesome.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on What 4chan thinks of HN
That's the most accurate assessment I've seen so far...
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Why Do Companies Still Use Microsoft Windows For Displays?
8.1 allows you to boot into a single metro app... at least the desktop won't interrupt...
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Amazon WorkSpaces
Wow...that's a really good analogy.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Amazon WorkSpaces
There is sooooooo much XP still running in most large organizations it is very very frightening.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Amazon WorkSpaces
I know that some of you guys have some issues with hosting data in US datacenters...but I have to tell you...I'm so fed up with IT. I'm actually sitting on hold with a major "all hands" issue with our IT department...

I've done this for years...maybe 20 years at this point. I can tell you this..."We" (meaning everyone in IT) don't do desktop management well AT ALL. I can't remember the last time I used a corporate baseline. They take 10 minutes to SHUTDOWN. (That's private industry...government is worse.) I don't know why users put up with it and it makes me realize why everyone hates Windows. (The average baseline literally forces it to stink like a rotting fish.) Couple that with networking guys that are useless at telling you anything other than "its up"...ITS ALWAYS THE FIREWALL.

Almost everyone that I work with just doesn't get how precarious their position actually is...if people don't want to use the sh!t that you work on you just might find yourself screwed at some point.

I work in IT and I would use something like this in a HEARTBEAT if it meant getting better boot times and less "what port is open" bs.

It seems to me that most people in IT actually think that the servers are more important than the people using them.

Thanks for putting up with this little rant...

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Switzerland’s Proposal to Pay People
I think that there are assumptions made by your argument that sound reasonable on the face of it but that don't actually match reality. Not just yours but pretty much every economic argument that I've heard that takes this "forces of nature" form.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Is Modern Web Design Too Formulaic?
Does the author have a little round picture of their self? (Yes.)
blahbl4hblahtoo··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 website has been taken down
Aww man...I liked that site.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
That's not a bad idea. Take the browser engine and embed it in your app...then never load code that isn't your own. That's not a web app...thats a native client.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
That really doesn't change the equation. That's only if you can trust the client code...and it just isn't feasible with JS sent to you from a 3rd party.

pgp works because it transfers data and not code.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
Verifying the code on your system is something that can be easily done and easily verified the next time you use it. Its your system after all.

I salute what you are trying to do, but you have to understand that the Js browser method, as it stands today, is a dead end.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
That's the point. If you have to "setup the environment correctly" you should implement a native client. GPG is secure because it transfers data...not code. That's actually the webs biggest problem...you can't trust code given to you by some stranger. If you transfer data you can verify that it hasn't been modified in transit. Its really impossible to verify that code given to you performs the way that you think it will.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
Its not a personal insult. This system just doesn't provide serious protection from "dragnet surveillance". Distributing keys and allowing the client to encrypt a message to another user ala GPG is a great idea...you just can't use server delivered code to do it in the traditional web server/browser way. The JavaScript is modifiable in transit.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
I have to disagree. I'm not sure that is the "holy grail"...i think its not even possible with common browser runtimes.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Scramble.io: secure email for everyone
If you just expose your service as an API then you don't have to worry about users trusting code given to them by the site. Then use a native client app that doesn't suck to interact with the service...all of the encryption is done client side with all of the messages being encrypted end to end.

JavaScript encryption just isn't really valid in browsers...the browser runtime is to blame. Its funny that people have to all learn the same lessons over and over again...it's a worthwhile goal...keep at it, just try a different approach.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Nokita: A Plan to Raise Billions and buy out Nokia before Microsoft
It's really weird how people have started to anthropomorphize these corporations and their products...why do this? If you could raise billions you could start a new endeavor?

Nokia isn't an old friend of yours. There's nothing to "save". Raise your billions and hire some of their designers if you like the work that they do.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Namecheap now offer .io domains
Oh good. Now to setup a blog about programming web api's in GO complete with a little round picture of myself.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Microsoft Bashes Apple's iWork Software, New iPads
To be fair Apple takes cheap shots at them all the time. Both companies have a long history of taking pokes at each other.

The outrage among their fans is always entertaining, but people should remember that "Apple" and "Microsoft" aren't people that are talking mean about each other. They are companies that sell products. They are going to advocate for their products vigorously. Shocking.

The emotion that gets wrapped up in these arguments is a little creepy. It's really a sign of how marketing has been internalized by some people. (Including the people at MS and Apple.)
