bkurtz13··on I Hate the News (2006)
He uses voting as an example. Which begs the question: why vote?

If you're living within a corrupt, self-serving political system (we are), then naturally the only people who run for office will be products of that system. If a candidate who genuinely wants to change the status quo somehow manages to slip in, they will be prevented from achieving anything meaningful once inside.

No matter what, none of these people have my interests in mind. So I ask, what's the point?

Take a look at Prismatic's om-tools(1).

It adds a defcomponent macro that removes a lot of boilerplate.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he is alluding to, judging by the link.
bkurtz13··on The Rise and Fall of the Lone Game Developer
Actually, just as Warcraft allowed for modding which led to Dota, Starcraft 2 supports modding. So that spirit is still alive in some form at Blizzard.
bkurtz13··on Intel Compute Stick
How do you know how much it's going to cost? I don't see that information anywhere.
bkurtz13··on Kyoto taxi drivers reduce robberies by 50 percent by doing nothing
"... a win-win-win situation..."

I don't think the thieves would see it that way.

bkurtz13··on Why people leave companies
This article could be a lot better if it were more general and less focused on "startups"...
bkurtz13··on Generation JavaScript
Why would you minify your code during development? Isn't minified code for production?
bkurtz13··on Generation JavaScript
"There are 2 types of programming languages, those everyone complains about and those nobody uses..."
bkurtz13··on Will religion ever disappear?
That's assuming that "the soul" actually exists. I think it will be more interesting to see what happens once humanity comes to grips with the truth that free will is an illusion.
bkurtz13··on HTML5 Video and the End of Plugins
Can you really make that strong of an argument that YouTube's player is "overengineered"? I'm not always a fan of how they handle things but you have to at least consider the massive scale they are working at.
bkurtz13··on Java Doesn’t Suck
Have you looked at Dropwizard? It uses Jersey under the hood I believe but it streamlines using all of its libraries together.

I'm almost tempted to get a pair just to see how it would feel to be 6'7. MUAHAHAHA!
bkurtz13··on Word Perhect
Am I the only one here who didn't really find this amusing or charming, but tedious and pointless?

I guess that's art for you...

bkurtz13··on Our Microbiome May Be Looking Out for Itself
This reminded me of a discussion of the "Red Queen Hypothesis"[0] in the book Daemon by Daniel Suarez[1].

It's alternately interesting and disturbing... the implication that much of our social behavior is to further the aims of microscopic puppet masters.

bkurtz13··on Don't Call Yourself A Programmer, And Other Career Advice (2011)
This needs to have the year after it, as it's continuously been reposted.

That being said it's still good advice and a good read.

bkurtz13··on Why Apple’s Swift Language Will Instantly Remake Computer Programming
Is it even possible to take wired seriously anymore? After a couple of years of seeing stories like this pop up I think I finally understand what it's like for my wife (getting a PhD in genetics) to read the breathless science headlines I used to frequently show her.

Some kind of git-like diff-based snapshot system for programs?
bkurtz13··on Try to close this tab
Middle mouse clicking to open the link in a new tab and then clicking on the tab to change to it fires the event. Not that useful in my opinion.
