bks··on About.me Buys Itself Back from AOL
The business of reputation management is becoming more and more challenging for regular folk, business owners and professional services providers. Site like about.me give people the opportunity to list their official profiles and places where the comments should be considered to be the true word of the author. I can't tell you how many times I have found either twitter accounts or facebook pages that are not the "official" version for a person or company. I still like the concept of saying - these site are directly connected to .me
bks··on Ask HN: Best resources to learn SEO?

bks··on Ask HN: Can anyone recommend a reliable PSD to HTML service?
As a long time outsources I think you touched on a commonly missed technique for getting your project done on time. Get two people who duplicate the efforts of the initial request - this virtually ensures that you'll get the work done within the timeframe requested.
bks··on Ask HN: What does it take to launch a successful Kickstarter Campaign?
Some friends of mine just completed their successful Kickstarter campaign for Sunglasses with a Bottle opener - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2093465669/jackhawk-9000... and from the feedback that I got from them it was about the video and the outreach that they did during the campaign.

They created facebook groups, updated the kickstarter page and built a cultish following out of family and friends. They also had enough level in which people could show support and then share the link on facebook to expand their network.

But having something that solves a perceived problem, having it close to completion or "just needing the money for production" seems to work because people know that they will get the product.

bks··on Heroku down?
Looks like they are back. Now the fun part starts for the rest of us. Time to make sure that everything started and that the apps are running.
bks··on Ask HN: What's the best place to find freelance Copywriters?
You could try http://www.textbroker.com and bid on their level 5 professionals. Typically excellent work as long as you provide excellent directions.
bks··on Ask HN: Why Net 30? Why not pay immediately?
I dont't think that there is anything illegal about paying for services rendered at the time of delivery. Nor is there anything wrong with pre or post paying.

As mentioned below a reason to have a gap between deliver and payment is typically

1) to manage cashflow 2) to inspect good and services 3) the buyer is the middle man or the service is part of a larger project that needs to be fulfilled before the person gets paid. (This can be part of 1.) 4) To use the cash, leverage on something else and wait to pay vendors - this period is called the float. It is essentially an interest free loan that the vendor makes to the supplier.

You could use an escrow service for payments by essentially moving the money from an active cash account to a holding account or 3rd party holding account that releases to the vendor.

But in the long run, hold onto cash until you have inspected and approved and then pay immediately.

My typical terms are 10 days and I get paid in 17.

bks··on Ask HN: who started something in 2012 which is already profitable?
We are looking for CRM or Form vendors to integrate with. We will be announcing a few more integrations in the next few weeks.
bks··on Ask HN: who started something in 2012 which is already profitable?
I released a service called http://www.formactivate.com where I convert form fills and web based leads to phone calls. It decreased the time between initial lead submission to when a you can get the prospect on the phone.

We started to get a ton of activity after I integrated with Wufoo.com via the webhook API.

bks··on Long range WiFi antenna from Illy coffee can
I'll second that on http://cantenna.com - Jason and the team there have been providing an excellent source of these antenna's for almost a decade. (I can vouch for the integrity of the product because we were one of the biggest consumers of their product in the day on my site http://netstumbler.com)

I assume that the interest in this is back because of Marius Milner the Google employee who built the Netstumbler software http://www.netstumbler.com / http://stumbler.net is the suspected engineer who wrote the Google software that has been in the news about the mapping of access points by Google streets cars.

bks··on "We'll pay you $1,500 per year to drop your LinkedIn account"
Chances are that yes you are doing something wrong...if you goal is to attract recruiters. Linkedin has some secrets just like any other platform and one of them is that recruiters tend to like 2nd or 3rd level connections so that they can see who you network with.

There are also ways to add keywords to your profile that make it easier for them to search by certain competencies or experience.

The number of recruiter requests that I get has increased steadily as I have increased the size of my network. Once you hit over 500 connections it seems to be a tipping point.

There are some other settings that indicate that you are open for conversations on hiring, business opportunities etc - that make it easier for them to contact you. Good luck.

bks··on HN Post Update - From Concept to MVP, but the interface and UX is terrible.
394 days ago I posted to HackerNews that I not only had a startup idea but after a few brief conversation I had also “secured” some funding to build an MVP. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2223764

This is a followup post to update you on my progress and to ask for help - http://www.bradslavin.com/2012/03/16/my-baby-is-ugly-from-co...

bks··on Running Dropbox affiliate ads cost me my Adwords account
This seems like an AdSense vs. Adwords issue. What the forum users were doing was defrauding Adwords advertisers in an attempt to bolster your AdSense account.

Essentially committing fraud. The issue in this post is his AdWords account was banned because of x,y,z reason but not because of to many clicks. They probably saw the $100 credit beding used for affiliate direct linking and flagged the account.

Just as an aside I have 13GB on dropbox now and got the additional storage by using the technique outlined in the article. My biggest difference was that the account was seasoned and I was spending my own money, not google coupon money.

bks··on Path uploads your entire iPhone address book to its servers
So I have read the responses and it seems that there are a few schools of thought here and I just want to make sure that I understand the possible solutions.

Per user Steko is this the ultimate solution to the problem -

(0) we get your permission (is this in the ULA, the in app screen? The privacy page of the app?)

(1) we check for your contacts in our database (hashing your contacts). The method of hashing yet to be determined or what info to hash and match if anything other than the email address or maybe the phone number.

(2) we let you know if any matches are found.

(3) we throw away all your data afterwords.

My question is - do you go through steps 1,2,3 each time that you boot up the application or click the add connections button. Compare the hash, report on the matches and dump the rest? Rinse and repeat?

Is the issue more the keeping the address book for later matching, or the passing it in the clear part?

If you were going to have an opt-in or disclosure what would you want it to say?

bks··on Retainer based consulting
Freshbooks might actually let you do this - you can take a deposit from your clients. And once they pay apply a credit to their account, and then use a time tracker to bill "against" their credit on the account.

Most of my clients are prepaid but I hace certainly used it to bill against a credit amount .

bks··on Show HN: Our 5 month project Airtime for Email
Agreed on having the standard icons in the footer. I do like the idea of being able to update the marketing message so if someone opens an old email - they are current with the brand message.

I also include my photograph in every outgoing message - a little corny, but it does help at subsequent networking events.

bks··on Ask HN: Which SaaS products does your startup use on a daily basis?
Only going to mention things that other have not mentioned.

http://Elance.com - Remote contractors. Hourly or job based

http://oDesk.com - Virtual Admins

http://Freshbooks.com - Automation of invoicing. My average days to pay are about 9. A bill I am very happy to pay each month. I use chronomate as the time tracking portion.

http://adroll.com - advertising retargetting

http://join.me - free screen sharing better than go-to-meeting

http://highrisehq.com - CRM

bks··on Ask HN: How many domains do you have?
I have 137 in total. Most I have had for 5 years plus, and sometimes when I look at them I am reminded of some huge plans I had to take over xyz industry. They are all now hosted at bulkregister.com
bks··on Ask HN: Monthly billing software for SaaS site
We use stripe.com
bks··on Ask HN: is it possible to earn a living US wage at oDesk?
I have a ruby on rails outsourcer that gets paid $5000 USD per month for 60 hours of work. I referencing my earlier post - I think specializations and showing competence in your chosen language / API / platform or type of work you do is key.
bks··on Ask HN: is it possible to earn a living US wage at oDesk?
I was at the Twilio conference this year and there was a talk from Tim Lytle who only uses oDesk for his clients. He claims to have a pretty good client base and is busy from the work.

Twilio also endorses oDesk as a platform for people to find qualified programmers http://www.twilio.com/blog/2011/06/twilio-partners-with-odes..., maybe the answer is to specialize and differentiate to become more successful when competing against $10 per hour international outsourcers.

bks··on Ask HN: What accounting services do you use?
Call me stupid but I use Quickbooks Online from Intuit - why, you might ask?

Because when it comes to accounting and having these processes outsourced I make sure that it is a familiar an interface as it can be for my accountant.

The online version syncs to my banks accounts, paypal and but it does not auto sync to freshbooks.

bks··on Ask HN: Lifehacker mentioned my app & traffic boosted. How to keep momentum?
Great idea on re-marketing, it is really cost effective - downright cheap to do. If you are not sure what is is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_retargeting but basically a banner follows a user that has come to your site for 30/60/90 days and keeps your brand in their focus.

A better (cheaper) solution is http://adroll.com, I use them for my corporate site at http://www.webheat.com and they are pretty cheap and easy to setup.

The only thing you need before you sign up is a banner, any banner - even if it gets rejected you can still have the tracking pixel on your site and then target your users.

bks··on Ask HN: What SaaS are you currently paying for?
Github - Code repo

Skype - phone calls

Pivotal Tracker - Agile - Yo baby!

Raven Tools - SEO and reporting

Freshbooks - Billing

Quickbooks online - "accounting"

Balsamiq Online - Collaborative Mockups

and I think my new SaaS that I will be announcing in about 5 days will be well worth the money :-)
