blackdogie··on Adobe to Acquire Magento
When picking a platform, it's generally not about the feature set, as to why one is chosen over another. Often it's service : price, flexibility (integrations or future expansion), or just how the business operates in general. Best of luck on your reach. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Great to connect, will reach out via email. Thanks for the kind words about the website, it was just relaunched last week.
blackdogie··on Adobe to Acquire Magento
It's a smart move for Adobe I believe. I really can't see how the overlap of customer base for AEM / Magento will be, also it will be interesting to see if they start to do more b2b or b2c eCommerce. It is an interesting time in the space, strong CMS adding eCommerce, and strong eCommerce adding CMS. It's highly likely that Salesforce / Commerce Cloud will expand into the CMS space and possibly more consolidation of platforms.

There are some abstract systems like Moltin.com that offer eCommerce APIs Platforms like BigCommerce.com / VTex.com / Miva.com / Volusion.com are also pretty popular.

Then you have some end to end ones like Coredna.com* that offer B2B, B2C and CMS.

*Disclaimer : I work for the last company

blackdogie··on Wordpress infected with Trojan
This isn't anything new AFAIK. I've seen this issue before they do a great job at hiding the code, like pushing it off to the 300th column. WordPress Exploit scanner plugin is your friend here.

Plus there should be some SEO benefits too. So it should work two fold. I've seen a site of mine move from mid-30% mobile traffic this time last year, now up to over 50%. I was surprised with the amount and the change over the last 12 months.

The site's not loading for me in Germany :( Google Cache also didn't do anything, besides load the bare HTML page.
blackdogie··on Introducing Pebble Time
Whatever about the product, their timing is spot on. Not that it will really make much of a dent in the Apple Watch sales, I'm sure there are a lot of people who'll get this now instead. Major differences, battery life & price do make this a tempting product.
blackdogie··on Intercom's first book: Intercom on Product Management
at 60+ pages it's something that will take me a bit of time to go through. But on a first glance it looks good, i.e. similar quality to their blog. The ebook takes you through the whole process of thinking about your product, what it needs to do and what you should think about so that it will actually do it.

I'm sure a few people might complain about the fact that you have to invite 2 other people to get the book. But I'm also sure that people here are smart enough to get around that if they really want the book.

Did you take any special measures for protecting your blog, like caching ? Or are you running beefy enough hardware ?

https://www.vpn.ie/

A domain that earns via affiliate commissions. I write a blog post every now and again and swap in different offers from time to time. But it works very well for the amount of time I invest in it. The companies I work with offer lifetime commission on referred customers.

About once a week someone calls or emails me, and I just send them a standard email about what a VPN can do.

When I get particular good offers (Black Friday for example) I fire off an email to the newsletter which has about 200 subscribers I think.

The site takes less than an hour a month to maintain.

Looks great. I guess this would be a great time to think of maybe trying your luck with Kickstarter (that is if you are interested in continuing working with such hardware). Either way a nice write up for a cool little project !

Seeing as Uber now has distinct ties to Google, I doubt that they are an acquisition target for FB.
blackdogie··on Uber Executive Suggests Digging Up Dirt on Journalists
Despite being an impressive company, generating sales, growth fast, expanding internationally, it seems that these founders are a little immature. This isn't the first story about the lack of ethics of the company, and if I was them I would worry about this potential shift in widespread support. Today's shining light can easily be changed into the tomorrows demon. Maybe they could spend $1M on PR to improve the image.

Just checked Munich, and no black cars are displaying but Uber Pop's are. I wonder how much notice you would get about such an action.

blackdogie··on Show HN: Startuplister – A startup directory listing service
If your startup is focussing on startups then maybe this could be of use. But I can't see the general appeal.

Besides adding a list of what sites you syndicate to, maybe startuplister could also provide a list of submitted sites (with an API too).

I can see the value, if you are going to list your startup on all of these services yourself by hand. But I do wonder about the intrinsic value of being listed on them too.

blackdogie··on Show HN: Dump receipts as you get them through the year, recall them at tax time
The lack of contact details or any details (terms of service, privacy, etc.) makes me a bit wary about trying the service. While I can appreciate that you want to keep the app clean and easy to use, some basic information (maybe a tutorial video) will bring you a long way. I don't see any information on pricing either. If you are giving it away for free, that's great, but there should be information that this indeed is the case, or that it's easy to export my bills in the case that you run out of money funding an app that doesn't generate cash.

P.S. your demo account took me all of 2 tries to guess the password, so you might want to change that. I'd email you if there were any contact details on your page.

blackdogie··on SendGrid: 5 Years of Scaling Our Technology and Our People
interesting article, albeit like on any real insights. No real details on how the tech was scaled or how they grew to 250 people. I was surprised that their volume in 5 years is 270+ billion emails. That's a pretty impressive number whichever way you look at it.

blackdogie··on Show HN: Barcoded – A dynamic barcode generation web service
perhaps examples of each of them, when you load the app would be good. Rather than having people to guess you need 8/9/10 digits to see a barcode would help people here. But it looks pretty sweet !

great explanation, thank you. I too wonder about the conversion. I had a pending cash out transaction that was cancelled and wondering whether the assets would go towards it (from my reading it does).

blackdogie··on Satellite photos of possible crash site of MH370
The MH370 has the following dimensions

Just thinking out loud... but a piece that's 24m long, seems a bit small. To me it makes me think of a boat or something similar. I guess the news agencies are happy with this news today, at least they don't have to keep on repeating the fluff from the last few days.
