blablablerg··on GrapheneOS in 2027 available on high-end Motorola phones
Why not, his linkedin profile is public and easily findable. This is not doxxing.
blablablerg··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
To ascribe good faith here to Zuckerberg is quite the leap considering his history. Why are his main products basically walled gardens then?

It is a business decision to open source his models, because he has been behind the curve from the start. Do you believe if he had chatGPT, he would open source/weight it? I don't think so, he would treat it like Instagram.

The point is, AI/LLMs are seen as the next frontier. If one of the closed ones becomes dominant, then that company can use its user base to attack Zuckerberg's platforms. That google failed with google+, does not mean the next competitor will.

A telling sign is how he integrated his AI into whatsapp. It seems out of place to me to have an LLM integrated into whatsapp, but he desperately wants a part of the AI cake.

blablablerg··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
Ah yes, a reply in true hacker fashion, if people only were that binary. Just don't use, then addiction wouldn't be a thing! Problem solved. We can see it all around, the now 55 years war on drugs has been a great success!

I'm not sure if you ever had to deal with someone addicted close to you, but it is heartbreaking. They are already ashamed of themselves and suffer. The last thing you want to do is take away their dignity, because that shuts them out and puts the path to recovery even further. They are still humans you know, just with a problem. They need help, not a trashing. That they are already doing to themselves.

Yes.
blablablerg··on Prepare for That Stupid World
> Automated snack vending machine is a solved problem since nearly a century.

Yes, but as stated by the Anthropic guy, a LLM/AI running a business is not. Or would you just let it run wild in the real world?

And I agree that there is a PR angle here, for Anthropic could have tested it in a more isolated environment, but it is a unique experiment with current advancements in technology, so why wouldn't that be newsworthy? I found it insightful, fun and goofy. I think it is great journalism, because too often journalism is serious, sad and depressing.

> None of the world class journalists seemed to care. They are probably too badly paid for that.

The journalists were clearly taking the piss. They concluded experiment was a disaster. How negative does the author want them to be about a silly experiment?

This was just a little bit of fun and I quite enjoyed the video. The author is missing the point.

blablablerg··on Game design is simple
It is an interesting article but I find the slides inserted without much context to be confusing.. or is that part of the game?
blablablerg··on Always Invite Anna
I'll go against the grain here. If I invite someone a couple of times, and constantly get declined no way I'll invite that person anymore, because I make an effort to invite you. Declining (repeatedly) makes me feel like an ass for inviting you. And I want friends that respond, not friends that reject me. Wanting to be invited just to decline sounds.. egotistical to me. A relationship is a two way street, and being that shy is a you problem.

To even be more cynical, maybe Alexei wanted something more from Anna? Because I certainly haven't seen people invite someone to repeatedly get declined.

blablablerg··on GPT-5
For fun, I asked it how much better it is than GPT-4. It started a rap battle against itself :P

blablablerg··on Always On, Always Connected, Always Searching, Always Distracted
Postmodernity is said to be a culture of fragmentary sensations, eclectic nostalgia, disposable simulacra, and promiscuous superficiality, in which the traditionally valued qualities of depth, coherence, meaning, originality, and authenticity are evacuated or dissolved amid the random swirl of empty signals. -- Baudrillard
blablablerg··on Use AI code tools as collaborators, not crutches
Nice vibe writing.
blablablerg··on At Amazon, some coders say their jobs have begun to resemble warehouse work
Who claimed that?
blablablerg··on Dijkstra on Ada
And you don't think he would adjust like Linus for example?
blablablerg··on Human
Instead of an anthropocentric vision, you present here a "compucentric" vision, reminiscent of the works of Douglas Hofstadter, where the universe renders code, awareness reprograms, and everything is a recursive pattern. (This is Hacker News after all.)

The final authority in this story is then the universal computer (for lack of an operator or programmer of the computer) which executes this recursive function, creating these evolving forms of awareness and such.

The anthropocentric vision, in that we are the source of or own reality, is then for me instead much more believable, since the "compucentric" vision is after all thought up by a human without any evidence pointing toward the existence of such an universal computer.

blablablerg··on Microsoft begins turning off uBlock Origin and other extensions in Edge
Only a small percentage of people are willing to pay for internet services. It is psychology and competition between the sites who offer services for free vs requiring payment. Paying for a service is a barrier to entry, while getting it for free and selling your data instead is not perceived as such. That is why all the big sites never would've taken off if they had paywalls.
blablablerg··on Undergraduate shows that searches within hash tables can be much faster
It is, because you are wasting time reinventing the wheel. Also if something is already well researched, you might miss intricacies, traps, optimizations etc. previous researchers have stumbled upon.
blablablerg··on What about K?
"K is a general-purpose programming language that excels as a tool for data wrangling, analytics and transformation."

How does it compare to R/tidyverse?

blablablerg··on Are rotary mixers better?
You can't do (or it is much more involved) to do cuts with rotary knobs. So they serve only the DJ who does slow mixes, while with faders you can do both.
blablablerg··on Fairness and kindness are not weaknesses
(Too much) empathy can definitely be a weakness. It is situational however, in a safe and peaceful environment it is beneficial and helpful, in less fortunate environments it can make you a target.
blablablerg··on Windows XP 2024 Edition is everything I want from a new OS
Not all, kernel level anticheat with the big multiplayer games is a problem these days (areweanticheatyet.com), but other than that, most titles work.
blablablerg··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
It is a very big difference to publicly blame your now ex-CEO for basically lying ("not consistently candid") versus just a polite parting message based on personal differences or whatever. To attribute direct blame to Sam like this, something severe must have happened. You only do it like this to your ex-CEO when you are very pissed.

blablablerg··on Xfce Wayland Development Roadmap
Not so sure that VR will take off that much, or that soon. The Apple Vision Pro is still pretty heavy, working for hours with that thing, well I hope you have strong neck muscles.
blablablerg··on Swedish cities hit by four residential explosions in an hour
They realized:

- More chance of getting away with it vs (attempted) assassination, since you usually don't cause bodily injury or death (so police divert less resources to the crime) and you are well away on your scooter when the explosion happens. Lately more have been getting caught however. Still the punishment then is less than with (attempted) murder.

- More kids willing to do it, because punishment is lower, and chance to get caught is lower.

- Besides the intimidating effect, it creates pressure on the victim by the neighbors and the government, because they now suspect the victim is a criminal and want it to stop. It can even lead to eviction.

All in all in pretty good way to pester your enemies without escalating to murder.

blablablerg··on Ask HN: What GNOME Shell extensions do you use?
It is actually pretty decent. Since GNOME ~40 the desktop is pretty much out of your way and a joy to use imho.
blablablerg··on Ask HN: What GNOME Shell extensions do you use?
Blur My Shell, Espresso, Just Perfection, Pomodoro, Reorder Workspaces, Top Bar Organizer.
blablablerg··on Executive Function Theft
Almost any request can be framed as abuse in this manner. "Some stranger asked me to stand still on the street the whole day, he abused my agreeableness".

Imo it is not abuse if there isn't any threat and you simply can say no. If you keep saying yes to everything you coworkers ask from you, what do you expect is going to happen? It is your own responsibility to not be a doormat, that is abusing yourself.

blablablerg··on Ask HN: Stock Android phone free of bloatware?
That is not why Linux "failed"(1). It is because essential software for the average PC user like MS Office and the Adobe suite is not available. For games the situation has quite improved thanks to Valve.

(1) Linux didn't fail, the desktop is already a joy to use imho. It is just waiting till it reaches critical mass, then the Year of the Linux Desktop will be nigh.

blablablerg··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
It is not just about thinking that corporations/billionaires are doing something wrong, it is also about them getting away with it, governments doing nothing about it and being powerless yourself to do something about it. If this world rewards the rich cheating for example by using tax havens, why not cheat themselves out of some dollars a month by using a 'cheap haven' yourself? Seems fair to me.
blablablerg··on Deadlines as Technology
He writes about all these productivity tools and that he stopped using them. For me the same, but the one I still use and helps me is org mode. It excels at customizability and simplicity. How I use it: I write down my plan for the day, and I clock in and clock out, keep track on how much time I spend on actual work and doing useless stuff (like browsing the internet). When I saw how much time of the day you are actually doing nothing during time you have decided for your self to be productive, well that was a shock.
blablablerg··on Life After Language
Why not? This is a very dogmatic take on how to spend ones time. People enjoy different things, if you enjoy spending time behind a screen, go for it.
